Of Campbell County Died in Newport Yesterday
Gustavus Artsman, one of Campbell County's most widely known and respected citizens, died yesterday at his late residence, 16 West Front street, Newport, of Bright's disease. He had been in ill health for some time and his death was not unexpected.
He was born in Gera, Germany, October 6, 1829, and came to American when a boy of 16 years. He settled at Alexandria, the county seat of Campbell County, in 1854 and married Miss Sarah Brooks the next year. As a result of that union three children, Mrs. H Buchanan Jr. Mrs. J W Dennison and Mrs. W P Dickerson were born. In 1856 he was elected Circuit Clerk of Campbell Cunty on the Democratic ticket and served until 1863, when he resigned to become Major of the Twenty-third Kentucky Volunteer Infantry.
He served in various capacities in the army unitl 1866, when he resigned to resume the practice of law. In 1872 he was appointed Master Commissioner of Campbell County and served continuously in that capacity until 1892. During this service he had the reputation of being the most efficient Master Commissioner in the state, for he had the entire settlement of some noted failures, among them the Guilfoyle Swift's Iron and Steel Works, Banderman and others.
For several years he was a vestryman in St Paul's P E Church and he was a member of the Loyal Legion and the Masons. he was well known and respected in Newport, where he had made his home for many years.
The funeral will take place tomorrow at 2 pm services being held at the family residence. Rev Dr. R L Harris, pastor of St Paul's Church, officiating. The active pall bearers will be Messrs. J W Shanks, T P Carothers, A T Root, Sam Bigstaff, J C Shroll, F A Buchana, W C Botts and L J Crawford. The honorary pall bearers will be Messrs. R H Stone, of Cincinnati, E W Hawkins, John B Taylor, C J Helm, L R Hawthorne, A L Berry and F P Helm.
