(6) Invaluable e-mails from Camille Ammerman ([email protected]), resourceful researcher in genealogy for West Virginia who is located in Manitoba.. She supplied much data for the West Virginia Rileys. Camille supplied a collection of articles by Tommie Sewell about the Fulls, who married into the Rileys.  Some of the Fulls are reputedly related to Tecumseh.

(7) The marriage of Matson Riley and Mary Dye, the parents of Hannah Riley Hickman,  is mentioned at http://www.uh.edu/~jbutler/gean/amosdye.html. The late Dr. John Charles Butler of the University of Houston has a goodly amount of information on the Dyes.  A lively and on-going discussion concerning the Dyes may be found at http://listserv.uh.edu/archives/thedyesociety.html. Dr. Butler, who died October 24, 2001, was born October 31, 1941 in Port Clinton, Ohio. There is an obituary for him in the November 2001 archives at the latter website.

(8) E-mails from Leonard William Riley III of Oregon (E-mail: [email protected]), tireless researcher of the Rileys and descendant of John Newton Riley. He is often on duty in the Peace Corps.  He has assembled an impressive amount of documentation on the Rileys.

(9) E-mails from Emma Moore, researcher of the Ross County (Ohio) Rileys. Her e-mail addresses are  [email protected] and [email protected]..

(10) E-mails from Geri Whitlatch ([email protected]) concerning the Whitlatches.  Becki Whitlatch has an FTM site with the descendants of Barnet Whitlatch.  Lewis M. Whitlatch is mentioned at http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/w/h/i/Becki-Whitlatch/GENE1-0004.html .  Becki gives his middle name as Madison, and Geri gives his middle name as Morgan.

 (11) E-mails from Barbara Keist-McClenny ([email protected]), researcher of the Modesitts and allied familes.  ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/wood/vitals/births/wdbirthm.txt gives  the birth of Margaret Modesitt..

(12) E-mails from Brenda Riley (obsolete e-mail [email protected]) about the Rileys who married into the Cozads in Ross County, Ohio.  Her husband derives from Alva Lewis Riley.

(13) E-mails from Christine Adams ([email protected]), descendant of William W. Fuller, descendant of John Dye Riley.

(14) E-mails from Pamela Lee Stebbins Hass ([email protected]), descendant of Amos and Susan Riley.

(15) E-mails from Lana Bachus Rich ([email protected]) about the Staats families of West Virginia, who married into the Rileys.

(16) Material about the John Collins Terry – Margaret Elizabeth Riley family was supplied by Winnie Rathbun ([email protected]).  Margaret was daughter of George Shively Riley and she cared for Sidney Clark Terry (Mr. Terry’s first wife) in her declining years.  After Sidney’s death, Margaret married John Collins Terry.  John Collins Terry was a son of Paul Terry Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Collins.  After Paul Terry Jr. was judged insane in or before 1849, Mary Terry married John Kight in Jackson OH.  They moved to Wapella, Iowa.  (The second husband of my grandmother (Emma McLaughlin) was another John Kight, son of Bethiah Terry and Samuel Kight who was probably a nephew of the earlier John Kight.)  John Collins Terry lost a leg in the Civil War at Gettysburg and was sent a replacement leg annually.  He and Sidney are buried together at Springlawn Cemetery at Williamsport, Ohio, but Margaret is buried in the same cemetery separately.  My main Kight contact was the late Letha Kight Goss Litzinger who died 14 June 2005  (Her e-mail address was [email protected]). Some Terry information was supplied by Bonnie Dozer ([email protected]), whose mother was Myrtle Leona Terry Martin.  A few Terrys also married Hickmans.

(17) Material about the George Zebedee Riley family was supplied by Harriet Eileen Riley Riser, daughter of Chester Nile Riley.  She has no home e-mail address. She lives in Pickaway County, OH.  She worked for Highlights for Children magazine, but since that e-mail address is now obsolete, she has obviously retired.

(18) Material about the Emma Riley – Victor Augustus Willis family was supplied in e-mails from a Bruce Overly.  Some data was supplied in a letter from Bobby McMann of Limerick Road, Jackson Township, Jackson Cty, OH. This information was confirmed by obituaries from the Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch. Gus Willis and Jacob Stoll operated a hardware store at Beaver, OH.  Phyllis Swigert ([email protected]) supplied me a photo of them (from Bruce Overly) in their store. Online at http://www.scioto.org/Pike/catalogs/obitscatalog.html and the corresponding Jackson county web address (see source 19), obituaries for various Willis family members may be found.   The obituary of Pearl Hunter Wiget Willis (Gus Willis' second wife) was found in the Chillicothe Gazette, November 4, 1976.  Other information was supplied me by Gayle Henthorn ([email protected] )

(19) Considerable material on the Abel Brohard line was supplied by Maria Castellanos Collins ([email protected]), who was born in a town in Matanzas Province in Cuba, but lives in Florida with her husband.  Online at http://www.scioto.org/Jackson/catalogs/obitscatalog.html, some obituaries for the Brohards and related families can be found.  The Brohards are derived from Revolutionary War soldier John Brohard (4 Mar 1762, Germany-4 May 1834, (West) Virginia) who fought under General “Mad Anthony” Wayne.  Material on these Ohio Brohards may be found at the Brouhard genforum: http://www.genforum.com/brouhard/ .

