A Newport Volunteer for the Union

The following story was found on page 3 of The Cincinnati Daily Enquire for December 23, 1863.

Frank Joseph Meyer, a German, who resides in Newport, went before the Mayor of Covington a few days ago and obtained his full naturalization papers.  Having come to this county when he was under 18 year of age, it was only necessary for him to take out one paper.  After the Oath of Allegiance had been administered to him the Mayor handed over the naturalization paper, remarking to him that he was now a citizen of the United States; whereupon the stalwart German exclaimed "Goot! I goes now unt joins the heavy artillery.  I likes not the draft."  Meyer is a noble specimen of a man being full six feet in height.
