The following is from microfilm records of Elliott Co Ky Vital Stats; and the microfilm record is pretty clear: Joseph Deboard born Elliott Co KY age 84 married, d 22
April 1878 in Elliott of old age and weakness, parents Jesse and Francis Deboard both born Surry Co NC. Note by HLD: The census records are fairly consistent that
Joseph was born before 1790; he was married and had a daughter by 1810 and he was witness to a land deed in 1807. So in 1878, Joseph would have been at least 88 yrs
old and probably 90 yrs old. I have not found any record of Joseph after the 1860 Lawrence Co census. So I believe this death record refers to Jeptha Debord ca 1800. The
next entry on the Elliott Co vital stats shows John T. Debord age 18 months son of Joseph and Martha J. Deboard. This 2nd Joseph is almost certainly Jeptha Jr b 1850;
so maybe the 1st record is for Jeptha Sr. But there's problems with this as well. Jeptha would have been about 78 to 80 yrs old in 1878 and I don't believe Jesse was his
father. The last record I have for Jeptha Debord is the 1875 Elliott Co tax records; so I'm convinced that Jeptha died in Elliott Co between 1875 and 1880.

| | circumstances. He did not like the name Joel Francis and was always known as Dick. Dick left home in his late teens and did not have much, if
| | any, contact with his family until his later years. I do not believe Dick was ever married. I believe he spent most of his life as a farm laborer on a
| | farm near Whitesburg KY.

| Obituary: An unusual accident and a self-inflicted shotgun blast brought death to a Carter County, KY. son and his father on
| Wednesday. When Billy Ray Debord failed to return home Wednesday evening, his wife, Mrs. Mary Lou Easterling, notified
| neighbors and a search ensued. Debord, 33, was engaged in felling timber on his farm on Ben's Run section, and two of the
| searchers, Ernest Greenhill and Jay Dehart found his lifeless body where it lay in the woodland. Carter County Coroner John Back,
| called to the scene, said that Debord had felled a tree, which in falling, struck another tree causing the latter to fall on young Debord,
| fracturing his skull. The Coroner also said that Debord had been dead about six hours when found at 9:30 p.m. Greenhill and Fred
| Evans Jr., went to the home of Billy Ray's parents, who also live on Ben's Run, to notify them of their son's death. As they entered
| the driveway at the Frank Debord home they heard a shotgun blast. Frank Debord, 67, and who had been in ill health for several
| years, and not knowing that a search was being made for his son, died instantly of a shotgun wound in the chest, said Coroner Back.
| Billy Ray Debord is survivied by his wife, three daughters: Alice Joy, Linda Joyce, and Kathy Mae, all at home; three brothers,
| Ewell and Bob Debord of Dayton, Ohio; and Roger Debord of Cincinnati; six sisters, Mrs. Betty Lawless, Mrs. Virginia Plumbitt,
| Mrs. Vivian Rice and Mrs. Shirley Gordon, all of Dayton; Mrs. Sue Whitt and Mrs. Jonda Whitt, both of Alliance, Ohio. The body
| is at the Stucky, Back, and Cline Funeral Home, and will be taken to the residence at 10 o'clock Friday morning. Funeral
| arrangements have not been completed. The body of the father, Frank Debord is at the Leslie A. Henderson Funeral Home, and
| funeral arrangements are incomplete. Mr. Debord was born Sept. 13, 1897, in Elliott Co. KY, a son of the late Jessie and Sara
| Parsons Debord. Surviving are his wife, Gladys Tabor Debord of Olive Hill; six daughters, Mrs. Betty Lawless, Mrs. Virginia
| Plunckett, Mrs. Vivian Rice, and Mrs. Phyllis Gordon, all of Dayton,O., Mrs. Wanda Whitt and Mrs. Jonda Whitt, both of Alliance,
| Ohio; three sons, Eual Debord of Dayton, Bob Debord of Cincinnati and Roger Debord at home; three sisters, Mrs. Rosa Branham
| and Mrs. Lucy Carroll, both of Olive Hill, and Mrs. Bertha Carroll of Grahn; a half-sister, Mrs. Vivian Springer of Detroit, Mich.,
| and 15 grandchildren.

| | younger". Comment by half-brother Chester: "I never saw Willis angry, the only time I saw him mad was when his mule got loose and into the
| | neighbors pasture. The neighbor told Willis to get his mule out of there and Willis said: "If I had an old pine knot from Wisconsin, I'd beat that
| | mule". It is interesting to note that his future father-in-law, Milza Jones who was from the same general area in Ky., had already moved his
| | family to Wisconsin, and the Jones and DeBords became neighbors there. It may, have been Milza who encouraged Willis to move there in the
| | first place. They were friends and corresponded before Willis ever met Milza's daughter, Grace, who was to be Willis' future wife. He wasn't in
| | the Army because of bad hearing. He taught school in a one-room schoolhouse, called the Old House Creek School, in Ky., which had
| | eight grades. His favorite Aunt, was Nancy Jane, wife of Uncle Bill Scaggs. Mary DeBord said that when she and Willis would go to visit, his
| | aunt would say, "slice that ham right out of the middle . . . nothin's too good for Willis." Willis was well thought of according to his brother-in-law,
| | John Milton Jones, (Milza's brother). Willis married in 1920 at the age of 32, to Grace Jones, the daughter of Milza Jones and Emma Jane Ross.
| | Willis and Grace went in a horse and buggy to be married by a Justice Of The Peace and the buggy almost upset on the way as they were crossing
| | a creek. They lived in Ky. for awhile, where their first child, a son Frederick Eugene, was born, and then moved to Brownsville, PA, where
| | Willis worked as a coal miner in the mines and really liked it. Once he got started in that, he didn't want to do anything else. While they lived
| | there, Grace ran a boarding house and cooked for coal miners in the settlement. Their second child, a daughter Fayetta, was born there in House
| | #10, Newtown, the coal mining settlement in South Brownsville. Their third child, Marcella, was born in the Hales Creek, KY. cabin, where
| | Grace's mother and father lived. Then Grace and Willis moved back to Brownsville where their next two children, Gladys and Ralph, were born;
| | then back to South Webster, Ohio where Dorothy was born; back to Brownsville, PA, where Howard and Ruth were born, and finally to Penn-
| | Craft where their youngest, Russell, was born. Penn-Craft was settled by Philadelphia Quakers and the American Friends Service formed a
| | cooperative home-building group there. The families shared their labor and constructed their house as well as others in the community.
