As Donald Lines Jacobus once said, �the correct way to spell your surname is the way you yourself spell it.�
For the purposes of this paper the name will be spelled �Madden� unless a particular document is quoted and then the spelling used in that document will be utilized.
While most people assume that the name �Madden� is Irish, this is not necessarily true.
There are many �Madden�s� of Irish descent, however it is also possible that this branch has Germanic or Scottish origins.
In the case of Nathan Madden of Greenup County, Kentucky this author has never seen any official documentation that shows him to be of Irish descent.
It is true that some references to him on the internet state that he is Irish, however I have never seen any source quoted to back up this claim except one Kentucky Death
Certificate. That certificate is for Nathan�s grandson Jonathan, son of Jonathan. It states that Nathan�s son Jonathan was born in Ireland.
The informant was Thomas Madden a great grandson of Nathan. He is obviously wrong but this may be part of the basis for the Irish origins of this family.
It is reasonable to SUSPECT that this family had an Irish background. As will be shown later in this paper it appears that Nathan was born in Maryland and it is
POSSIBLE the name was originally spelled �Maiden�, Madding or any one of several phonetic variations that might be Irish, Germanic or Scottish in origin.
There are Maryland documents which, over a period of time, show an evolution of the name �Madden� from �Maiden and various similar spellings.
Future researchers should keep this in mind when working with Maryland documents.
One other point should be made for the benefit of future researchers; don�t rule out the possibility that records on this Madden family MIGHT be found in Pennsylvania.
Milton Rubincam, FASG points out in Pitfalls in Genealogical Research that �Maryland claimed the lower fringe of Pennsylvania counties, from a point above
Philadelphia. Families who lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1763 may have found themselves in Cecil County Maryland, after Mason and Dixon had completed their
great survey in 1767.� So it is POSSIBLE that Nathan was born in Maryland about 1770 but records on his parents might be in Pennsylvania.
One of the main problems in researching Nathan Madden of Greenup County, Kentucky is the scarcity of ORIGINAL SOURCE RECORDS which mention him by name,
in a specific place and at a specific time. In fact I have only found eight(8) definite and one(1) possible record.

Since no first name is given it is impossible to say for sure if this is Nathan, however when we consider that Nathan married 3 years later in Lewis County,
it is a strong possibility. Also keep in mind that the Madden�s lived in extreme southwest Greenup County, almost on the line of Lewis County to the west and Carter
County to the south.
As scant as these clues are regarding Nathan Madden they can provide us with a timeframe for his date of birth. Since the 1810 census gives his age as 26 to 45 it can
seen that he was born sometime between 1765 and 1784. Utilization of the 1820 census narrows the timeframe even more since it shows him as at least 45 years of age
or older. This means that 10 years earlier he had to be at least 35 years of age or older. However the 1810 census states that he is not over 45 years of age therefore in
1810 he had to be between 35 and 45 years of age which gives a birth year somewhere between 1765 and 1775. This also dispels some internet communications which
give him a birth year of 1753.
The attached footnote may also be the source for Nathan Madden of Greenup County, Kentucky being the same Nathan Madden that married Ann Hutton on
January 21, 1778 in Caroline County, Maryland. It is true that a Nathan Madden married Ann Hutton on that date but it seems EXTREMELY unlikely that it was
Nathan Madden of Greenup. At the earliest, Nathan of Greenup was born in 1765 and would have only been 13 years of age in 1778. When you consider that he may
have been born later than 1765 the marriage becomes more improbable. There is also the matter of the birth year of his oldest daughter Mary Ann which later
census records and her death record give as about 1794. It would be extremely unusual for a couple married in 1778 not to have a child for 15 years. Although Nathan
and his wife could have lost children prior to Elizabeth the dates still do not support Nathan of Greenup as the husband of Ann Hutton. Since no record of Nathan or
Dennis have been found in the 1790 Federal Census of Maryland showing them as the �heads� of families it would appear that they probably were not married and
living on their on at that time. It is possible, of course, that they were married and still living in the household of their father. However it seems more likely that
Nathan was married sometime between 1790 and 1793.
What we do know about Nathan, mainly from the records of his children, is that he was born in Maryland and as discussed above this was probably sometime
between 1765 and 1775. He was presumably married in Maryland and an educated guess for the timeframe of this marriage is 1790 to 1793. His first known
child was a daughter named Mary Ann born, about 1794, in the state of Maryland. Based on the birthplaces of his children he was still in Maryland when his
daughter Elizabeth was born in about the year 1799/1800. He apparently moved to Ohio shortly after 1800 since his next child, Nancy R. was born in Ohio
in about the year 1805/06. With the exception of the 1880 census which gives his son, Jonathan a birth date of 1807, all other census records give Jonathan a
birth date of 1806 in Ohio. By 1810 Nathan is living in Greenup County, Kentucky and is enumerated in the 1810 census. In fact he may have been in Greenup
for a very short period when the census was enumerated since he does not appear to be living in the Three Prong area at that date. By the time of the 1820
census he is living on Three Prong and is surrounded by families such as the Horsley�s, Zorne�s, Dummit�s and Sartin�s. Not long after the 1820 census and
probably about 1824 Nathan lost his wife, presumably to death, and he also married off his last child Jonathan on July 26, 1824. Less than a year after
Jonathan�s marriage Nathan also remarried. He married Nancy Malone in Lewis County on May 31, 1825. As previously stated she was a Horsley, apparently
the daughter of James Taylor Horsley, prior to her marriage to Richard Malone and someone that Nathan had known for a number of years. At this point
Nathan Madden and his bride seem to disappear from all records.
Using these available records it can be determined that Nathan Madden had four children that lived to maturity, they were:

2. Elizabeth Madden Born circa 1799 to Between July 9, 1870 and September 27, 1874
3. Nancy R. Madden Born circa 1805 to Summer 1884

Mary Ann Madden is the eldest child of Nathan Madden known to live to maturity. She was born in about the year 1794 in the state of Maryland. She was already
a child of at least six years of age when her father moved the family to Ohio. By the time she moved with her family to Kentucky she was a teenager.
At the time of the 1810 Federal Census of Greenup County, Kentucky she is enumerated in her father�s family as between 16 and 26 years of age.
She was approximately 24 years of age when her marriage is recorded in the records of Greenup County, Kentucky.

At the time of the 1820 Federal Census of Greenup County, Kentucky she and her husband James Sarton are living next to his father Claborn and one house
away from her father Nathan. Mary Ann is enumerated as being between 26 and 45 years of age ( she was probably about 26) and her husband James appears
to be between 18 and 26 years of age. Note that at the time of the marriage two years earlier his father had to give his consent so it seems probable that he
was younger than his wife. No children are shown in the household.
Ten years later the 1830 Federal Census of Greenup County, Kentucky enumerates the James Sartin family as consisting of one male 20 to 30 years of age and
one female 30 to 40 years (probably about 36). No children are indicated. They are living within a few houses of the Horsley�s, her brother Jonathan and his
father Claborn.
No other record has been found by this writer until her record of death recorded in the Vital Records of Greenup County, Kentucky for the year 1855.
In the 1840 census she is probably living in someone else�s household and not listed under her name, but this does not explain her not being found in the
1850 census.

Her death record leaves some questions. Since it shows her as single and not widowed there is the possibility that James left her. The remark �old maid� seems
to confirm the suspicion that she died without having any children.
Since there is no evidence of a tombstone we can only speculate as to her place of burial, but it seems likely that it is in the Three Prong area.

Based on existing records it would appear that Elizabeth Madden was born about 1799 in the state of Maryland. It is possible she is a little older since the
1810 Federal Census of Greenup gives her age as between 16 and 26, however later census records are fairly consistent in giving an age that indicates 1799.
She was just a toddler when her father moved the family from Maryland to Ohio and probably about 9 or 10 when they moved to Kentucky.
Her future husband, James Horsley, lived right next to the Madden�s and at about 16 years of age the Marriage Records of Greenup County record her
marriage to James. They were married in her father Nathan�s home.

