A Century Ago This Week

The following articles were contributed by the Knott County Historical Society.

30 March 1904.
Carter County. Demented Man’s Deeds. Broke Wife’s Jaws and Then Drowned Himself in a Pool. Grayson, Ky. - Joseph Burton, 
aged 50, a farmer living three miles east of here, slipped behind his wife while she was washing the dinner dishes and 
struck her with a wagon spoke, breaking her lower and upper jaws. He then ran to a pool of water and drowned himself. His 
mind was affected by an attack of la grippe. The woman is in a critical condition.


2 April 1904.
Carter County. Dock Sizemore, from Carter county, called on Birdie Carter Sunday in Osie, Lawrence county. – Light Moon.


5 April 1904.
Carter County. The Baptists of Olive Hill will erect a church building.


6 April 1904.
Beckham County. B. W. Trimble is in Carter and Beckham counties.


13 April 1904.
Carter County. Deputy Rose, of Carter, arrested Dr. E.D. Frank, charged with setting fire to the property of J. M. 
Bent at Aden Spring. He is also indicted for cutting Bent. He is now in jail.


15 April 1904.
Carter County. Mr. Doty, of Carter county, was at J.H. Woods’ in Vessie, Lawrence county, Friday. J.M. Moreland, of 
Carter, and Dock Holbrook, of Elliott, have been appointed guards at the Frankfort penitentiary. Burt Brush, of Carter 
county was granted a parole by the State Prison commission. Brush had served the greater part of his two-year sentence.


15 April 1904.
Greenup County. George W. Boyd, of Greenup county, and Mrs. Jane Burton, of Carter county, went to Portsmouth, O.,and were 
married.


23 April 1904.
Carter County. Accidentally Killed By His Brother. Olive Hill, Ky. – 
Chester Tabor, 16, was accidentally shot and killed by his brother, Harry Tabor, who was playing with a revolver, when it 
was accidentally discharged, the bullet striking the younger boy in the abdomen. 

Killed by his brother. Chester Tabor, aged sixteen years, of Olive Hill, Kentucky, was accidentally shot and killed by his 
brother, Harry, who was playing with a revolver.