In the 1850 census, our Brohards are in Harrison County, (West) Virginia with John Brohard’s widow Mary.  In 1860, the G.W. Brohard family is in Wood County, (West) Virginia nextdoor to Andrew J. Whitlatch, older brother of Lewis Whitlatch. (With Andrew Whitlatch are James Barr of Maryland and wife Marietta and daughter Susan. A Marietta Barr was daughter of William Reily and Elizabeth Griffin, whose family moved to Ross County, Ohio.  William may be a first cousin of Matson Riley and a son of the mysterious John Riley, Matson’s uncle. There is also a Silas Riley, who may be William’s brother.)  In 1870, the Brohards are in Jackson Township, Jackson County, Ohio. The Brohards were teachers and community leaders.  George’s grandson Charlie (son of John Brohard and Priscilla Jane Swaney), was of some importance in the township, and won awards in farming in the county.  Charlie’s son Ralph (1 July 1922-26 Aug 2004) fought in the Pacific in WW2 as a Seabee and was at Iwo Jima.  Charles Corlas Brohard and wife Margaret Angeline Chamberlin are buried in Hickman Cemetery.  Margaret’s parents (John and Viola Jane Hartley Chamberlin) are buried at Caldwell Cemetery north of Richmond Dale, Ohio.

(20) "Before the Bowman Boys, being the known American ancestry of Alan, John and Ruel Bowman" by Jane Belknap Bowman, Anundsen Publishing Company, Decorah, Iowa, 1976. It has detailed data on the Brohards and Bowmans and allied families.

(21) John B. Roose ([email protected]) and Leonard W. Riley III ([email protected]) supplied information about the Ada Pocahantas Riley Dawkins family and related lines.

(29) Obituaries primarily from Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch and Jackson Ohio newspapers.

(30) Cemetery inscriptions from Allen Chapel Cemetery, Beaver Twp, Pike County, OH.  Some of my Wicklines are buried there as are Amanda Caroline Quickle Badders and her daughter, May Oma Badders.   May Badders married a Jacob R. Stoll who was a minister of the Church of Christ in Christian Union in Jackson Township, Pike County, Ohio, where he is buried. Jay Badders ([email protected])  of Lancaster OH reports that his great-great-grandfather Elijah James Badders is buried in Gallia County at Ewington Cemetery with his second wife Mary Lousetta Sprouse Shenefield Badders.

(31) Halterman information may be found at the Halterman Hollow link off www.scioto.org.  Online, http://www.scioto.org/Halterman/MIA/missinglinks02.html has the William Halterman – Mary Hannah Riley marriage;  the contributor was Ron Garrison ([email protected]).  Evidence of the second marriage was removed at the behest of Arthur Halterman from Mary Hannah’s tombstone in Hickman Cemetery.   The second marriage to William Wade White and the names of his parents are found at  http://www.scioto.org/Halterman/marriages/OH-Jackson.html. The Springfield Daily-News carried obituaries for Arthur and Opal Halterman; the Columbus Dispatch had an obituary for their son, Robert.

(32) Sarah Caroline Riley’s marriage to Harry Barrett was found in one of the Ross County, Ohio Families volumes published by the Ross County Genealogy Society.  Dolores Riley (Source 44) wrote that Harry F. Barrett was descended from our Rileys: . “ The lady who made up the history is a decendent of Robert Riley, John Riley's brother also.

She stems from Rebecca Riley and George Shiveley

                        Joshua Shiveley and Eleanor Fernandis

                        Frances Shively and William Henness

Nancy J. Henness and Benjamin Barrett

Harry F. Barrett and Sarah C. Riley

Iva Irene Barrett and Roy Lewis Wilt

She is Evelyn Wilt Carlson married to William Harlow Carlson.

She is 2nd of 3 children:

Geraldine Setty

Evelyn

Clyde Kenneth Wilt”

Rebecca Riley was sister to our Matson Riley.

(33) Information about the family of Sarah Alice Riley and Perry Turvey came from Gene Cost, whose e-mail address is [email protected].  The Turveys and Leasures were neighbors of my Hickmans in the late 1800s and early 1900s.  See Source 36.  The death dates for Sarah and Perry Turvey were derived from death certificates at the Ohio Historical Society.

