NEWPORT NEWS

FUNERAL OF CAPTAIN AIR-The remains of the late Captain Robert Air, were followed to their final resting place, in the Newport Cemetery, yesterday by a large number of grief stricken friends.

******************************************************

Robert Air had been well known in this city and Newport for the last thirty years. He was as unostentatious in character as he was kind, sociable and agreeable in society. The history of his presence here is brief and simple.  He came to Newport about thirty years ago; engaged in farming; married Mary Downard, who survives him and afterward engaged in business in Cincinnati, and in 1840 leased the Newport Ferry, since which time his career and character for benevolence of heart and real charity in acts has been familiar to many and can be attested to by hundreds. He was upright in all things; sought no advantage, would offer hope.

In perfect consistent with good, he lived; and in his death wiped out the small frailties of a useful life. Robert Air was an honest and useful citizen, patriotic and loyal. "We miss him at home." His kind and genial manner in performing every public act is weel known and will come readily to the minds of all who knew him.

But, unpretending, sociable, charitable and kind, he has passed to the realm well known to man. The useful citizen here may emulate the highest virtue there.  L let us believe that our friend with realize the beautiful words of the post in his experience in the Heavenly work; and also let us indulge in the pleasing hope that we are right in that belief.