Basheba Hosley died at the age of 16 on August 2, 1854 according to the Vital Records of Greenup County, Kentucky on the Greenup USGenWeb.
Her father at that time is shown as James Hosley.
The Ruhanna Lee who died in Greenup County on January 23, 1912 at age 72 is undoubtedly Ruhama, the daughter of James W. and Elizabeth Madden
Horsley. See Kentucky Death Records 1911-2000. In the 1900 Federal Census of Greenup County she is shown as born in March 1839 and is a widow.
She and her sister Elizabeth Mullins are living together.
Elizabeth Horsley Mullins was born in March 1828 according to the 1900 Federal Census of Greenup County although most census records show her
born about 1831/32. In the 1900 Federal Census of Greenup County she is widowed and living with her sister Ruhama Lee.
The Johnathin Horseley that died in Greenup County on November 23, 1919 at the age of 77 is probably the son of James W. and Elizabeth Madden
Horsley. See Kentucky Death Records 1911-2000. In the 1900 Census of Greenup he is shown as born in January, 1842. He has been married 38 years
and his wife Rachell is the mother of 14 children, 8 of whom are still living in 1900.
At the time of the 1880 Federal Census of Greenup County James D. Horsley is shown as born about 1844 and married to Martha J.
He is living next to his cousin William M. Madden and only one house from his mother�s brother Jonathan Madden. The Carter County Marriage Index shows
that he married Martha J. Jordan on January 23, 1862. The 1930 Federal Census of Greenup shows James Horsley age 85 , born in Kentucky, living with the
Joseph Lee family and listed as an uncle. Undoubtedly this Joseph Lee is the son of James Horsley�s sister Ruhama Madden Lee.
The Marriage Bonds of Greenup County states that Sarah Horsley age 24, born in Greenup County married James J. (T) Horsley who was 40 years of age and
also born in Greenup County. The marriage was July 28, 1858 in Greenup County. He is living in Lewis County at the time of the 1870 Federal Census with
his daughter Martha 10 years of age and two other children, Sarah E. 8 years of age and Jonathin 6 years of age, but Sarah is not listed and may have died by this time.
There are probably other children not yet identified however caution should be used with assigning some of the children in this family because it appears
POSSIBLE that another family may have been absorbed in to the James Horsley and William Horsley families between the 1830 and 1840 census.
We know from court records that William Horsley was made guardian of one of Taylor Horsley�s daughters and the James Horsley family in the 1840
census looks as if he may have also taken in a family. In the 1840 census James Horsley has 2 females 40 to 50 years of age and POSSIBLY some children
that could be someone else�s. One of the older females is obviously James� wife Elizabeth but who is the other one and do they also have children shown
in the census of this family?

Nancy R. Madden, the third child of Nathan Madden to live to maturity, was born about 1805/06 in the state of Ohio. When she was only 3 or 4 years old
her father moved his family to Greenup County, Kentucky. Nancy would live the rest of her life in the southwest corner of Greenup County in an area
known as Three Prong.
The Nathan Madden family settled near several members of the Horsley family. In 1815 Nancy�s older sister Elizabeth married James W. Horsley and in
1819 Nancy followed suit by marrying William Horsley. She was probably only 14 years of age, 15 at most.

Joanna Dudley Horsley, the wife of James Taylor Horsley, a Revolutionary War veteran. They had also welcomed Nancy�s brother, Jonathan, into the
extended family when he married Elizabeth Horsley, a daughter of James Horsley, in 1824. To further complicate matters Nathan Madden, their father,
married Nancy Horsley Malone, the widow of Richard Malone and the daughter of James Taylor Horsley.

On May 12, 1881 Nancy gives her deposition, as the widow of William Horsley, who she states died on February 1, 1876. She is making application,
as his widow, for pension benefits for his War of 1812 service. She goes on to say that they were married in March 1818 in the home of James Horsley
at the mouth of Grassy Creek. The pension goes on to say that Nancy died during the summer of 1884.
MISC. NOTES ON THE CHILDREN OF WILLIAM AND NANCY
Perry C. Horsley died in Greenup County died on October 6, 1918 at the age of 83 according to Kentucky Deaths 1911-2000. In the 1870 Federal Census
of Greenup he is listed as Perry Horsely with his wife Mary and three children; Francis age 11, Elizabeth age 9 and Jane age 1. He is listed as 39 years
of age and is living next to his brother who is listed as William Horseley.
William Horseley is listed in the 1870 Federal Census of Greenup County as 41 years of age, his wife is Mary. They have three children; Rhoda age 6,
Barbara A. age 4 and Ruhama age 1. In the 1880 Federal Census of Greenup William is listed as 43 years of age, his wife Mary also as 43 years of age.
They have several children and are living next to his brother Watt A. Horsley and within several houses of his mother, his sister Rhoda Mulhall and
his sister Leah Reister. By the time of the 1900 Federal Census of Greenup his wife Mary is enumerated as a widow.
Leah (shown as Lear in many records) was given a very biblical name. Based on the 1850 Federal Census, which gives her age as 17, she was born about
1834 but this disagrees with most records which give her date of birth as about 1840. Greenup County Marriage Bonds show that on August 11, 1870 a
Learh Horsley and Easom Royster were married and the surety was Perry Horsley, presumably her brother. Lear Rister died on May 2, 1927 in Greenup
County at the age of 87. See Kentucky Death Records 1911-2000.
On April 2, 1868 Wat Andrew Hosley married Margaret Fuget in Scioto County, Ohio. In the 1880 Federal Census of Greenup Watt A. Horsley and his wife
Margaret are listed next to his brother William. No children are shown in the household. It appears that the Margaret Horseley found in Hamilton County,
Ohio in the 1900 Federal Census may be the wife of Watt A. Horsley. She is 60 years of age, a widow and living with her daughter who is also a widow. Her
daughter�s last name is Jameson but she has three children that are named Rhoden indicating that she was married first to a Rhoden.
Joanna Horsley married first Rial Rhoden and secondly Skinner Reister. She is definitely married to Skinner Reister by the time of the 1860 Federal Census
of Greenup. She is still living at the time of the 1880 Federal Census of Greenup and her mother Nancy is living in her household. Her age varies quite a bit
in the census records but the 1850 shows her as 21 and the 1860 as 31 giving an approximate date of birth of 1829.
Jonathan Madden

