Crosby Messer was the son of Samuel Messer and Elizabeth Smith.

Crosby was born on 20 August 1846 in Carter Co., Ky.
He first married Susan Eastman on 30 September 1869 in Lawrence Co Oh.
He later married Mary Wyant on 27 June 1875 in Vinton Co., Oh.
