Stegall One installment in a series of articles Mr. Stegall publishes in The Elliot County News, this article first appearing in the March 15, 1996 edition of said paper and a continuation from February 23, 1996. Transcribed with permission from Mr. Stegall by Samone Ratcliff on March 29, 2000. "John Carpenter: It seems apparent that this veteran fought or taker no rank, company or unit that he served in. He made no mention of the length of time he served, neither did he relate any information regarding battle injuries or current ailments. The only information he gave was his post office, which was Limestone. With his address being Limestone, it would seem almost certain that John Carpenter lived in the Sinking area of Elliot Co., and indeed, the 1870 census names such an inhabitant in that area. If this is the veteran, John Carpenter, he was 32 years of age in 1870, which would have certainly made him a sufficient age to have served in the Civil War. His wife, Mary, was 34 years of age, with the following children: Emily, 15; Harrison,, 13; Henderson, 10; Peter, 8; Malinda,; William, 5; and Kelsa (David(), 2. The 1880 census also listsl John Carpenter as a resident of Elliot Co. and more specifically, living in the Moccasin Precinct. There is undoubtedly an error in ages of John and Mary in the 1880 census. John is listed as being 35; Mary is 34, almost the same identical ages given in 1870. I believe there could have been an error in transcribing this information, from the original copy of the 1880 census. Children named in the 1880 census: Henderson, 20; Peter, 18; Malinda, 17; Wm. B., 15; Sarah, 13; Amanda, 8; Kels, 11; and Adam, 9. (Harrison, the oldest child named in 1870, has established his own homestead and was named in the 1880 census.) When the 1890 Elliot Co. Tax Assessments were being prepared, John Carpenter was listed as a resident of the Moccasin Precinct, and owning 100 acres. All of his property was valued at $591. John stated in 1900 that he was 65 years of age, having been born in March 1835. The census record indicates that he was a widower, but it also mentions that he had a Mary, age 13 (born in Aug. 1886) as his "Wife", and that they had been married less than one year. I get the feeling that this might be an error on the part of the census taker. In 1910, John Carpenter was living in the home of a son-in-law, William Sexton, who had married Amanda Carpenter. John stated that he was 68, and a widower. Again, we see the inconsistency that had been prevalent in John' age record. I have no date of death or place of burial for John Carpenter. In the 1910 Elliot County Census, a William Carroll listed as living in the Sinking Precinct with David (Kelsa) and Harrison Carpenter as his nearest neighbors.
