This Indenture made and entered into this 6th day of April, 1838 by and between William Ward of the first part and 
Robert Carter, William G. Carter, Alfred G. Carter of the Second part witnesseth that whereas there was a survey 
and patent for 70,000 acres of land was issued to William Grayson the father of Alfred W. Grayson, Robert Grayson, 
George Grayson and Hebe Carter late. Hebe Grayson, and heirs as the said children of the patentee ( unreadable) 
beginning ( ) miles south west from the ( ) and Sassafras standing about ( ) East ( ) poles to 4 Beeches ( )
branches and B_______ Creek and Little Sandy on 12 Mile Creek to 3 White Oaks 3 Hickory 3 Dogwood ( ) north side 
of a Branch at 5 degrees. W 20 poles crossing several branches and two large creeks to 4 Chestnuts, 2 Lowewoods, 
2 Red Oaks, 2 white Oaks, 2 Dogwoods and one Chestnut. Standing on a ridge ( ) crossing Little Sandy on 12 Mile 
Creek and several other creeks and branches to the beginning. And whereas the said children and heirs sold and 
conveyed dives (?) tracts out of said 70,000 acres and the said Robert, George, and Hebe sold and conveyed diven 
(?) other tracts in which the said Alfred did not unite. And whereas the said parties of the second part are 
entitled to the share of the said Alfred Grayson and the said Hebe Carter there (sic) late mother, and the said 
party of the first part by a purchase from the Bank of the United States who had purchased from or claimed under 
David L. Ward who had purchased from the said Robert and George Grayson their interest in the remainder of the said 
70,000 acres not by them sold is entitled to the other half of the said 70,000 acres, being the shares of the said 
Robert George Grayson and whereas a division of a portion of the said seventy thousand acres was once made Called 
Dements division And whereas by written agreement John Plummer and James McGuire were appointed to divide the 
remainder of said lands between the said parties to this deed, or the vendors of the said Ward, and whereas the said 
Plummer and McGuire have made a division and returned their report to the said parties a copy of which was made by 
them attached hereto and made a part of this deed being a plat of the 70,000 acres and of the several lots assigned 
each of the parties hereto. Now this indenture further witnesseth that the said parties of the first and second part 
on issuance of the said division made by Plummer and McGuire as aforesaid have made ( ) and by this present do make 
a full perfect and absolute ( ) the said William Ward his heirs forever shall have, enjoy and hold and in 
consideration of one dollar by him paid to the parties of the second part ( )and sell unto him

( ) and the lands adjacent to the creek from John Dements to the north side ( ) of the ( ) survey containing 
100 acres, also lot number eight of said last named platt. It contains one hundred acres lays on the head 
of Cane Creek and on the north side line and to include all the lands on said branch that is valuable, also 
lot number nine, on said last named platt. It lays between farms of Lewis Williams and Mordica Williams on 
Williams Creek and runs to the north side line of the 70,000 acres and contains 300 acres. Also lot number 
eleven on said last named platt. It includes the State road from Mordica Williams and the Porter claim of 
350 acres and runs as far up the Road fork of Williams Creek as the land is valuable on both sides of said 
fork and contains 241 acres. Also Lot number thirteen on said last named platt. It includes Savages creek 
( ) fork of Williams creek from the head of the Porter claim of 350 acres, and the land on both sides of said 
creek and contains 743 acres, 2 roods (?) and 20 poles. Also lot numbered twelve laying within Dements 
division on the east side of Little Sandy river bounded north by the north side line of the 70,000 acre 
survey on the south by the side line of no. 10 in Dements connection and old division and contains 578 acres. 