 (34) There is a transcript of an article from the Jackson County (WV) Herald from August 1915 concerning the Riley Reunion and Picnic of August 6, 1915.  In it Col. John Harper Riley gives some information about his Riley and Click/Cleek ancestors.  Robert Riley and brother John Riley are mentioned as being the first of the family to come to America. This transcript originated from an Evelyn Carlson of Lakewood CO.

35) We have an e-mail from Deb Kunkle (e-mail [email protected]) concerning Della Love, wife of James Brainard Riley. (My father called him Brain Riley.)   Sophia Leach, daughter of George Leach and Nancy McKinniss, married Thomas Sinclair.  John Wesley Sinclair (possibly a brother) married Sarah Ann (“Sallie”) Frazee, daughter of William Frazee and Mary Leach, daughter of George Leach and Nancy Ann Bigbee.    John and Sallie had three children, but another child named Ardilla McKinniss was in the household.  Sallie died at the end of the Civil War.  Ardilla was adopted by Charles Love and Aurora Darling and came to be known as Della Love. Sallie’s will calls her “my daughter”.  At http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/k/u/n/Deborah-K-Kunkle/index.html, Deb has an FTM page outlining her ancestry.  Nancy Shelton (e-mail, [email protected]) provided information about Hathon Riley and the children of Brain and Sarepta Riley.  Hathon Riley, who lived in Ironton, was their guardian sometime after Sarepta died. Brain lived in Wellston, Ohio.

36) Charles Weese ([email protected]) has posted online a  plat map for 1875 for Jackson Township, Jackson County, Ohio at  https://sites.rootsweb.com/~ohjackso/images/1875jacksontwp-detailed-w.gif.  This western map includes the location of the farms owned by the "Heirs of Z. Hickman" and "Geo. S. Riley".  The former is near the notch in the northwest corner of the map (western Jackson Township) and the latter is at the bottom of the map near present day Limerick, Ohio. Other names mentioned herein (e.g., Abel Smith Brohard, James Modesitt, John Wood) may be found on the map. Hickman Cemetery is adjacent to the Hickman farm at the southeastern edge of the property then owned by Pleasant Springer.

(37) In Loudoun County, Virginia is a village named Pleasant Valley, now at the edge of Dulles International Airport.  There has been some confusion as to whether Matson Riley was born in Loudoun County or Prince William County. His tombstone says he was born in Prince William County, which is where I presume the doctor who delivered him lived, but the Robert Riley family lived in Loudoun County. Wherever the Rileys went, the name Pleasant Valley seems to have gone with them.  There was a Pleasant Valley and a Church by that name in Wood County, West Virginia, east of Parkersburg on route 50.  There was a church at Limerick, Ohio near George Riley named Pleasant Valley Church, but that no longer exists.  The only church now at Limerick is a small RLDS church.  There is a Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Jackson Township, Jackson County, Ohio which exists near the original church which burned about 1957.  The original site (at the edge of the Abel Brohard property) is underneath current Route 35, which was expanded 1959-1960, and the rebuilt church was moved across the road to the Harry Mullins property (the John Burt property on the plat map in Source 36)).  The Brohards were devout Baptists and helped organize the West Vrginia church in 1862.  In 1866 they helped organize the Jackson Township church at the old Springer schoolhouse.  In 1870 Abel Brohard built a church with lumber from his own timber on land purchased from “Joe French” (but see below).  “Because the families were somewhat homesick for Virginia, they named the church “Pleasant Valley” (pp. 49-50 of Before the Bowman Boys, source 20).  The Brohards were also from Loudoun County.  Mrs. Hannah Hickman and family were among the earliest members.

Abel Brohard was instrumental in building the original Baptist church at the edge of his property, and the Hickmans and their Riley relatives and spouses were among the first members, albeit later they seem to have become disenchanted and stopped going to that particular church.  (According to the Bowman book,  see source 20, the church property was bought from Joseph Finch, but this is not likely.  The owner is more likely to be Joseph Hartley, Joseph Finch’s grandfather.  One of Joseph Hartley’s daughters, Permelia Hartley (12 May 1850-3 Jan 1926 (DC#3618)), married John T. Finch (29 Aug 1850-13 Mar 1938), and they were the parents of grocer Alfred Ludlow Finch (1878-1945, nickname Lud, wife Harriet Parks 1884-1965, nicknamed Hattie) and Joseph Finch (1873-1953, wife Susie Cramblitt 1877-1967). Joe and Susie Finch owned the Abel Brohard property in my youth.  Lud’s son, John Finch (1919-1997), was superintendent of schools, and daughter Annie worked at the Jackson Public Library.  Permelia Hartley’s sister Eliza Jane (Apr 1845-6 June 1925, DC# 35558) married Harrison A. Leasure (18 Feb 1845-4 Apr 1926), son of  Adeline Leasure Turvey 1824-1881 and Matthew Nutter (DC#25146 for 1926).)  Joe and Susie Finch were the parents of Franklin Finch 1910-1991 who married Evelyn Hickman 1910-2000.  Melva Lee Finch, daughter of Franklin and Evelyn, was a Jackson County Apple Festival Queen in September 1953.  Franklin, Evelyn, Melva Lee and Donnie Finch then lived across the run from the old Pleasant Valley Church.)    There is also a Pleasant Valley off routes 35 and 104 northwest of Chillicothe in Ross County, Ohio, which implies that some Rileys moved there. www.mapquest.com may be used to find some of these places.

