MYSTERIOUS BURIAL

Cincinnati Enquirer, Sep 29, 1882, page 4

A report reached Newport yesterday of the mysterious burial of a beautiful young lady at Persimmon Grove, back of Newport, some two weeks since.  Two young men, dressed in the height of fashion, applied to the sexton of the cemetery and asked permission to bury a body.  The sexton  inquired of them if they or the deceased had any relatives in the cemetery.  They informed the sexton that the deceased had no relatives in this part of the country, but that she died from home in a Cincinnati hospital.  The two men then purchased a lot in the cemetery for a ?  sum, and paid the sexton for his work.  On the following day after the above transaction the body arrived in a light spring wagon, neatly incased in a casket.  The sexton opened the coffin when it arrived and found the dead body of a most beautiful young lady gorgeously dressed, who had apparently been dead about three days.  There is something very mysterious about this.

MRS. RITTER STILL MISSING

Cincinnati Enquirer, Nov 15, 1882, page 4

The mysterious interment of a corpse in a grave yard at Persimmon Grove, Campbell Co Ky. caused the sister of Mrs. Ritter, who resided at 58 Budd street and who has been missing from her home since September 8th last, to investigate the matter with a view of finding her lost sister. Last Monday afternoon Mrs. Ritter and a lady friend repaired to the grave-yard and had the sexton exhume the corpse, which upon examination proved to be the body of Mrs. Benjamin Carney, who died in the Covington hospital of asthma, and whose husband is confined in the same place with sickness.  A brother and Mrs. Carney took charge of her burial but did not reach the graveyard until late at night. The burial was made in the usual manner.  The missing sister returned to this city very sad and disappointed, but not before, however, giving the corpse a very thorough inspection.  Thus the disappearance of Mrs. Ritter is still wrapped in mystery.