Also lot numbered twenty two on the division platt made by Plummer and McGuire and is bounded on the east by 
the east line of Grayson’s on the north by no. 23 and on the west by no. 17 and 18 and contains 646 acres and 
includes hills. Also lot numbered twenty three on the last named division platt bounded east by lot no. 15 
south by lot no. 22 west by no. 16, 17 and Ellington’s Survey and contains 794 acres and includes hills. Also 
lot numbered twenty four on the last named platt in bounded on the north by Grayson’s north side line on the 
east by Grayson’s east line, on the south by lot no. 15 and on the west by lot no. 14. It is hills and 
contains 570 acres. Also lot numbered twenty six on the last named platt. It embraces hills and bounded as 
follows: on the east by the east fork, south by the old Traco Fork and lot no. 25, west by William’s creek 
and north by the north by the north side (sic) line of Grayson’s and contains 3033 acres. Lot no. 20 and 21 
and parts of lots no. 14, 16, 19, 10 and 9 and excluded from the boundary. Also lot numbered 27 of the said 
last named platt, this likewise embraces hills and is bounded on the east by part of lot no. 12 which separates 
it from Rush Creek also by the said creek and Carter’s 8,000 acres on the south by the surveys Edmunds and the 
west by lot no. 29 and part of lot no. 13 which separates it from William’s creek and on the north by said lot named

Plat, this likewise embraces hills and is bounded on the east by lot no. 28 south by lot no. 29 west 
by the west line of Dement’s connection and on the north by Grayson’s north side line and contains 
( ) acres ( )of lot no. 6 part of lot no. 8. Also lot numbered thirty one of said last named platt 
embracing the hills bounded on the north by Grayson’s north side line on the east by the west line 
of Dement’s connection on the south by lot no. 32 and west by Grayson’s west line along one half of 
which it runs and contains 2102acres. The lot heretofore sold on Everman’s creek and lots no. 1, 2, 3, 
are excluded from lot no. 31. Aslo in Dements’s connection and division the following lots and parts 
of lots to wit, number three which is bounded on the east by Dement’s east line which separates this 
lot from no. 29 on the north by lot no. 4 on the west by Moses Kibbey’s 100 acres and on the south 
by lot no. 2. This lot contains 886 ½ acres. Also in the same connection and division lot numbered 
five which bounded on the south by number 4 on the north by Lowery and C ?) old clams (claims?) and 
on the east by lot no. 8. Also on the same connection and division lot numbered seven which is 
bounded on the north by lot no. 9 on the east by lot no. 6 on the south by the syrvey of Kibbey, 
Virgin and Davis and on the west by Dement’s west line, Kibbey’s 150 acres, Everman’s 100 acres and 
D. Everman’s 100 acres and excluded. Also in the same connection and division lot no. 10 which is 
bounded on the north by lots no 11 and 12 on the east by the east line of Dement’s connection on the 
south by lot no. 9 and on the west by the west line of Dement’s division and connection and contains 
909 ½ acres. Also so much of lot no 6. in the said Dement’s connection as embraces 36 ¼ acres including 
the Pactolus Furnace and to run with the old lines of said 36 ¼ acres and also all of this said lot 
no. 6 laying west of Little Sandy river also the west end of lot no. 9 in Dement’s connection laying 
west of Little Sandy and bounded by said river and bounded on the ( ) by Dement’s west line on the 
north by lot no 10 and the south by lots no. 7 and 6. Also the lot of 300 acres called lands

lot no. 5 and the said river. Landon F. Carter’s and A. D. Mann and wife having heretofore con…. Their 
interest in all of said to Wm. G. Carter ( ). And that they the said Robert Carter , William G. Carter, 
Alfred G. Carter their heirs and forever shall have, enjoy and hold and in consideration of one dollar 
by them paid to the party of the first part he doth by these present grant bargain and sell to them this 
( ) following described lands and measures) to wit: lot numbered one in the division plat of Plummer and 
McGuire laying on the right hand fork of Everman’s Creek and includes James Bowers (?) and Mrs. Dummings 
(?) and is bounded on the east by Dement’s west line and on the north west and south by lot. No. 31 and 
contains 237 acres and 22 poles. Also lot numbered two on said named platt and lays between T. T. Hord 