(38) The legend is that John Peyboldt was from Germany (Prussia).  His parents died on the boat to America and was adopted by the Barnetts and assumed the Barnett name, marrying General Barnett’s daughter.  Whether this legend is true has been questioned.  See online the Barnett genforum and  http://www.wvculture.org/history/agrext/leachtwn.html.

(39) Some data on the descendants of Orpheus and Callie Wood Stockman was provided by Emma More via e-mails sent her by Meagan  Davis, wife of Terry Davis formerly (?) of the University of Phoenix (obsolete e-mail tyler@zoomnet.net) and daughter of Kathrine White.  The names of his progeny came from the 1910 census for Jefferson Twp, Ross County, Ohio, with dates derived from the www.ancestry.com  SSDI and Linda Stratton's transcription of Caldwell Cemetery (http://www.scioto.org/Ross/cemeteries/Jefferson/caldwellcem.html). Orph was a mail carrier out of Richmond Dale.  Later mail was brought out of Chillicothe, to this day.  Other mail into the area comes from Jackson and Ray.

Some Allen data came from the obituary of Marshall H. French (Chillicothe Gazette, June 8, 1997). Some other Stockman material was added using obituaries from the Chillicothe Gazette.

(40) Some of the children of Amos Dye Riley moved into Jackson County, West Virginia.  Among the  surnames of the "Jackson County, WV Pioneers are Hickman, Full, Staats and Riley.  Online see http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bbriggs/d269.htm#P19155.  Some other Rileys moved to Washington County, Ohio.

(41) http://www.webroots.org/library/usahist/pojc0003.html has a writeup of some of the early migrants to Jackson County WV.  This includes the Cleeks, Riley, Harpolds, Castos, etc.  This is an excerpt from "Pioneers of Jackson County, West Virginia; History of Mill Creek and Sandy Valley and Its Early Settlement" by John A. House (1906). The Staats family is in "Part One" and a table of contents is on the base page http://www.webroots.org/library/usahist/pojc0000.html.: Jacob Starcher was the founder of Ripley, WV, and John and Robert Riley (sons of Matson Riley) were the surveyors.  The contributor is a Betty Briggs (see web address in previous note).

George Barnett who married Margaret Riley is called George Bennett, and House said they moved to Ohio.  Ada Pocahantas Riley is called Emma P. Riley.  The following excerpt is from Part 3.

"The next owner of the Cleek farm was Hon. R. R. Riley.

Matson Riley came across the Virginian mountains. He and his wife were both of Irish descent.

Robert and John Riley came to Jackson County in 1832, and engaged in teaching school.

John Riley first laid off the town of Ripley and plotted the town. He did other surveyor's work, as also did Robert later, he being one of the four men who surveyed and marked the boundaries of Roane County a its organization in 1856.

Buckskin breeches, linsey hunting shirt and cap of coon or fox skin was a common garb, when the Riley first came to Ripley.

Robert taught about a year, when he was appointed constable, a position he held for several years. He was a Whig while that party continued in existence, voting for Bell and Everett in 1860, against the ordinance of secession, and with the Republican party afterward. He was one time Clerk of the Circuit Court, and filled other positions of trust.

He went to housekeeping in a little cabin near the large rock behind the residence occupied in 1899 by Mr. Alfred Waters, at the time of his marriage.

In 1857, he bought the farm on the hill above Mill Creek, with which the name Riley is associated. A more detailed outline of the Riley family follows.

Matson Riley came across the Virginia Mountains (Loudoun County) to the Little Kanawha Valley, in what is now Wood County. His father and mother were both of Irish descent. One member of the family expresses it thus - The "Rileys came from North Ireland, where Rileys were so thick you couldn't throw up a potato without it hitting a Riley when it fell". He is presumed to be a descendant of either John or Robert Riley, two brothers who came to America, and probably located first in Virginia.

