John and Rachel Crail

John Crail was born about 1770 in Pennsylvania, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth. He was in Mason County in 1792 with his brother, Wilson. In 1799 he was listed in Pendleton Co and on Dec 3 he applied for a tavern license. He married Rachel Stephens, daughter of Lewis Stephens, 25 Oct 1799 in Pendleton Co. She did not live long possibly dying in childbirth with their second child.

He married Sarah Webb in Campbell Co 11 Apr 1802.

John appeared in the 21st Regiment of the "Cornstalk Militia" May 31, 1800 out of Campbell County and appears again on the Pendleton Co census for 1800 and the tax lists of 1800 and 1804. He appeared on the delinquent tax payers list on Feb 3 1801 and again in Oct 7 with his brother, Wilson.

In 1805 John and Sarah were in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he placed a newspaper notice in which he advertised for an apprentice to the saddle tree making trade. On Dec 6, 1805, Charles Vattier sold John land in Hamilton Co.

In 1809, John's father, Thomas died in Pendleton Co. He received only one dollar from the estate, "unless he returned power of attorney and deed for 336 acres of land" near Chillicothe, Ohio.

In the Liberty Hall newspaper of Hamilton Co Oh, it is noted that on June 13, 1810, Johns wife, Sallie had "left his bed and board." He was also on the Campbell Co census for that year in Newport.

He was in Campbell Co tax list in 1813, 1814 and in 1815. In the Hamilton Co Common Pleas court, on Mar 10, 1817, Thomas Moore was appointed guardian of Edward Crail, aged 12. On Nov 2, 1819, John and Sarah’s daughter Lucinda, "with consent of mother Sarah Moore, apprenticed herself to Thomas and Ann McGregor on Newport until Nov 22, 1832 when she would be 18." She was apprenticed as a seamstress.

In 1827 Sarah Crail died and her son in law, Edward Gallagan produced an account to the Campbell Co court for "keeping her (Sarah) while sick, $6.00, coffin $3.00, shroud $2.37 and digging grave $1.00.

1. Daniel Crail b-1801 in Pendleton Co. m-Mary Ann Stephens, daughter of John Stephens and Fanny Lancaster. He was raised by his uncle, Lewis Stephens.
