H.M. 'Joe' Carroll
 

THOMASVILLE 

H.M. "Joe" Carroll, 80, of Thomasville, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at Thomasville Medical Center. 

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by the Rev. Carroll M. Upton. 
Entombment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Park Mausoleum in High Point. 

Mr. Carroll was born in Grahn, Ky., on April 9, 1924, to Charles Carroll and Myrtle Knipp Carroll. Mr. Carroll began his career in 1945 
in Nashville, Tenn., where he was a featured "fiddle player" with the Grand Old Opry. He performed and recorded with country music legends Red Foley, 
Eddie Arnold, Cowboy Copas, Walley Fowler and the Oak Ridge Quartet and Hank Williams. He moved to North Carolina in 1948 and graduated from the 
former Pilgrim Bible College in Kernersville. He became an ordained minister in the Wesleyan Church in 1954. 
In 1958, he earned his bachelor of arts degree from High Point College and did graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 
Mr. Carroll retired following a long and distinguished career as a teacher with High Point City Schools, where he taught the majority of his years at 
Ferndale Junior High School. He attended Hilltop Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Jeanette Carroll, in 1974. 
On March 4, 1991, he was married to Margaret Harb, who survives of the home. 

Also surviving are a daughter, Dr. Christie Carroll DaVanzo and her husband, Dr. Robert J. DaVanzo, of High Point; 
two stepdaughters, Shelia Tysinger and her husband, Dale, of Lexington and Carol Cain and her husband, Gary, of Thomasville; 
two stepsons, Randy Whitman and his wife, Lisa, of Welcome, and Jerry Whitman and his wife, Cindy, of Lexington; 
a sister, Wilma Mauk and her husband, Joe, of Olive Hill, Ky.; a brother, Eury Carroll and his wife, Myrtle, of Martinsville, Ind.; a granddaughter, Carolyn J. DeVanzo; 10 stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren. 

The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home.