Matson Riley was a farmer, a blacksmith, and a member of the Baptist Church. He died in Jackson County, Ohio, at the age of ninety three years. He married Mary Dye, and they raised a large family.".

 42) Data about the offspring of John Winfred Nixon came from obits in the Columbus Dispatch and from Bettie Shonk (work e-mail [email protected]).

43) A considerable number of these contacts was given me by Gordon Magill of Estero, Florida who was researching my Leaches and Magills.  He once had much of this online, but has discontinued posting his data on the Web.

44) Multiple updates on the David Brainerd Riley line was supplied by Dolores Connie Riley ([email protected]) to Emma Moore May 2008.

Notes:

(1) Before the Civil War, West Virginia was part of Virginia. West Virginia was admitted to the union by Congress June 20, 1863. Thus such counties as Wood, Wirt, Jackson, Roane and Harrison once were in Virginia and later in West Virginia. I have been inconsistent in differentiating between the divided states.

2) Data about persons currently alive and their families have been limited for the sake of privacy. In most cases it can reasonably be presumed the person is dead, but the death date was unavailable. This composition is an abridgement of a larger file.

3) There may be other researchers who have supplied me with information, but whom I have inadvertently and regrettably omitted.

 4) We generally have no control over the accuracy of e-mail addresses given herein.  People are free to change e-mail addresses or Internet Service Providers at will.  The websites cited for www.scioto.org went obsolete April 2006. There are archived backups at least temporarily: www.scioto.org/Jackson was archived to http://web.archive.org/web/20050307090139/www.scioto.org/Jackson/catalogs/catalog.html.

Other of  his sites seem to have a similar archive format.

Even Gordon Magill who has had his material posted on America Online migrated his material (November 2002) to his own domain name, which however was discontinued.  He also had a Family Tree Maker version which also has been discontinued.

5) Children listed may not be in the exact order in which they were born,  Children who were born and died between censuses may not be listed.  Children not listed in the obituary of an individual may be omitted.

If anyone has any further information about the people included here, we would appreciate hearing from you. We have tried to be as accurate as possible, but, as King Solomon wrote in Proverbs 10:19, "In the multitude of words, there lacks not sin (or error)."

                           Supplement: Matson Riley

                       Compiler: Leonard William Riley III

III    6.   vi.             Matson Riley. Rev. Leonard W. Riley, Sr. wrote in his

notes, which were used to start this outline, that "I do

know for a fact my Grandfather, Matson Riley, son of

Robert Riley was born 15 SEP 1779 in Prince William

Co. VA. This same data appears on Matson’s tombstone in the

Hickman Cemetery. A telephonic check with the Genealogy section of the Prince William Public Library in Manassas,

Virginia, phone number (703) 792-4500 revealed that there

were no Rileys of any spelling listed as land owners or

tax payers around the time of 1775-1787 and that the

library does not possess any early marriage records.  Bettye

Heinrich did find that Matson Riley seems to have first

appeared on the personal tax record in the Prince William Co, VA in 1803. Both Matson and Joshua appear in the personal tax records in Prince William in 1804. Matson was still there in 1805 but not listed in 1806 through 1810.

Matson lived in Culpeper County and/or Leesburg and

Loudoun Counties, Virginia, perhaps in both, before

moving on to Wood Co., which is now in West Virginia, in

the early part of the nineteenth century.

According to a letter written by Col John Harper Riley, Matson was born in Loudoun County, Virginia near Harpers Ferry, Leesburg or near there.

Matson M/1 Mary Dye, dau of Amos Dye Jr. in 1801.

Amos’s wife may have been Mary Sophia Chamberlain. They were

married 2 FEB 1778. This is based on findings of John Butler. http://www.uh.edu/~jbutler/gean/amosdye.html Amos was of German descent. They had ten children.

According to family folklore, Matson Riley married

Mary Dye, daughter of Amos Dye who was a son of Amos Dye.

Sally Wyatt also claims that Mary Dye was the second cousin of Rachel Dye who married Joseph Riley whom we initially listed as a brother of Matson. Later, DNA test results revealed that Joseph was not a blood relation of Matson, but probably only related through marriage. Col. Harper also wrote that Mary Dye was of German blood and that she had five brothers and one sister, John, Ezekiel, Thomas, Rev. Henry, a Baptist minister, David and Hannah. Her sister Hannah was the mother of Judge Okey, Col Dan D and Dave D and Rev. Thomas Johnson. John B. Dye was in Franklin Co., PA in 1800 and John B. and Thomas Dye were found In Wood Co. VA/WVA on the 1810 census.