Jonathan Madden, the only known son of Nathan Madden to live to maturity, was born in about the year 1806 in the state of Ohio. When Jonathan was about three or
four years of age his father Nathan moved the family to Greenup County, Kentucky. It does not appear that they resided in the Three Prong area initially but were
living in that area by the time of the 1820 Federal Census.
Nothing is really known of Jonathan�s early life. He probably was working along side his father and performing many of the chores before the age of ten. William
Moore of Carter County wrote in 1840, �I commenced hard work very young, at 12 years of age, grubbing and clearing ground, and would help my father.� As a six year
old boy Jonathan would have been caught up in the excitement created by the war of 1812 and the fact that his Horsley neighbors enlisted. He undoubtedly played and
worked along side his friends and met his future wife Elizabeth at an early age.
If their living conditions were typical for the time and place then Nathan�s family of six shared a one room log cabin. It may have been a 1 � story and contained a
loft which would have provided sleeping space for some or all of the children. Most of the furniture, what little there was, would probably have been homemade.
The William Moore referred to in the previous paragraph also wrote in 1840, � when married, I made my entire outfit for house keeping from the rolling pin to the
cupboard.�
Much of the meat for the table would have been wild game supplemented with beef, pork and mutton. In addition to those foods grown in the garden there was
time devoted to gathering wild berries, fruits and nuts. Wild honey and sugar maples supplied syrup for sweetening.
Gathering from the garden or the wild was a never-ending job.
As Jonathan grew into young manhood he spent more and more time visiting the home of the Madden families neighbor James Taylor Horsley. While James Horsley
as a veteran of the Revolutionary War was probably very interesting in and of himself, Jonathan�s main interest was his daughter Elizabeth. Jonathan and Elizabeth
had known each other all of their lives and the Marriage Bond Records of Greenup County show that they were married on June 26, 1824. Jonathan was either
18 or 19 years of age.
It is possible that Jonathan and Elizabeth began their married life living at the home of his father Nathan Madden. Nathan was probably already a widower at the time
of Jonathan�s marriage, at any rate all of Jonathan�s sisters were married and living with husbands leaving the Nathan Madden household with room for a son and
daughter-in-law.
It is also possible that Nathan had already moved to the adjoining county of Lewis where he married Nancy Malone in May of 1825.
Approximately two years after the marriage of Jonathan and Elizabeth, daughter of James Taylor Horsley, started their family with the birth of a son,
Matthew D. Madden. After that it appears, as discussed in more detail below, that Jonathan and Elizabeth had three more children before Elizabeth died in early 1834.
Slightly less than one year after his first wife�s death Jonathan remarried another Elizabeth Horsley, undoubtedly a cousin of his first wife, and the 19 year old
daughter of William Horsley. Their marriage is recorded in the Marriage Bonds of Greenup County, Kentucky as follows:
�Jonathan Madden to Elizabeth Horsely on Dec. 13, 1834. William Horsely, bondsman. William Horsely is the father of Elizabeth.�
[ This marriage raises some serious questions about the parents of this Elizabeth Horsley, the second wife of Jonathan Madden. If she was the daughter of William and
Nancy Madden Horsley then she married her uncle by blood since Jonathan Madden and Nancy Madden Horsley were brother and sister. This Elizabeth Horsley
consistently gives her year of birth as 1815 in the census records and in the 1900 Federal Census it is given as March 1815. This is almost exactly 4 years before
William and Nancy were married. This might mean that William was married and lost a wife prior to his marriage to Nancy, and that Elizabeth is his daughter
by this previous marriage. If William was born around 1794 this is certainly possible but to further complicate matters the William and Nancy Horsley household
does not show a female born between 1810 and 1820 in either the 1820 or the 1830 census records. It therefore seems more likely that she is the daughter of William
Horsley Sr. who was in Greenup at the time of the 1820 census and appears to be across the river in Adams County, Ohio at the time of the 1830 census and back in
Greenup at the time of the 1840 census.]
The exact number of children Jonathan Madden had by his two wives is the subject of some controversy. If we consider only documented sources such as census,
marriage and tax records then he was the father of a total of 12 children by both his wife�s. If we include those which are probably attributable to family tradition
then the total jumps to 14 due to the addition of Louisa and Saphria.
There is also the possible son listed in the 1840 census which would make the total 15. These latter three children will not be discussed in detail since there is no
direct documentation regarding them, and it appears that they died before maturity. They are mentioned here since family tradition does indicate the existence
of the two daughters.
There is some documentation for at least one of these children since Jonathan�s second wife Elizabeth (Betsy, Bessy) states in the 1900 census that she is the
mother of 10 children 6 of whom are still living. Since we can document 9 of her children this would indicate one more that apparently died without
showing up in any records, but even this 1900 census record is subject to some controversy since in 1900 she had more than 6 children still living. They
were: John, Telitha Jane, Samuel S., David R., William M., Elizabeth, King Hiram and Jonathan. We know for sure that Matthew D., and James were dead
from documented records. One researcher states that Issac (Isaac) D. died in 1896. It would also appear that Martha Amanda died prior to 1900 since her
husband Samuel V. Clark is shown in the 1900 census of Carter County as a widower. So 8 children were still living at the time of the 1900 census. If she
only had a total of 10 children and Louisa was one of them then there is still a question regarding the �unknown male child�. If he was their son then she
actually had 11 children.
Saphria
Saphria is mentioned by researcher Mary Sloan of Grayson, Kentucky and Saphria is also mentioned in a paper apparently written in 1961 and
referred to in footnotes of this document. Since Matthew was apparently born in the latter part of 1826 and Martha Amanda was born about 1831
there is a 5 to 6 year gap which may indicate the birth of another child about 1828. If so then she was dead by the time of the 1830 Federal Census
of Greenup County since the only female shown at that time is his wife.
There is also, at least in my opinion, some question regarding the name Saphria. A database search of the 1850 Federal Census was made for
any Saphria born between 1820 and 1830 for anyplace in the United States. Not one single person was found with that name.
However, when the same search was made for the name Sophia there were over 9,000.
It seems more likely that her name was Sophia and not Saphria. Since family tradition
shows her name as Saphria, which is the way it will stand in this paper.
Louisa
Louisa is mentioned by researcher Mary Sloan of Grayson, Kentucky with the dates 1842- 1845. This is presumably based on family tradition but
there is a gap between Isaac�s birth about 1841 and that of David R. in 1845 which gives some support to the possibility that a child was born
during that timeframe. If the 1900 Federal Census is correct that Elizabeth Horsley Madden had 10 children then Louisa might be the other child.
Unknown Male Child
The 1840 Federal Census of Greenup County shows Jonathan�s family with two males under the age of 5. John H. born in 1836 would be one of these boys. The other one may or may not be another son. The 1840 census includes every person in the household and not just family members. Quite often a cousin, nephew or even a non-family member may be living in the household at the time of a census enumeration, everyone is included. If he was their son then his placement becomes difficult but would possibly be between John and Telitha.
Based on all research to date (9/12/2005) it appears that Jonathan and his two wife�s had the following children:

Jonathan Madden, Lower District, 1 white male over 21, 250 acres located on Three Prong watercourse with a value of $200. 4 horses and mares with
a value of $100, 14 cattle with a value over $50 of $35. Three children between the 7 and 17 years of age.
This is an increase of 150 acres over his 100 acres reported in 1839. It also means that in 1843 Jonathan had three children in his household that were
born between the years 1826 and 1836. This fact fits nicely with Matthew born in 1826, Martha born in 1831 and James born in 1834.
GREENUP COUNTY TAX LIST FOR 1847
In the year 1847 Matthew Madden is listed directly under Jonathan as 1 male over 21 years of age. This is the most compelling evidence that Matthew
is indeed the son of Jonathan as will be explained later in this document under Matthew Madden.
At the time of the 1850 Federal Census Matthew had left home, married and was living just a few miles away in Carter County. Even with the loss of
Matthew the Jonathan Madden household was getting crowded and including both husband and wife it contained 10 people; 8 children and 2 adults.
Jonathan�s sister Elizabeth, wife of James Horsley, lives on one side and the Philip Zornes family on the other. His other sister Catharine, wife of
William Horsley, lives a couple of houses away.

By 1880 Jonathan�s long life is beginning to come to an end. He is 74 years of age, he has lived through 3 major wars; the War of 1812, The Mexican War
and the Civil War. With his two wife�s he has produced 14 children, possibly 15. They were Matthew D., Martha Amanda, James, John H., Telitha Jane,
Isaac D., David R., Samuel Seton, William M., Elizabeth, King Hiram and Jonathan. Of these 14 children 12 lived to maturity and 10 of them gave him
41living grandchildren at the time of the 1880 census. All of them were living within 30 miles of Three Prong and most within 2 or 3 miles.
He did it while living in a log cabin, which even two people, in today�s world would consider extremely tiny. He did it without running water, an indoor
bathroom, electricity, air conditioning, radio�s, television or phones. There were no cars, planes, modern highways, or even trains for many of the years.
He managed to do it without food stamps, social security, and Medicare or farm subsidies. In short, Jonathan Madden with the help of his family and
neighbors accomplished what would be considered impossible in today�s world of modern conveniences.
We do not have a definite date of death for Jonathan although we know he is dead by 1900 when his wife Elizabeth is enumerated as a widow.
Although there is no tombstone marking the location of his burial it seems most likely that Jonathan is buried in Three Prong Cemetery at the
juncture of Boone Hollow and Three Prong Creek.

