Melissa 'Missy' Byrd Perkins 1985-2006

Melissa 'Missy' Byrd Perkins, 20, of Ashland, Ky., died Friday, May 26, 2006, in Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, Ky., following an extended illness.

Missy was born June 22, 1985, in Ashland, a daughter of Finis Eddie Byrd Jr. of Ironville, who raised her, and his friend Sherrisa Danley and son C.J.; her biological father, Fred Smith and wife Kelly of Catlettsburg, Ky.; and her mother, Patricia Wells Dolin and step-father Terry of South Point, Ohio.

Missy was a member of Garner Baptist Church and was a 2004 graduate of East Carter High School where she was in ROTC.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Rodney Perkins; a step-son, Austin; a sister, Jennifer Lynn Byrd of Ironville; four brothers, Nolen, Chris and Colin Smith of Catlettsburg and Jared Wechsler of Catlettsburg; her in-laws, Bill and Janie Perkins of Carter County, Ky.; paternal gradmother, Lorene Smith of Boyd County; grandparents, Finis and Donna Byrd of West Liberty, Ky.; materal grandparents, Lyle ?Corky? Wells and wife Terri; and her best friend, Rachael Hensley.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. today at Marshall Steen Funeral Home in Ashland with the Rev. Gary Arrington officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Burial Park.