survey and Charles Stewart’s on both sides of the left hand fork of Everman’s Creel and bounded on the 
east by Dement’s west line so far as it separates it from Kibbey’s 150 acres on the north and south by 
lot no. 31 and on the west by lot no. 31 and Pack’s 151 acres and contains 150 acres. Also lot numbered 
three on the last named platt and lays on both sides of the left hand fork of Everman’s Creek and bounded 
on the west by Grayson’s west line on the north and south by lot no. 31 and on the east by lot no. 31 and 
by Pack’s 151 acres and contains 300 acres. Also lot num fouron the last named platt and lays on both 
sides of Barrett’s creek and bounded by Dement’s west line and Kibbey’s 100 acres on the east on the north 
and south by lot no. 32 and on the west by lot no. 32 and Kibbey’s 40 acres and contains 187 acres. Also 
lot numbered five on the last named platt and bounded north east and west by lot no. 32 and on the south 
by Story’s 112 acres Kibbey’s 60 acres and Lewises 100 and contains 120 acres. Also lot numbered seven on 
the last named platt on both sides of Stinson’s Creek and all the land on said creek above lot no. 2 of 
Dement’s connection and original division and which lot no. 2 it is bounded on the west on the north east 
and south by lot no. 29 and contains 1000 acres. Also lot numbered ten on the last named platt and lays on 
the east side of Williams Creek and bounded north by lot no. 9 east and south by lot no. 26 and on the west 
by Williams’ Creek which separates it from Mordica William’s 100 acres and contains 75 acres. Also lot 
numbered twelve on said last named platt which lays on both sides of Rush fork of Williams and bounded on 
the north by Porter Claim of 350 acres on the east by lot. 25 on the south by lot. 25 and 27 and on the west 
by lot no. 27 contains 187 acres. Also lot numbered fourteen on said last named platt

on both sides of the east fork and bounded on the north by Grayson’s north side line on the east 
by lots no. 24 and 15 on the south by Ellington’s Survey and Small Survey ( ) it and lot no. 23 on ()
() Ellington’s Survey and lot no. 26 and contains 400 acres. Also lot numbered ( ) of said named 
platt and lays on both sides of Ellington Bear Creek and including Lockwood Forks and bounded on the 
( ) on the east by Grayson’s east line on the ( ) lot no. 24 and no. 23 and on the west by lot no. 23 
and () lot no. 19 and no. 26 and contains 200 acres. Also lot numbered Seventeen on said last named 
platt and includes on half of George Kouns ( ) purchase and is bounded on the north by lot no. 16 on 
the east ( ) no. 22and no. 23 on the south by lot no 18 and on the west on lots ( ) no. 19and 350 
acres the east fork ( ) by through from the center from north to south. Also lot number eighteen on 
said last named platt having the east fork funning through it and bounded on the north by lot no. 17 
on the east by lot no. 22 on the south by Carter’s 8,000 acres and on the west by lot no. 23 and 
contains 550 acres. Also lot numbered nineteen on said last named platt laying on both sides of the 
Farco Fork of the east fork and bounded as follows: on the north by lot no. 26 on east by lots no. 16 
and 17 on the south by lot no. 25 and on the west by lot no. 26 and contains 360 acres. Also lot 
numbered twenty on the said last named and has a branch running through it from north to south and is 
bounded on every side by lot no. 26 and contains 100 acres. The left hand fork of Eastham’s branch 
runs through it occupied by Mrs. Nummelly. It is not surveyed but is to be extended up the branch 
three times as long as wide. Also lot numbered twenty one on the last named platt. It lays on the 
right hand fork of Eastham’s branch occupied by Gipson bounded on the north by Grayson’s north side 
line and on every other side by lot no. 26 and contains 100 acres. Also lot numbered eleven laying 
with Dement’s division on the west side of Little Sandy and bounded on the north by Grayson’s north 
side line on the east by Little Sandy which separates it from No. 12 on the south by lot no. 10 in 
Dement’s connection and on the west by lot no. 31 and contains 650 acres. Also lot numbered twenty 
five in Plummer and McGuire connection and division and is bounded on the south by Carter’s 8,000 
acres on the east by lots no. 17 and no. 18 on the north by lot no.19 and no. 26 and on the west by 
William’s creek and lot no. 12 which separates it from said creek and contains 2,700 acres of hills. 