Matthew D. Madden, the first child of Jonathan Madden and his first wife Elizabeth Horsley was apparently born sometime between June 1, 1826 and
May 31, 1827. He was undoubtedly born on Three Prong in southwestern Greenup County. No record of his early life is known to exist other than his
place in the 1830 and 1840 census in the family of his father Jonathan. He did attend school at least to the point that he learned to read and write.
His first mention by name is in the 1847 Tax Records of Greenup County, Kentucky next to his father Jonathan in the southern district. This is an
extremely important document since it is the most convincing proof that he is the son of Jonathan.
How Matthew came to meet his wife and second cousin once removed, Sophia Estill, is conjecture. The tax records of Greenup County do record
Estill�s living in the southern district and possibly in close association with Jonathan Madden�s family. Based on their names it is possible they
were brothers or uncles of Sophia. Her family however was from Fleming County and appear to have resided in the Poplar Plains vicinity about
40 miles away although the tax records indicate that Sophia�s father David R. Estill may have been living on Fox Creek by the time Matthew and
Sophia were married. Since Sophia�s grandmother was a daughter of Matthew Horsley there would have been interaction between the family in
Fleming and their relatives in Greenup, both Horsley and Madden.
Matthew and Sophia were married on September 30, 1849 and their first child David Otho was born August 18, 1849 in Carter County, Kentucky.
If the date of their marriage and David�s birth are correct then this goes a long way toward explaining why Matthew and Sophia cared for
Matthew�s sister Martha Amanda during her pregnancy.
Based on the Vital Records of Lewis County, Federal Census records and Death Certificates from Texas and Kentucky it appears that Matthew
Madden and Sophia Estill had 10 children; 5 boys and 5 girls.

Within a week or so of this census Sophia became pregnant with her sixth child, for the Vital Records of Lewis County for the year 1861 record the following birth.

Sometime during the Civil War Matthew Madden became a Deputy Marshall for the Ninth Congressional District. He also contracted or showed the first
signs of a medical condition called Scrofula which eventually took his life.
On the 18th day of August 1867 Matthew Madden purchased approximately 326 acres in Carter County on which he was already living. Actually the deed
says that he swapped land, presumably in Lewis County, for the land in Carter County. The land was on Trough Camp Branch. At the time this paper is
being written the exact location is not known however Trough Camp Branch runs roughly parallel to Interstate 64 north of Olive Hill.

In a letter dated March 10, 1974 Cleff Madden, the son of James Franklin Madden, wrote David K. Tucker (me) the following: �Yes my fathers name was
James Franklin Madden & I told you I thought there was another girl and that her name was Laura madden she married a man by the name of James.
They lived in Fleming Co. & she was buried there. My Great Gran Father Johnathan Madden lived at Three Prong in Greenup Co.�

It is impossible to say if Laura intentionally misrepresented her age or if there is just a mistake, but the 1860 census gives her age as 6 (1854) and the
1880 census gives her age as 28 (1852). It could be either one but the 1852 date seems more reasonable since she probably would have been listed in
the Vital Records if born in 1854.
On August 12, 1874 Matthew and Sophia Madden became the proud parents of another daughter. They named her Annie Lucie.
Just a few months later on the 19th of January 1875 Matthew and Sophia attended the wedding of their first born, David Otho Madden. He married
Saran Ann Counts, daughter of Christopher S. Counts and Mary Ann Bishop.
The following year Matthew and Sophia�s last child, James Franklin Madden was born on September 16, 1876.
During the month of May 1880 Matthew D. Madden�s life came to an end. The 1880 Mortality Schedule of Carter County, Kentucky provides the following
information regarding his death.

�Matthias Madden served as deputy marshall in the 9th Congressional District in this state for 18 months. It was during this time that the disease
made its appearance which eventually ended his life. This was during the War of the Rebellion.�
It is not known if Dr. York simply made a mistake in giving his name as �Matthias� or if Matthew was called Matthias by his family and friends. This is
the only time I have seen the name �Matthias� used in any document.

One family researcher working on the Estill family of Fleming County, Kentucky reports that Sophia Estill Madden moved back to Fleming County and
died there before 1900. This seems very possible since she had sisters and a brother still living there. It is possible she made the move when her daughter
Laura Madden James, wife of George E. James, moved to with her husband to Muses Mill, Fleming County. It seems likely, although undocumented,
that she was dead prior to 1887 when her minor daughter Annie Lucy was married in Rowan County, Kentucky to William Horsley.
The reason for this suspicion is due to the fact that Annie Lucy�s oldest brother, still living in Kentucky, Theodore Adolphus gave his permission for the
marriage. It is of course possible that Annie Lucy remained behind and was living with her brothers family and that Sophia was still alive in Fleming
County at the time. She was not enumerated at the time of the 1900 Federal Census of Kentucky and was presumably dead at that time.

As previously stated it appears that David Otho Madden was born on August 18, 1849, about a month and a half before his parents were married.
His death certificate gives his place of birth as Carter County. Since he is listed as 10/12 months old at the time of the Federal Census of Carter County,
Kentucky it is possible that he was born in there. However his mother Sophia is also shown in the 1850 Federal Census of Fleming County, Kentucky
living with her parents. This confusion might come from the fact that census takers often recorded members of a family during the 12 month period
prior to the census. If Sophia had been living at home anytime during the year 1849 then her parents may have given her name to the census taker.
It is also possible that if she was unmarried at the time of David Otho�s birth that he was born in Fleming County at the home of her parents.
Although there is no written or oral tradition regarding his name it was most likely taken from his mothers father, David R. Estill and her brother
Otho Estill.
Most of David Otho Maddens early life was spent in Lewis County. The 1860 Federal Census of Lewis County shows him to be 11 years of age and
attending school. It is presumed that he worked on his fathers farm and possibly those of his neighbors.
In the year 1867 the then 18 year old David moved with his family to Carter County, Kentucky. What prompted the family to move is not known, but it
would be Carter County where David met his future wife and continued to live until he moved to Texas.
At the time of the 1870 Federal Census of Carter County, Kentucky David Otho was still living at home with his parents. He is enumerated as 20 years of age
and a farmer.
Five months and one day after David Otho turned 25 he married Sarah Ann Counts on January 19, 1875. Sarah Ann was the daughter of Christopher S. Counts
and Mary Ann Bishop. Sarah was born on February 8, 1856 in Carter County, Kentucky. Sarah was just a couple of weeks shy of her 19th birthday at the time
of her marriage to David Otho Madden.
David was a farmer his whole life and Sarah was a housekeeper. This is confirmed by the census records and statements of his daughters Ida
(my grandmother) and Ruby. Ruby did however remember her mother saying that she taught school some in Kentucky, but I have never found any other
documentation to confirm this fact.
There are no deed records indicating that David ever bought property in Carter County, Kentucky.
Like many others he may have rented his land or possibly farmed land owned by his father-in-law Christopher Counts, who owned several thousand
acres in Carter County.
Two and a half years later, David and Sarah�s first child, a daughter named Florence was born on August 24, 1877. On March 12, 1880, she was followed
by a brother that they named George Walter Madden.
The joy brought about by the birth of his first son was short lived, for two months later David�s father Matthew passed away.

