John Hunt

John Hunt Sr. b. 1 Feb 1628 in Warwickshire Co.,Stratford-upon- Avon,England. d. in Charles Co., MD.

Together with the family of Edward Tipton from Staffordshire England, John and Elizabeth and son John sailed from Liverpool on the "Friendship of England." They stopped at Barbados and Kingston, Jamaica ....before arriving at Maryland in 1668. The ship sailed up the Potomac River to near Port Tobacco, MD. The captain of the ship was Christopher Miller, married Elizabeth (unk) in 1652 in England; son John Hunt Jr.

John served in the VA Militia under Col. John Tipton, 1775. He went to Sullivan CO, TN about 1783 and to Bourbon CO, KY ca. 1790. John

probably lived for a time near present-day Kingsport, TN. John settled on land in Bourbon Co., Ky.,

later to find out that through an error or fraud that it was part of a MIlitary Survey for a Mr. Wright; and in the suit that followed,

he lost his rights and moved to Fleming County where he died a broken hearted man in 1808.

On th e30th of October, 1810, the heirs of John filed suit and received a judgement in the case, but the damage had already been done. An in-depth account of some of John Hunt's history by Mrs. Herbert E. Brown may be found in the National Archives

and in the State Library of Indiana.

| Will of Reuben Hunt, Sr. Written: 10 July 1822 Probated: January Court, 1826

| In the name of God, Amen I Reuben Hunt Sr. being frail in body and much afflicted yet in my perfect senses do make this my last will and | testament. And first it is my will and desire and I do will the tract of land on which I now

| live together with singular and all its appertinances to my

| wife Nancy Hunt and also all the goods and chattels live stock and all the property on estate of any kind

| what so ever to me in any wise belonging

| to her my said wife to have and to hold and exercise full ownership over without rent or

| other charge during her natural life except so much of the

| aforesaid tract of land as lies within the following bounds to wit:

| Beginning where buck creek now runs against the hill above where Thatcher Hiet

| now lives there south course to my line thence with said line to the beginning of my tract of land

| thence with my line to buck creek thence with

| said creek to the upper end of the little bottom in which he (Thatcher Hiet) has cleared some

| ground to the beginning which boundary I will to the

| said Thatcher Hiet at the death of my aforesaid wife I wish the said Hiet to have the

| bend of the aforesaid parcel of ground from the present time so

| long as he thinks fit to live there on but to have no power to sell rent lease or other

| way dis of said ground until the death of my said wife except to

| her and at the death of my wife Nancy Hunt I wish and do here by will the residue of my land to

| my two youngest sons to wit: Joseph D. Hunt and

| William S. Hunt to be equally divided between them the said Joseph D. Hunt and William S. Hunt

| and the personal estate goes to my wife to be

| divided at the discretion of my said wife between my three daughters to wit: Pheba Nancy and Elizabeth and if my said wife dies before | distributing said personal estate between the aforesaid three daughters then in that case it is

| my wissh that the aforesaid personal estate be equally

| divided among my aforesaid three daughters and where as I formerly gave to my son Jeremiah Hunt

| fifty acres of land worth at least fifty dollars

| also to Reuben Hunt my son I gave the occupancy of one house and seven acres of cleared land for

| seven years at fifty dollars also I gave one year

| of his time and paid him for his crop and gave him hogs into the amount of fifty dollars also I gave to

| Samuel Hunt my son one mare one cow and

| calf one bed and furniture to the value of fifty dollars also I have Hester Hiet one horse worth twenty five dollars also I gave to my daughter | Rebecca Rice one bed and furniture and other things to the amount of what I had gave to aforesaid distributees and to my daughter Polly now | married to Anthony Matthews I will the use and benefit of the ground lying above my upper string of

| fence on buck creek to til for the term of

| seven years after the first day of next January 1823 to gether with other things to the amount of fifty dollars

| and in consideration of the above

| distribution among my children already married and left me and wishing

| to make an equal distribution to all of my children and being convinced

| that them to whome I have already given will have their equal share with them to whome I have willed

This account also states Mary died 4-4-1843 near Hagerstown Wayne Co. Indiana but buried in Huntsville Cemetery in Randolph Co. Ind.