Thus far we have not found an Amos Dye, son of Amos,

but according to information received by Ollie Wagy,

possibly from the K.A.R.D. files, compiled by John and

Judy Dye, who lived at East 2018 Marietta, Spokane, WA,

99207, and later moved to Kent Valley, south of

Seattle, possible to Maple Valley, there is an Amos Dye

who married 2 FEB 1778 Mary Chamberlain.  It is quite

possible that this couple begat a daughter Mary Dye who

could have married Matson in 1801.  The genealogy of this

Amos Dye is as follows:

Laurens Duyts, b. 1610 in the area of Dithmarschen

in Holstein, Denmark, died 14 JAN 1668 in Bergen, N.J.

M/1 Ytie Jansen and M/2 Gritje Jansen, sister of Ytie on

1 JAN 1666.  Submitter states that Laurens came to

America on "Fire of Troy".  Ernest Thode, Historian,

Washington Co. OH Public Library, stated that the ship

was named "De Brant van Troja, The Burning of Troy".  His

passage was paid by Jonas Bronck in exchange for

clearing land in what is now the Bronx of N.Y.C.

The third child of Laurens and Ytie was Hans

Laurenzen Duyts, bpt 28 SEP 1644 in New Amsterdam, New                                                                                            York.  Hans M/1 Marritie Satyrs and M/2 Sarah Vincent,

daughter of John and Susannah Blaise Vincent.  Hans and

Sarah begat John Lawrence Duyts who was born 1687 on

Staten Island, NY.  John Lawrence Duyts\Dye died in 1750

in Middlesex Co., NY.  He married Anne Brown ca. 1710

possibly in Staten Island.  They begat John Dye who was

born 1711 in Staten Island plus seven other children,

including Vincent Dye who was born 1722 and died 4 AUG

1796 in Prince William Co., VA.  Vincent married Sarah

Artepe 1 SEP 1746.  John Dye, who was born in 1711 in

Staten Island, died about 1776 in Cransbury, Middlesex

Co., NJ. He married Mary Applegate.  Their fourth child

was Amos Dye who married Mary Chamberlain 2 FEB 1778.

Matson's name appeared on the Virginia census in

Wood County on page 807 for the year 1810, page 191 for

the year 1820, page 396 for the year 1830 and page 584

for the year 1850. On the 27 JUL 1860 census Matson and Jane, his second wife, were shown residing with his stepson D.F.C. Farrow in Wood County, VA. Matson was 84, born in VA.

According to the "History of Wood Co., West Virginia"

by Donald F. Black, grants of land in Wood County were

made to officers and soldiers of the French and Indian

War in compliance with the proclamations of Governor

Robert Dinwiddie of Virginia, made in l754 and the King

of Great Britain, made in l763. While other grants were

made in Wood County, only three, Tracts one, two and

four, were made by the King of Great Britain. These

entries were made in Botetourt County because the line

between Augusta and Botetourt Counties had not been

surveyed and was believed by some to strike the Ohio

river at the mouth of the Little Kanawha.

Although these actions, which were designed to aid in

recruitment and payment of soldiers, were initiated in

l754/l763, the tract did not appear on land assessor

records in l80l. The transactions did start to appear in

l803, l806 and l807. Though it has not yet been proven

that our Matson Riley was in fact given a land grant, the

name "Matson Rielley" does appear among those who

petitioned to be made parties defendant claiming title to

some of the lands. One should not be alarmed by the

spelling as Rielley. Matson's name does appear on line

675, page 278 (139) in District 65 of Wood County, VA in

the 5 AUG 1850 census. His name there was spelled

"Reilly" as was his wife Jane's. On the next line was the

family of Matson's son, Amos. In this entry, which

appears on page 676, the names of Amos and his wife Susan

appear as "Reilly". Their first four children appears as

"Reily" while their remaining three children appear as

"Riely". It is obvious that the census takers were not

noted for their spelling skills. On the census Matson's

age was given as 76. His vocation was listed as Farmer

and the value of his property was $170. Jane was 52, born

                                             in Pennsylvania.

It is interesting to note that Matson did own a

small farm on the Little Kanawha River. In 1812, Matson

did pay John Gillespie and Esther, his wife, of the

County of Wood, State of Virginia, $120.00 for a parcel

of land in the county of Wood on the West side of the

Little Kanawha River containing thirty acres.  This was a

part of a tract of land which was granted by the

commonwealth of Virginia to Paul Armstrong and conveyed

by said Paul Armstrong unto James Gillespie and conveyed

by James Gillespie unto Henry and John Gillespie. The

deed was recorded in the Wood County Court April Term

1813.  Matson farmed this land and was also a blacksmith

and in accord with the custom of those days, 'kept a

barrel of whiskey in the corner of the shop'.