A little over two years later David and Sarah welcomed a new daughter into the world. Her name was Bertha Elizabeth Madden and she was born on
July 12, 1882 in Kentucky.
At the time of Bertha�s birth David Otho Madden was one month shy of his 32nd birthday, his family was growing and he was hearing about great farm
lands in Texas. Shortly after Bertha�s birth in July of 1882 the Maddens left Kentucky for their new home in Texas.
One interesting aspect regarding David Otho�s reason for leaving Kentucky is contained in a letter written about 90 years after they left. The letter is
from David Otho�s nephew Cleff Madden, the son of David Otho�s youngest brother James Franklin Madden. The letter is dated March 10, 1974 from
Olive Hill, Ky. and in it Cleff states, �I thank you very much for sending me Uncle Dave�s bible record of his family. I heard my Dad talk about him he said
they were making cross ties back on top of a hill & uncle Dave said he was going to leave Ky. For he said when a man got old he could not climb these hill�s,
he left and they never heard from him for 35 yr�s.
How they got to Texas is subject to a little family controversy. David and Sarah�s eldest daughter Florence related to the family that they came by wagon.
Depending on the year of departure Florence would have been somewhere between 4 and 7 years of age, certainly old enough to have some memory of the event.
David and Sarah�s daughter, and my grandmother, Ida Lee Madden Tucker remembers her parents stating that they �came from Lexington, Kentucky by train�.
Their daughter Ruby Lee Ora Madden Lanier stated that �they settled near Parks Schoolhouse within 1 mile of where they got off the train from Kentucky�.
It is possible that there is some truth in both statements. The family may have traveled from Carter County to Lexington by wagon and then on to Texas by train.
Florence as a young child may have just remembered the wagon part of the trip.
They apparently leased land for a few years or possibly worked the land on a share basis since the first deed recording a land purchase is in December of 1894.
Not long after arriving in Texas another daughter, Ethel L., was born on Tuesday, January 19, 1886.
Then on December 2, 1888 David and Sarah added a fourth daughter to their household. They named her Ida Lee Madden; she was my grandmother.
I asked her one time where her name came from and she told me that she was named after Ida Parks, wife of William Parks. I am not sure what Ida Parks maiden
name was but obviously she was someone that the Maddens knew and considered a friend. She was born in 1872 and lived in the same Precinct as the Maddens.
On September 1, 1891 David and Sarah lost a child due to premature birth. Then on October 13, 1893 David and Sarah celebrated the birth of their second son,
O. C. Madden.
With the birth of O. C. their family now contained 6 children although the oldest were already grown. David and Sarah decided it was time to own their own place
and on December 24, 1894 they gave themselves a Christmas present of 70 acres.
The land they bought was near the Parks Schoolhouse on the east side of Waxahachie and they were members of the Christian Church located on Main Street in
Waxahachie. According to their daughter Ruby they grew corn, maize, cotton and had a garden. Their livestock consisted of a mule for plowing, hogs and 4 milk cows.
They also raised and sold chickens and eggs.
On Thursday, February 4, 1897 David and Sarah welcomed into the world their last child, Ruby Lee Ora Madden. Their family was complete.
Any happiness at buying their own farm and completing their family would not last for long.
On October 13, 1900 little O. C. celebrated his 7th birthday, less that a month later he was dead. While helping his father he was kicked in the head by their mule.
He lived for a few days but died at 5:25 PM on November 7, 1900.
His father now made another land purchase that he had not planned on so soon. On November 10, 1900 David Otho Madden purchased Part of 26, Block 10 in the
Waxahachie City Cemetery. Little O. C. was the first to be laid to rest in this plot. Shortly afterward his father planted a rose bush on his grave.

Mrs. D. O. Madden, 75 years old, died at her home on the Brodhead Pike about 10:45 o�clock Wednesday night. She was well known in the Waxahachie community
and had lived here many years.
Mrs. Madden was a native of Kentucky. She was a member of the Christian Church.
The following children survive her: G. W. Madden, Waxahachie; Mrs. Florence Gillean, Big Springs; Mrs. Ida Tucker, Leonard, and Mrs. Ruby Lanier, Waxahachie.
Funeral services were announced for the residence at 3 p. m. Thursday, with Dr. E. S. Bledsoe, pastor of the Main Street Christian Church, officiating,
interment following the City Cemetery here.
Pallbearers were announced as follow: Gene Kidd, M. Willig, Jim Adair, J. S. Shinpaugh, G. A. Thomas, and D. A. Wakefield.

Funeral services for David Otho Madden, aged 83 years, who died at the home of his daughter Mrs. C. C. Lanier, Parks Street, were solemnized Friday morning
at 10 o�clock.
Mr. Madden, one, of the pioneers of this county, died at the home of his daughter, where he had been visiting recently, at 11 a. m. Thursday, morning.
Funeral services, with Rev. E. S. Bledsoe conducting, were held at the home of his daughter, and interment was in the City Cemetery.
Mr. Madden is survived by five children Mrs. C. C. Lanier, Waxahachie; G. W. madden of near Waxahachie; Mrs. Ethel McMullen, Chatfield; Mrs. Ida Tucker,
Leonard, and Mrs. R. L. Gillen (sp) of Big Springs, Texas.
Mr. Madden came to Texas from Carter County, Kentucky in 1882 first settling on the Park School House road where he lived until his wife died on June 3, 1931.
Mr. Madden has been in failing health for the last several years and a hard fall in recent months is thought to have hastened his death.
Ida Madden Tucker, daughter of David Otho Madden, related the following to her grandson, David K. Tucker, in the 1970�s. �Daddy�s death was hastened by a fall in
which he hit his head against a cement or brick pillar in front of Ruby�s (his daughter) house. Late one night after everyone had gone to bed Ruby heard the front door slam.
Upon checking they found him laying on the ground in front of the house. Later he said that he had been awakened by Sarah calling to him in the night and he had gotten
up and gone to her.� In a way I suppose that he did go to her.

I (David K. Tucker) once ask my grandmother, Ida Lee Madden Tucker, how she met my grandfather. She stated that she was at a �play party� and happened to be
sewing a button back on a friends dress. He walked up and said, �I�ve been looking for a girl that knows how to sew�. She said that was the first time they ever spoke.
�The play party was a popular form of American folk entertainment that included songs, dances, and sometimes games. Though based upon European and English
antecedents, play parties were truly an American phenomenon, first mentioned in print in 1837. The last play parties were performed in the 1950s.
Though documented in rural and frontier areas throughout the United States, they seem to have been most popular and lasted the longest in the rural South and Midwest.
"Skip to My Lou" and "Pig in a Parlor" are still sung today but without the movements and games.�

Almost nothing is known of John Madden, the second son of Matthew Madden and Sophia Estill.
In the 1860 Federal Census of Lewis County, Kentucky he is enumerated with his family as 10 years of age (1850) and attending school.
In the 1870 Federal Census of Carter County, Kentucky he is again enumerated with his family as 17 years of age, a farmer and able to read and write.
That is the last written record found on John Madden, son of Matthew and Sophia.
There is an interesting possibility based entirely on information in the 1880 Federal Census of Carter County. About 4 or 5 families from Laura Madden James
(John Madden�s sister) and her husband George E. James is the James Harris family. They are also just about 20 families away from the Sophia Madden family.
In the James Harris family is a Catherine Madden, 31 years of age and shown as either widowed or divorced. Catherine is shown to be the daughter of James Harris.
Also enumerated is Corah Madden, 8 years of age and the grand daughter of James Harris.
Could it be that John Madden married a Catherine Harris about 1870 or 1871 and then they had a daughter Corah about 1872. No marriage record has been found for
them or any death or census record for John. If Corah lived and a marriage record can be found for her it might be possible to find a death certificate for her that
would give her fathers name.

This entry in the vital records of Lewis County, Kentucky marks the birth of Matthew and Sophia Estill Maddens third son, Theodore Adolphus Madden.
The basis for his somewhat unusual name has not been found. Most of his life he was simply called Adolph or more often simply Dolph.
In the 1860 Federal Census of Lewis County, Kentucky he is enumerated in his father Matthew�s family as; Adolphus, five years of age and born in Kentucky.
In the 1870 Federal Census of Carter County, Kentucky he is again enumerated in his father Matthew�s family as; Theodore, fifteen years of age, born in
Kentucky and attending school.

The WWI Registration Card for Pierce Earl Madden gives his date of birth as July 27, 1899. He is living in Soldier, Kentucky and gives his place of employment
as the Ashland Fire Brick Co. of Soldier, Ky. His nearest relative is listed as Maggie Madden but no relationship is shown, although it must be his mother.
He signs his name in a clear and very neat manner. Ohio Deaths 1958-2000 on Ancestry.com state that Pierce E. Madden died in Muskingum County, Ohio
on May 2, 1966. The SS Death Index shows that he was born on July 27, 1899 and died in May 1966 in Zanesville, Ohio.
Otho E. Madden is buried next to his parents in Eagle Hall Cemetery in Carter County, Kentucky.
His dates are shown as August 24, 1880 to May 25, 1902.
Edith Madden married Zavan (Van) Gearheart sometime between 1910 and 1920. When Theadore Adolphus Madden died in 1921 there were two death
certificates filled out for him. On one the informant was his wife Maggie and on the other the informant was Van Gayheart, his son-in-law.
Edith and Zavan are buried in Trumbo Cemetery.

