Emma Everman
1908-2003
Emma Thornbury Everman, 95, widow of James Orel Everman, passed away at her residence early Tuesday morning, Nov. 4, following a short illness.
She was born Feb. 22, 1908, on Lost Creek in Carter County, Ky., a daughter of the late John E. and Belle Ratcliff Thornbury.
"Miss Emma", as she was lovingly known by most everyone, was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
She was a retired Carter County school teacher, a strong community leader and a lady of strong faith. She began her teaching career at Lost Creek and after a span of 42 years, retired in 1970, having taught her last 10 years at Grahn Elementary.
She remained interested in education as a member of Carter County Retired Teachers Association and Morehead Alumni Association (class of 1959). She is the last survivor of the 1927 class of Christian Normal Institute currently known as Kentucky Christian College.
She had lived at the home she and her husband built on Carter Caves Road for 73 years. She enjoyed farming, working with her flowers, quilting, tatting, bird watching and rocking on her front porch overlooking Tygart Valley.
She was a longtime member of Mount Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church and her love of the Lord and her church was evident in every aspect of her life.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Buddy Gilbert; six brothers, Roscoe, Lewis, Ollie, Jeff, John and Stewart Thornbury; and three sisters, Rosa Sturgill, Kathleen Kendall and Fannie Fletcher.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws, Marjorie and Bud Gilbert of Dayton, Ohio, and Cozetta and Jim Bond of Olive Hill, Ky.; one grandson, James (Paula) Bond of Knoxville, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Leigh (Bill) Segal of Princeton, N.J., and Amy (Willie) Lewis of Madison, Wis.; four great-grandchildren, Emily, Rebecca and Sammy Segal and Allie Lewis; one sister, Isa Marie Pendleton of Charleston, W.Va.; three sisters-in-law, Eloise Thornbury of Ashland, Nora Dent of Cardington, Ohio, and Ruth Webster of Beavercreek, Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, and friends; and a loving caregiver, Christy Cox, to whom the family will ever be grateful.
Mother loved flowers and they will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Carter County Retired Teachers Scholarship Fund Treasurer CCRTA, 214 Shady Lane, Grayson, Ky.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. at the Sparks Funeral Home in Grayson with Henry Mahan and Todd Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in Grayson Burial Park.
Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, and after 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