According to a family letter signed, 'Your Uncle

John', (written by Col. John Harper Riley), Matson was

drafted to fight the English in the War of 1812. He hired

a substitute who rode from Parkersburg to Clarksburg,

where without smelling powder he was discharged and took

a place on the pension rolls.  According to the letter

he hired a substitute because Robert 2nd was about to be

born.  Robert R. Riley was in fact born 21 MAR 1812 in

                                             Wood Co., WVA.

The fourth child of Matson Riley and Mary Dye was Robert R. Riley, b. 1812. Robert married Elizabeth O. Cleek and begat Ada Pocahontas Riley as their 14th child, born 1861 in Jackson Co., WVA. Ada married Daniel Berkley Dawkins 15 OCT 1899 in Jackson Co. WVA. Daniel’s great grandfather was John Dawkins who was apparently rather well to do for the times and lent many people money. When John died in 1840 many notes were found from 1793 to one month before he died. One such undated note was for $125 due from Matson Riley. Thus it is apparent that the connections between the Riley and Dawkins families started long before Ada was even born. John B. (Jack) Roose, great grandson of Ada, found this information in “An Inventory and Appraisement Bill of the Estate of John Dawkins deceased taken by the undersigned this 16th day of May 1840”.

After Mary died, Matson M/2 Widow Jane McFadden Farrow of Parkersburg, WVA 30 APR 1840.  Jane was born 9 JUN 1794 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and died 7 JUL 1870 in Wood County, WVA. She is buried with her first husband, John Farrow, in the Farrow Cemetery in Murphytown, Wood County, WVA.

In 1842, at the age of sixty-three, Matson was converted and was baptized by his son, Rev. J.D. Riley, "in icy water in mid-Winter.”

According to the 1860 census, Matson and Jane were living with Matson’s

                                             stepson, D.F.C. Farrow.

On 16 DEC 1864 Matson and Jane sold 107 1/2 acres of land in Wood Co., WVA to Sarah Lowther Riley, widow of Joshua Riley, son of Matson and Mary Dye.

Sally Wyatt [email protected], whose ggggrandfather may have been the brother of Mary Dye, wife of Matson, lived within a mile of the Riley farm in the year 2001. She reports that their 98-acre farm was on the Little Kanawha River and the Parkersburg – Staunton Turnpike now cuts through the property. There was a creek on the farm and at the mouth of Walkers Creek and the Little Kanawha River, on their property, flatboats would dock to trade. In 1854 Matson sold a right of way to the North Western Virginia Railroad.

Matson died 18 SEP 1868 in the ninety-third year of his life in Jackson County, Ohio and is buried in the Hickman cemetery in Limerick, Ohio.  It is possible that Matson was living with his son George S. Riley at the time of his death as they are both buried in the Hickman Cemetery, which is in the country, about 5 miles from Limerick as well as 5 miles from RichmonDale.

The names of the three persons listed above in Generation III, Rebecca, Joshua and Matson have come down through family history, probably starting back with the works of Col John Harper Riley.

Supplement: Joshua Wood(s)  and Allied Families

There was also in Jackson County a Joshua Wood(s), who is probably not closely related to the John Spicer Wood who married Mary Ann Elizabeth Riley, widow of Benjamin Franklin Wilson and daughter of Joshua Riley, son of Matson Riley. There are at least two links between the two men via marriages of relatives.  This Joshua Wood(s) was the father of Peter Woods, who married Cora Larrabee, daughter of Delilah Beatty, whose daughter, Delilah Jane Larrabee, married Robert Matson Hickman, son of Hannah Riley Hickman, daughter of Matson Riley. According to Jackson County Deaths, Joshua Wood  died of Bright's disease on 27 Jan 1887 at age 66 years, 1 month, 3 days in Jackson County, Ohio.  He was born in Meigs County, Ohio.

In the 1850 census for Bloomfield Township, Jackson County, Ohio (household 146) says Joshua Wood was a blacksmith age 25, with wife Margaret, aged 24.  Reportedly Joshua first married a Margaret Rhoads, and his second wife was Emmarillis Kight  (1830-?).  In the 1860 census for Liberty Township, Jackson County, household 37, Joshua Woods is 34 and "Emarilis" is 30.  Our John Spicer Wood was born in Pennsylvania in 1831 according to his brief biography found online at www.scioto.org for Jackson County.  On the other hand, .  Joshua Wood's father was born in Pennsylvania per the 1880 census.