Marie Madden was born in June 1889 according to the 1900 census. In the 1920 census she is shown as a widow with a son Wilbur. According to Kentucky
Birth Records 1911-2000 a Wilbur Howard was born to a woman with the maiden name Marie Madden on March 26, 1912.

Two day before Christmas of 1869 the Madden household celebrated the marriage of their eldest daughter and sister Laura A. to George E. James.
By 1870 Matthew and Sophia Madden�s eldest daughter Laura had married George E. James and was living just 3 families away from her parents.
In a letter dated March 10, 1974 Cleff Madden, the son of James Franklin Madden, wrote David K. Tucker (me) the following:
�Yes my fathers name was James Franklin Madden & I told you I thought there was another girl and that her name was Laura Madden she married a
man by the name of James. They lived in Fleming Co. & she was buried there. My Great Gran Father Johnathan Madden lived at Three Prong in Greenup Co.�

The WWI Registration Card for Amos Ransom James gives his date of birth as January 16, 1873 and his wife as Nancy Susan. He is living in Muses Mill,
Fleming County, Kentucky. He is possibly the same Amos that died in Martin County, Kentucky at the age of 91 on May 7, 1964. See Kentucky Death Record
Certificate #11464. However if it is the same person then his SS Death Record give his date of birth as October 30, 1872 and not January 16, 1873.
The WWI Registration Card for Clarence Arkemdis James gives his date of birth as September 2, 1887. It states that he is single and is living in Ashland,
Boyd County, Kentucky.
The WWI Registration Card for Claude James gives his date of birth as April 12, 1885 and his wife as Maude Lee. He is living in Ashland, Boyd County,
Kentucky. He is probably the same Claude that died in Boyd County, Kentucky at the age of 33 on October 23, 1918. See Kentucky Death Record Certificate # 24801.
The Boyd County USGenweb site shows that he is buried in the Ashland Cemetery and that his stone is marked, Claude E. James, 1885-1918.

Madden, I wouldn�t know for sure. It may be on Ella Madden Abbott�s gravestone.
Cliff Madden has a brother Clyde Madden, Soldier, Kentucky, 41173 that may have some information for you. Clifford & Clyde were first cousins

In the 1920 Census of Rowan County Edgar, his wife Effie and son Roy are living in Rowan County. The Birth Records of Kentucky 1911-2000 show that his
wife was Evie Trumbo. In the 1910 census of Carter County she is shown as Eva and living just a short distance from her future husband. She died sometime
between 1920 and 1930 when he is shown as a widower and his son Roy is living in Carter county with his aunt and uncle. The SS Death Index shows that
Edgar Madden was born on July 5, 1892 and died in August 1962 in Indiana. His SS card was issued in Kentucky.

Chloe Madden is undoubtedly the same as shown having two children in Boyd County in the 1920�s and according to the 1930 census of Boyd County is
married to Ross Keith. The age, location and unusual first name �Chloe� fit very well.
Based on the available records it appears that James Franklin Madden and his wife Georgia Ely Madden had the following children.

This would seem to agree with a letter from Cleff Madden to David K. Tucker dated March 10, 1974. In that letter Cleff stated, �I have one brother living (Clyde) &
3 sisters (Chloe, Laura, and Mable) & one brother dead (Claude) and two sisters (Pearl & Irene)�. The names in parentheses are mine. This accounts for 7 plus
Cleff which makes eight children.

Very little is known of Martha Amanda Madden. The 1850 Federal Census of Greenup County shows her in the household of her father Jonathan as �age 19,
born in Kentucky�. She was presumably born at home on Three Prong in about the year 1831. Her mother would therefore be Jonathan�s first wife Elizabeth
Horsley the daughter of James Taylor Horsley and Joanna Dudley. Since the Jonathan Madden family is not enumerated in the 1860 census the next record
is of her marriage in Lewis County on June 20, 1857 to Samuel V. Clark. It is also interesting to note that her marriage to Samuel shows up in Fleming County
marriage records with the same date. Possibly they were married in one county and the marriage was filed in the other county. Based on a birth year of 1831
Martha was 26 or 27 at the time of her marriage. At the time and in this area her marriage was later that the norm.
It appears from the records available to us that Martha became pregnant during the summer of 1856 since she gave birth to Henry J. Clark in either March or
May of 1857. It seems likely that she moved to Lewis County and resided with her brother Matthew during the pregnancy. The question then becomes, was
Samuel the father or did he simply marry a young unwed mother. It is a question that will probably never be answered and really doesn�t need to be since
Henry was raised as his son.
In the 1860 Federal Census of Lewis County the Samuel V. Clarke family is listed as follows:

The Lewis County Vital Records for the year 1864 record the following birth:
�Dec 3, 1864, Sophia W. Clark, Female, born in Lewis Co. to Saml V. Clark and Martha Madden, white, parents residing in Lewis County.�
It is possible, although unproven, that Sophia was named for Sophia Estill Madden, the wife of Matthew Madden and probably the person that showed her the
most compassion during the difficult period of her pregnancy. The reason for this compassion might become more obvious when the circumstances surrounding
the birth of Matthew and Sophia Madden�s first child David Otho are considered.
I have never found Samuel or Martha in the 1870 or 1880 Federal Census records nor have I found any record of their daughter Sophia�s marriage at a later date.
However, Samuel and Martha Amanda Clark�s son Henry J. Clark is enumerated in the 1880 Federal Census of Lewis County, Kentucky.
That record is shown under Henry J. Clark.
Samuel V. Clark was enumerated in the 1890 Special Schedule of Veterans in Carter County, Kentucky as follows:

He is a boarder in the household of Alfred Tailor.
This indicates that Martha Amanda is dead. Her death would have occurred sometime between her daughter Sophia�s birth in 1864 and the 1900 census.
It is possible she is buried in Garrison, in the same Murphy lot as Samuel, but this is pure conjecture until supporting evidence can be found.
A search of the several volumes of Lewis County Kentucky Cemeteries does not show either Martha or Samuel.
A search of the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailors shows Samuel V. Clark as a member of the 16th Kentucky Regiment, Company I.
He is shown as having an alternate name of Samuel V. Clarke.
An Ancestry Message Board listing under the name Madden dated Feb 25, 2001 and submitted by Sue Madden states that Samuel Clark is buried in
Garrison, Kentucky in the Murphy lot. No information is given to explain the relation to the Murphy�s, if any, nor is there any source provided for this statement.
It appears that the data provided by Sue Madden comes from a paper written in 1961 by another researcher. Much of the data in this paper would probably
have been statements and traditions passed on by the elder members of the family. This same listing shows his middle initial incorrectly as �D�.
This would be an easily mistake to make since a �D� and �V� can sound very similar when spoken.

He is listed with his parents as 3 years of age in the 1860 Federal Census of Lewis County. I have never found him or his family in the 1870 Census records.
By 1880 Henry is married, has two children and is living in Quincy, Lewis County, Kentucky. He is living next door to his wife�s family, John W. and Sarah Lambert.

When a search was done for the name Henry J. Clark on WorldConnect another researcher working on this same family did show another daughter named
Bertha born in 1885. This same researcher gave Henry J. Clark�s date of birth as March 15, 1857 in Lewis County, Kentucky and his date of death as April 26, 1922.
This date of death needs to be verified since the Death Records of Kentucky show the Clark that died on April 26, 1922 as Henry T. Clark and not Henry J. Clark
and the place of death as Daviess County, Kentucky. Henry J. Clark was still living in Lewis County at the time of the 1920 Federal Census.
This same researcher gives his wife�s maiden name as Mary Ann Lambert and her place of birth as Carter County, Kentucky.