John Tipton Hunt was called "colonel" because he fought in the home guard during the War of 1812 according to family tradition. He raised

his family on the banks of the Licking River in Fleming CO, KY. He was named after John Tipton who was a friend of his father's.

Polly told her children that as a small child she remembered Daniel Boone visiting their home and staying overnight with them in the Ky. wilderness. Her obituary confirmed that they had 10 sons and 5 daughters.

| From the Fleming CO, KY Gazette, 11 July 1974: "Basil Hunt, an early Methodist preacher, owned a large farm near Hillsboro | and was an extensive wheat raiser, employing many hands in reaping its harvest. He was also involved in Hillsboro business. In | 1836 it was his brick building which housed the dry goods and grocery store." "Sometime after 1838 the Hillsboro Library | Company was organized. The entrance fee was $5 which gave the member the right to one book at a time. There were about 40 | members. The library was kept in the back room of Pickrell's store (started by William Basil Hunt) & Rev. William Basil was | the librarian." During the 1830s William Basil bought more than a thousand acres of land in West River and Nettle Creek | Townships of Randolph CO, IN. He continued living in Fleming Co, KY until 1855 when he moved to Indiana. By that time | most of his children had already moved to Randolph CO. When he died in 1869 he left an estate of $30,000, a sizable amount | for that time.

In communicating with Bobby, a cousin, we have come upon some mysteries that have | | | us stumped. On the 1880 Census of Fleming Co KY, in ADD HUnt's household, appears and | | | Isabell TINSLEY, age 12, and stating that she is adopted. My mother, who is a granddaughter of | | | Seth Alonzo HUNT, claims she never heard of her. My cousin, who is a granddaughter of Ethel | | | Linda HUNT, hasn't either. Any clues? I have searched the 1870 Censuses of Fleming anad | | | surrounding counties looking for a TINSLEY family looking for her birth family. And

| | | since the 1890 Census isn't available, it's a mystery about where she came from, and where she | | | went.The other mystery is about Matilda HUNT. I have the original Bible pages from ADD & | | | Malinda DAILEY HUNT. This name doesn't appear on their list of children. But I discovered | | | her living with Seth Alonzo And Ellen CONDON HUNT on the 1920 Hillsboro Pct., FLeming | | | CO KY Census living in his household as a 'sister'. Looking back to 1900, she appears again in | | | Magistrate DIst. #5 (FOx Creek) as age 51, single, Zero years married, and two sons also- Elmer | | | (b. abt. 1882 KY) and Russel (b. abt. 1888 KY). The only clue I have is on the Bible pages, a | | | child is listed as Maria M. HUNT. Could Matilda be Maria's middle name? I have yet to find her | | | on the 1910 Census of that general area. Also, was she ever married? Bobby doesn't have any | | | record of her marriage, at least not in Fleming County. And I haven't found a hint of her until | | | these censuses.I will be more than happy to send you the copies of the Bible pages if you would | | | like, via e-mail, and what photos I have of tombstones. Plaintiff States that the defendant by the Indenture of apprenticeship (a Copy of which will in due time be filed as part hereof marked "A.") Covenanted as therein Stipulated. and although he labored and Served the Said defendant the full period he was bound _to labor_ for defendant. Yet the defendant did not on plaintiff arriving at the age of 21 years pay him Said L3-105 equal to $11.66 2/3 nor furnish him the Said clothes which should have been worth equal to $50.00 And he failed & refused to, and did not Send Plaintiff to school at all [the words at all are crossed out or underlined] for learn or Cause him to be taught to _read_, _or_ _write_, or to the Single rule of three in Arithmetic which alone. for want of the education has injured him and thereby damaged him to the amount of $1000. -- In all he has thus, by said _failure_ of defendant to perform his Covenant, been damaged at least $1066.66 2/3. and which defendant refuses to pay or Satisfy