Emmarillis Kight was daughter of John Kight and Catherine Murray according to Sharon Coey (e-mail [email protected]), who has a copy of the license for Emmarillis' second marriage to John R. Ray.   John Kight was probably brother of Samuel Kight (1826-31 Jan 1893) who married Bathiah Terry (c. 1836-16 Jan 1908)    Samuel was father of John W. Kight who married my grandmother Emma McLaughlin Wickline.  Bathiah Terry Kight was daughter of Paul Terry, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Collins.  Paul Terry Jr. was declared insane about 1849 and, after a divorce, that Mary Collins Terry married John Kight, father of Samuel Kight and James Wesley Kight. This John Kight's first wife was Rhoda Palmer.   John and Mary Terry Kight moved to Iowa in the 1850s where John died.  See also Source 16.

David Edward Terry, son of Paul and Mary Terry, was father of Franklin Terry, who married Violet Hickman, and Margaret Terry, wife of Jack Hickman.  One of David's brothers was John Collins Terry, who married Margaret Riley, daughter of George Riley, son of Matson Riley.  David Edward Terry's wife was Margaret Jane Boring, daughter of Ephraim Washington Boring and Sarah Elizabeth Fitzpatrick.  Other Fitzpatricks were Hickman neighbors.

Ephraim Boring's second wife was Margaret Willis Leak, daughter of Joseph Willis and Sarah Moore.  Margaret was sister to William Willis who married Charity Malissa Hickman.  Margaret Willis' first husband, Elisha Leak, died at the battle of Gettysburg.  Another of Margaret's brothers was Joseph Stillman Willis who married Margaret Desta Coy and their daughter, Anna Frances Willis,  married William McKinley Hickman.  One of the sons of Ephraim Boring and Margaret Willis Leak was named Joseph Stillman Boring.

Margaret Willis' brother was Mordecai Willis* (1847-1925) whose son was John Willis (wife Priscilla Jane Swaney (26 Jan 1874-10 Aug 1944), daughter of Kenneth Swaney and Mary Ann Nichols) whose daughter Minnie married Hoyt Woods. son of Sandy Wood, son of John Spicer Wood and his first wife, Mahala Leap. (This was the second link between John Woods and Joshua Woods.)  Eliza Jane Fouty (1851-1932), wife of Mordecai Willis,  was daughter of Samuel Fouty and Catherine Ann Lowther and was a niece of old Frederick Foughty, who warned Zach Hickman not to let his kids marry Leaches.  Foughty’s conflict with Thomas Leach is evidenced in his death record where Leach calls him "crazy".  Foughty is buried in Hickman Cemetery.

John M. Wood (1858-1945), the first son of Joshua Wood and Emmarillis Kight, married Sarah Ellen Rowland (1861-1951) and both are buried at Limerick.  Their daughter, Eva M. Wood (23 Jan 1896-Feb 1976) married Charles Chamberlin (30 May 1898-Feb 1967), brother to Margaret Chamberlin (13 Sept 1901-Nov 1980) who married Charles Brohard (21 Mar 1898-24 Oct 1992), grandson of Matilda Bailey (27 Mar 1819-24 Jul 1895) and George Washington Brohard (5 Apr 1813-7 Dec 1899) who came from Virginia to Ohio (see Source 19). Eva’s sister, Jennie (23 Jan 1898-June 1985) married Clarence Leach (20 Oct 1894-2 June 1960), son of Madison Leach (1856-1901) and Susan Bailes (1856-1920). A brother Albert Wood (“Grump”, 21 Aug 1900-1952) married Dorothy Grow (1914-1972), who later married Glen Austin Brown (1919-1998).  Grump and Dorothy’s last son, Gary Paul Wood (8 Jan 1951-late Nov 1993) was caretaker of the Robert Hickman farm after my father (Jesse Hickman) died until Gary’s death as the result of an accident.  Gary’s son, Gary Jr. (8 Jan 1974-15 Aug 1996), died of cancer.  Recently, a daughter of Charles Chamberlin and Eva Wood died, namely, Anna Maxine Chamberlin Vance (6 Nov 1918-4 May 2006), the last of the old-timers at Limerick, according to Shelba Burns Elam Brown.  Maxine was the widow of Edgar Vance (15 Jan 1914-21 Sept 1987).

* My father, Jesse Hickman, was basically an atheist.  One of his justifications came from a conversation in the old Hickman blacksmith shop between Mordecai Willis and Robert Matson Hickman, my great-grandfather.  My father, who witnessed the conversation said Robert and Mordecai were discussing a powerful preacher named Crabtree who at the time was preaching over at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Mord said “Rob, why don’t you come over to church and listen to Preacher Crabtree?”  Robert said “Mord, what good has he done?”  Mord said “Well he has gotten Joe Finch converted and such-and such a person converted,”  The upshot of it was that not long afterward, Preacher Crabtree ran off to parts unknown with his buddy’s wife.  My father would finish with the statement that these preachers don’t believe what they were preaching themselves.  My father was fond of challenging people about their religion.