James Madden, the last child of Jonathan Madden and his first wife Elizabeth Horsley, was born on January 10, 1834 on Three Prong.
It is possible that Elizabeth died in child birth or certainly very soon afterward for 11 months and 3 day later Jonathan married his second wife,
Elizabeth Horsley, the daughter of William Horsley. As a result James never knew his birth mother.
Like most young men in that time and place James started working at an early age to help support the family, there simply wasn�t much time or need
to attend school and James never received a formal education.
The first document to mention James by name is the 1850 Federal Census of Greenup County when he is listed in the household of his father Jonathan as,
Jas. Madden, 16 years of age, born in Kentucky and a laborer.
How, when and where James met Nancy T. Howard is not known, but the result was marriage. The Marriage Records of Lewis County, Kentucky record:
�March 20, 1855, James Madden, resident of Carter County, 22 years old, to Nancy Howard a resident of Lewis County, 21 years of age, single and a resident
of Lewis County.� According to the Civil War Pension record for James Madden they were married by Mathias C. Merideth, Esq.
Even though the marriage records state that James was a resident of Carter County it seems likely that he was already living in Lewis at the time of their
marriage or at least they continued to live there from that time, for less than a year later their first child was born in Lewis County.
Sarah E. Madden was born on January 12, 1856. Unfortunately little Sarah E. died just a few months after birth and was laid to rest in Black Oak Cemetery
just outside Vanceburg, Lewis County, Kentucky.

Black Oak Cemetery is located along Rt. 10 East of Vanceburg in the Black Oak area beside the Methodist Church. This would also seem to indicate the area
in which the James Madden family was living in 1856.
Nancy Madden became pregnant shortly after the death of her first child Sarah and on July 10, 1857 gave birth to Lucinda Alice. The Madden�s continued
farming just outside Vanceburg, surrounded by friends and relatives from Greenup County. On February 17,1860 they welcomed their third daughter Emily
into the family.

On April 2, 1862 the Madden�s household grew by one more with the birth of another daughter, Harriet A., she was to be the last child for four years.
The nation was now gripped in a mighty war of north against south and the area along the Kentucky-Ohio border was strongly pro-union. James with a
young and growing family stayed on the sidelines for a time but in August of 1864 he told his family goodbye and made the trip to Cincinnati, Ohio where
he enrolled in Company �F�, 1st Regiment of Heavy Artillery Ohio Volunteers, to serve one year. In a manner of speaking it was the beginning of the end
for James Madden.
By the first of December 1864 James and his Regiment were on a march from Flat Creek Station to Bean�s Station, in the State of Tennessee. During that
march James became ill and was diagnosed with pneumonia. According to the regiments assistant surgeon James� pneumonia assumed a chronic form
from which he never recovered sufficiently to be able to perform the ordinary duties of a soldier. He was in the Regimental Hospital at various dates
from December 1864 to June 1865. He was discharged at Knoxville, Tennessee on June 20, 1865.
Not long after James returned home he moved his family across the river from Vanceburg, Kentucky into a flat area known as Irish Bottom, Adams County,
Ohio. Nancy also became pregnant for the fifth time, for on April 23, 1866 she gave birth to another daughter that they named Lucy Bell. It was also about
this time that James consulted his family physician, W. A. Frizell, and was eventually diagnosed with pulmonary consumption.
Although James� health gradually grew worse he continued farming while his family grew by one more daughter on July 9, 1868. They named her Mary Ellen.

Telitha Jane Madden was born on August 10, 1840 to Jonathan and his second wife Elizabeth Horsley, daughter of William Horsley.
She is shown in various Federal Census records as Telitha J.,
Eliza J. and as Jane. She, like several of her siblings never had an opportunity to attend school. Jane never married and lived her
whole life with her parents and after their deaths she lived alone but within one or two houses of several of her brothers and other in-laws.
In the vernacular of the times and as stated on her death certificate she was an �old maid�. She died on January 17, 1918 at the age of 78 in
Greenup County, undoubtedly at Three Prong. Although there does not appear to be a tombstone record for her or her parents it seems
likely that they are buried together in the same cemetery. Her death certificate says she was buried in the Roiston Cemetery. This may be
the Rhoden Roister Cemetery off Three Prong in a farmer�s field under two tulip poplar trees. In the year 2000 Scott Weisman found only
three stones that were recognizable although a number of plain stones marked grave sites.
The 1850 Federal Census of Greenup County lists her as Eliza Jane, 11 years of age and born in Kentucky. She is enumerated with her parents
and siblings in the 1st district on August 1, 1850.
At the time of the 1870 Federal Census of Kentucky Telitha Jane is enumerated in the household of her father Jonathan as 29 years of age, born
in Kentucky and works at home.
At the time of the 1880 Federal Census of Kentucky Telitha J. is enumerated in the household of her father Jonathan as 40 years of age, born in
Kentucky and at home. She cannot read or write.

Mary S. Madden, wife of Samuel Seton Madden, was living with her son Albert�s family at the time of the 1930 Census of Greenup County and listed as 80
years of age. Nine years later Mary passed away on December 12, 1939 at 90 years of age. She is probably buried next to her husband at Three Prong Cemetery,
however no tombstone record exist.

Anna Smith Madden, 86, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., formerly of Leatherwood Road in Greenup County, died Friday, April 25, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Madden was born in Greenup County, a daughter of the late Lewis and Amanda Burns Smith.
She was a member of Lower Grassy Church of Christ in Grayson and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Clifford Madden, on March 4, 1991; two daughters, Phyllis Ann Madden and Virginia Huffman; a son, Clifford Nolan Madden; six brothers, Riley, George,
Thurman, Herman, Brady and Marce Smith; and five sisters, Mary Sloas, Sally Madden, Clarice Holland, Lorraine Motley and Hannah Ashe.
Mrs. Madden is survived by two daughters, Sue McBrayer and Madlyn Petrillo, both of Murfreesboro; a brother, Paul Smith, of Dearborn, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Lower Grassy Church of Christ with Larry Barrell, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Logan Cemetery in Garrison.
Friends may call at Roberson Funeral Home in South Shore from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday and at the church an hour before the service Tuesday.
Charles Clifford Madden, the son of Albert M. Madden and grandson of Samuel S. Madden, died at 7 AM on March 4, 1991 in Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio.

Virgie Brown Madden, 81, of Grove City, a former South Webster resident, died Saturday at a Columbus hospital.
A native of Greenup County, Ky., she was a member of Southwestern Church of Christ of Grove City.
Surviving are her husband, Harvey Dillard Madden; a son Dillard Mason Madden of Grove City; a foster son,
Joseph Lawhun of Lucasville; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Kathryn) Raynard of Canal Winchester,
Mrs. Ray (Lucille) Nutter of Lockbourne and Mrs. Donald (Mary) Arnold of Wheelersburg, Route 2; three brothers,
Woodrow Brown of Portsmouth, and Jarve Brown and Fred Brown; three sisters, Icy Kinker of Lucasville, Flora Hill

Isaac D. Madden is somewhat of a mystery. He is shown in the 1850 Federal Census in the household of his father Jonathan Madden.
He is shown as 9 years of age and therefore born about 1841. He was undoubtedly born at Three Prong in Greenup County. From this
point on there is no census record found for Isaac. The whole Jonathan Madden family was missed in the 1860 census of Greenup.
Isaac apparently moved to Lewis County, Kentucky sometime after 1860 but prior to his marriage to Lucy Ann Stricklett on July 12, 1866
in Lewis County. It is possible that he initially lived with one of his older siblings Matthew, James, or Martha Amanda since they all lived
in Lewis County at that time.
There is no record indicating that Isaac ever enlisted in the service during the Civil War.
Neither Isaac nor any of the members of his family are found in the 1870 or 1880 census of Lewis County although Isaac is shown in the
tax records of Lewis County during that time period. With the exception of the 1850 census records of Greenup County and the 1866
marriage record in Lewis County all of the following information on Isaac comes from the records of Marilyn S. Walters referenced
in a previous footnote.
Ms. Walters�s records indicate that Isaac D. Madden and Lucy Ann Stricklett had a total of eight children:

Lucy Ann Stricklett Madden died on March 24, 1888, just 5 months after Rosigro was born. A little less than 4 months later baby Rosigro died at 9 months of age.
In analyzing the records of Ms. Walters�s, note that an exact date of birth is given for every child and an exact date of death is also given for every child except
Flora. There is also an exact date of death for Isaac and Lucy Ann but not for their dates of birth. This would seem to indicate that the information comes from
a bible or family record put together by one of the children, possibly Verinda since this is the only child with an exact �place of birth�. If it were from a bible
record started by Isaac and Lucy it would probably have included their dates of birth but if put together after their deaths it is possible that their children
might not have known the exact date of birth for their parents.
There is some circumstantial evidence that Isaac D. Madden may have resided in the general vicinity of Martin Community from before the time of his
marriage. Martin is located just to the northwest of Vanceburg on Martin Creek. There is a small branch that runs into Martin Creek called Stricklet
Branch. It seems likely that the branch got its name from Lucy�s family who probably lived in that area. Verinda Jane Madden Kennedy�s death certificate
indicates that she had lived in the same area all her life.