Fleming Circuit Court Sct Saml Hunt Plaintiff vs } Answer Isaac Sapp Defendant

The defendant Isaac Sapp for answer to plaintiffs petition States that the plaintiff ought not to have and maintain his said petition because he States that it is not True that the plaintiff Served and Labored for the defendant the full period for which he was bound and for which he was apprenticed to this Defendant. And for further answer the Defendant says that by an order of the Fleming County court made at the March Term 1841 that the plaintiff was apprenticed and bound to the Defendant for the period of eight years from and after October 1841 or untill the plaintiff should attain to the age of Twenty one years. and the Defendant States that the plaintiff left and runaway from the defendant in the summer of 1845. More than three years before the experation of the time or before he had attained the age of Twenty one years and the defendant States that during the time the plaintiff Continued with the Defendant that he this defendant did ruele? and Truely teach the plaintiff the art and mystery of farming. and did constantly find the plaintiff in neat lodging and wearing apparell fit for an apprentice to have. and did- Send him to School and cause him to be learned to read and write. and So long as the plaintiff served with the Defendant this Defendant in all things keeped and performed his said Covenant. and in so far as he may have failed it was produced by the Conduct of the plaintiff in breaking the covenant on his part.

And for further answer the Defendant States that the plaintiff ought not to have and maintain his petition because the plaintiff did not keep and perform his covenant of indenture and by means of the plaintiff running of f and absconding from the Service of the Defendant the defendant was prevented from fully and in every? particular performing the law on his part. Wherefore he -?- plaintiffs petition he -?- with costs and for all proper relief.

Hunt vs Agreement Sapp Filed 7th April 1854

An article of an agreement made and entered into this Apl. 7th 1854 by and between Isaac Sapp of the county of Fleming and state of Ky. of the one part & Samuel Hunt of said county & State of the other. Witnesseth the said parties have a suit now pending in the Fleming circuit court to the effect that the said Hunt originally was a bound boy to the said Sapp. & he having failed to give him such an education as the law required in such cases has sued for the same in said court Now it is under stood by the parties that the suit is to be dismissed- by the said Hunt in consequence of the payment of Forty seven dollars & 50 cts by the said Sapp. to be paid in money-the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged & the said Sapp is to release the said Hunt from all accounts he may be owing him up to this time. It is further under stood that each party pays their own costs. given under our Hands-- his Isaac X Sapp mark

March Term 1841 pg. 91 I. Sap Plff Against } on a motion to have her child Sam'l Hunt bound out Patsy Hunt Deft. This day came the parties by attornies and the court having heard the cause and duly

considered thereof, It is ordered that the said Child be rebound out according to Law.

Ordered that the clerk of this court bind Samuel Hunt to Isaac Sap for the term of Eight Years from the [left blank] of October next or till he arrives at the age of 21 years to learn the art and mystery of Farming. An Indenture to that effect was signed sealed and acknowledged in open court by the parties & ordered to be recorded

Know all men by these Presents that Jeremiah Hunt Jeremiah Jackson & Hugh Alexander are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Ky. in the Just and full sum of five hundred pounds which payment will and truly to be made we Bind Ourselves our heirs &c Jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed and dated this 14th day of October 1822 The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bound Jeremiah Hunt of the separat Methodist Society has this day obtained leave of the County Court of Bath County to celebrate the rites of Matrimony within this commonwealth f? thereon the said Jeremiah Hunt shall well and truly d-?- him self in the performance of the said trust agreeably to an act of Assembly entitled an Act to regulate the -?-ization of marriages Then this obligation to be void else to remain in full force and virtue

John Hunt Jr. b. in 1653 in Warwickshire CO, England. d. in 1701 in Port Tobacco, MD.

At the age of 15 John came to Maryland with his parents in 1668 along with the Edward Tipton family. By age 16 he had his own land and was planting tobacco. He was a planter and member of St. Johns Episcopal Church. Two of his sons went to Maryland; one to New York; another to South Carolina, but Joseph remained in Virginia.