Also lot numbered twenty eight on the last named platt and is bounded on the north by Grayson’s north 
side line on the west by Williams creek () south side line on the east by Edmund’s survey of 1,000 
acres by lots ( ) and No. 28 and part of lot no. 13 on the north by a line which separates it ( ) 
no. 30 and on the west by Dement’s connection excluding lot no. 7 and contains 6,362 acres of hills. 
Also lot numbered Thirty Two of the last named platt and includes hills and bounded on the east by 
Dement’s west line of his connection and Kibbey’s 100 acres on the south by Grayson’s south side and 
on the west by Grayson’s west line and on the north lot 31 being a line ( ) and equidistant from the 
south and north side line of Grayson’s and contains 2, 237 acres. The surveys on Barrett’s creek are 
excluded. Also in Dement’s connection and division the following lots and parts of lots to wit: Number 
one laying on both sides of Little Sandy River and bounded on the south by Grayson’s south side line 
east by Dement’s east line which separates it from lot no. 29 of McGuire and Plummer’s division on the 
north by lot no 2 of Dement’s connection and on the west line of Dement’s connection which separates it 
from lots 4 and 32 of Plummer and McGuire connection and contains 2,691 acres. Also lot number four in 
Dement’s connection and lays on both sides of Little Sandy River and bounded on the north by the 
Barrett’s Creek survey lot no. 5 in Dement’s connection Kibbey’s 303 acres McGuire’s 150 acres and 
Lowrey’s 100 acres on the east by Dement’s east line which separates it from lot no. 29 on the south by 
lot no. 3 and on the west by Kibbey’s 100 and 104 acres surveys and contains 1,061 acres. Also lot 
numbered eight in Dements connection laying on the east side of Little Sandy river and is bounded on the 
north by lot no. 9 Dements connection on the east by Dements east line which separates it from lot 
no. 30 on the south by Kibbeys 303 acres James McGuires 150 acres and Lowreys 100 acres and on the west 
by Creekpawn (?) 100 acres Lowreys 195 acres and lot no.5 in Dements connection and contains 1135 acres. 
Also the east end of lot numbered 6 in Dements connection which lays on the eastside of Little River and 
bounded on the north by lot no. 9 dements connection on the east by Creekpawns 100 acres on the south by 
Lowreys 141 acres and part of lot no. 5 and on the west by Little Sandy River but so much of the 36 ¼ 
acres belonging to the Pactoles Furnace as lays on the east side of Little Sandy is excluded. Also the 
east end of lot numbered nine in Dements connection 

which lays on the east side of Little Sandy River and 
bounded on the north by lot no. 10 in Dements connection on the west by Dements east line which separates 
it from lot no. () and the said parties of the second part unto the parties of the first part his heirs. 
They do hereby release and forever quit claim unto the said several parcels hereby interested to be 
conveyed unto the said parties of the first part and the said parties of the second part their heirs 
shall have hold and enjoy to their ( ) all of the said several parcels of land hereby intended to be 
conveyed ( ) to them by the parties of the first part as their full share and proportion in the said 
tract of 70,000 acres of land and the said party of the first part unto the said parties of the second 
part their heirs ( ) hereby release and forever quit claim unto the said several parcels by this deed 
conveyed to them to have and to hold unto the said party of the first part the said several lots and parcel 
of land together with the appurtenances belonging to the same hereby release and confirm ( ) mentioned and 
intended to be released and confirmed unto the said party of the first part his heirs and to the only proper 
use and behoof (?) of him this said party of the first part his heirs ( ) forever and the said parties of 
the second part do for themselves their heirs ( ) covenant ( ) and agree to and with the said party of the 
first part his heirs that he ( ) party of the first part his heirs and shall and may from henceforth forever 
hereafter peacibly and quietly have hold occupy and possess and enjoy the said lots and parcels of land so 
allotted released and conveyed to him for the share or part as aforesaid free from molestation ( ) or 
hindrance of them the said parties of the second part. And to have and to hold unto the said parties of the 
second part the said several lots and parcels of land together with the appurtenances belonging to the same 
hereby released and confirmed or mentioned and intended to be released and confirmed unto the said party of 
the said party of the second part heir heirs be to the only proper use and behoof of them the said party of