The Madden family has not been located in the 1880 Federal Census of Lewis County.
His mother died just a week after his 9th birthday.
After their father�s death in 1896 the four remaining children; Samuel, John, Verinda and Flora remained together as a family unit.
After Verinda�s marriage to Oscar Kennedy in 1899 the three remaining children including John continued to live together and are

In the 1910 Federal Census of Illinois John M. Madden and his wife Goldie E. are living in Vance Township, Vermilion County, Illinois.
He is 31 and she is 18, they have been married one month.
In the 1920 Federal Census of Mason County, Kentucky John M. Madden and his wife Golda are living back in Mason County in the
Dietrich Precinct. John is 41, a laborer and cannot read or write.
They have 4 children, all born in Illinois; Opal L. who is 7, Loyd W. who is 5, Johny H. who is 4 5/12 and Dorthy M. who is 1 11/12.
All of the children were born in Illinois. They also have Annie Walker, a cousin, who is 17 and born in Kentucky living with them.
In the 1930 Census of Mason County, Kentucky John M. Madden, a widower, age 51 is living on Clark Street in Maysville, Kentucky
with two of his sons; Floyd W. who is 15 and John H. who is 14. He and Floyd are working at odd jobs and John is working in a tobacco factory.
It appears that John remarried sometime after 1930 as his son refers to him as married to Elizabeth age 50 on his death certificate.
John Marion Madden died on January 18, 1941 in the Hayswood Hospital in Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky. His cause of death was cancer of the intestine.

Isaac Madden and Lucy Ann Stricklett. Concord is just a short distance from Martin and the area where he apparently grew up.

Verinda Jane Madden the 8th child of Isaac D. Madden and Lucy Ann Stricklett was born on April 21, 1883 Lewis County, Kentucky.
She was probably born in or near Martin Community just northwest of Vanceburg. She was only 5 years old when her mother and baby
brother passed away. Since there is no record indicating that her father remarried it is probable that her 11 year old sister Flora took
over many of the responsibilities of caring for Jane.
On August 18, 1899 Jane married Oscar Kennedy in Lewis County. She was 4 months past her 16th birthday and had probably been living
with one of her older siblings since her father Isaac�s death on May 14, 1996.
Oscar and Jane remained in the Martin area the remainder of their lives and reared a family of seven children to maturity. The census
records of 1910, 1920 and 1930 all record Oscar�s occupation as �farmer�.

Mrs. Jane Madden Kennedy, 77, wife of Oscar Kennedy, a retired Lewis County farmer, died at 9:30 Sunday night at the home of a son and daughter-in-law, Mr. & Mrs.
William Kennedy of Martin Fork of Quick's Run. Mrs. Kennedy leaves 70 descendants.
Ill for the past 4 years, Mrs. Kennedy suffered the last of three strokes Wednesday of last week. She had not been well for a number of years. She was born April 21, all
who knew her for her many kindnesses and considerations despite her years of ill health.
Surviving in addition to her husband and son at whose home she died are one other son, Earl Kennedy of Rt. 5 Vanceburg; five daughters, Mrs. Ethel Gasaway of West Union, OH,
Mrs. Mae Himes of Concord, KY, Mrs. Beatrice Himes of Hillsboro, KY ; Mrs. Pearl Walker of Trinity and Mrs. Esther Walker of Trinity. Also she leaves 29 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Aill�s Christian Church with the Rev. Fred Calvert, of Tollesboro, officiating. Burial was in the Aill�s cemetery,
under the direction of Dickerson Funeral Home.
Slightly over four years later Oscar passed away. Oscar and Jane�s son Thomas Earl Kennedy had passed away the previous year.
OSCAR KENNEDY DIES AFTER YEAR'S ILLNESS
Oscar Kennedy, 91, retired farmer of Lewis County, died at 8:50 a.m. August 19th, following an illness of one year. Mr. Kennedy died at the home of his son, William Kennedy, of Rt. 5 Vanceburg.
Death was attributed to complications incident of age.
The deceased was born March 23....in Manchester Ohio, son of the late Richard and Lorainne Hughes Kennedy and was a member of Pine Grove Christian Church, Concord, and was active in
all its affairs until his health began failing.
Sine the death of his wife, the former Jane Madden, in January 1960, he has been residing with his son.
Mr. Kennedy, whose keen sense of humor and alert mind even to the last endeared him to many, will be remembered by all who held him in such high esteem.
Survivors besides the one with whom he resided are 5 daughters; Mrs. Mae Himes, Mrs. Charles Walker, and Mrs. Luther Walker, all of Concord, Mrs. Beatrice Himes of Ripley and Mrs.
Ethel Gasaway of West Union, OH; 30 grandchildren, 4-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Aill�s Christian Church, Vanceburg with the Rev. Walter Gilpin ,pastor of Martin Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Aill's Cemetery.

Jonathan Madden, the last known child of Jonathan Madden and his second wife Elizabeth Madden was born when his father was 49 years of age and
his mother was 40 years of age. He was almost a Christmas baby coming into the world on December 19, 1855. He was undoubtedly born at home on
Three Prong. The Vital Records of Greenup County, Kentucky record his birth as follows:

Since this Madden family was missed in the 1860 Federal Census of Greenup County the first definite record we have of Jonathan, after his birth record,
is the 1870 Federal Census of Greenup in which he is enumerated in his fathers family as 14 (1856) years of age and working on a farm, presumably his fathers.
He was certainly old enough to be aware of the impact of the Civil War in his area of the country during the early and mid 1860�s.
By the time of the 1870 Federal Census Jonathan had received some education and can read but cannot write. Later census records indicate that he can both
read and write. In fact none of the children in the family are attending school in 1870. There is apparently a school in the area since several families in the
immediate vicinity have children �attending school�. Since the 1870 census indicates that Jonathan�s mother Elizabeth can read and write it is possible that
he received his basic education at home.
At the time of the 1870 Federal Census Jonathan would probably not have believed it but his future wife Nancy A. Dummitt was just 4 years old and living
just a family away from the Maddens. Jonathan is enumerated as 14 years of age, born in Kentucky and works on farm.

Slightly less than 9 years later Jonathan Madden, the youngest child of Jonathan Madden and Elizabeth Madden, was laid to rest in Horsley Cemetery in
Greenup County, Kentucky. He died on April 3, 1919. Only two of his siblings were still living at the time of his death; David R. and King Hiram.
Although at times he may have lived for short periods in Lewis County, it appears that he spent his whole life in the vicinity of Three Prong, Greenup
County, Kentucky.

According to GREENUP COUNTY KENTUCKY MARRIAGES 1904-1920 ON USGenWeb Talitha Madden 24 years of age married Charles VanBibber 50
years of age on November 17, 1918. The Social Security Death Index states that Telitha Vanbibber , born February 14, 1893 died in May of 1974 and that
her last residence was Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio. It further states that her SS Card was issued in Ohio. Ohio Deaths 1958 to 2000 found on Ancestry.com
states that Telitha J. Vanbibber died on May 12, 1974 at about 82 years of age. Her county of death is given as Scioto County, Ohio.
