Mary Donnelly Hamilton wrote a note about her grandfather Edward Donnelly.  "Here is all I know about Grandpa Donnelly born 1812 to 1818 assuming he was in his early forties when he died.  He married in 1847 and died 27 Feb 1859 (sic) on 6th Street between Broadway and Sycamore.  There was another Donnelly in the block but they were not related.  He was from Philadelphia in the wholesale dry goods business with his uncle Gallagher at Stewart & Co; had a brother Thomas and I believe a sister Agnes.  Uncle Phil's name was Philip Gallagher Donnelly.  I remember stories vaguely that Agnes was the wife of the Chief Justice Of Ohio who would bring a nun with her when she visited Cincinnati-ostensibly for company but actually to irritate her protestant relatives."

Joseph Lawrence Donnelly wrote this about his grandfather Edward.  "My father Edward Lewis Donnelly said that our grandfather Edward Donnelly was born in the city of Donegal, County Donegal, Ireland.  He also said that some member of the family was taken under the wing of the Bishop for education.  The Bishop sent the fellow to Dublin and then to Belgium, to Louvan and finally ordered him to return for consecration to the priesthood.  The rascal met this by writing that he did not find himself holy enough for the priesthood.  Father intimated that the family left Ireland under a cloud.  At any rate when I visited Donegal in 1960 I could find no trace of any Donnelly either in the city or the county records.  Nobody admitted that there had ever been a Donnelly there-abouts.  Could the Bishop's curse still be in effect?

A few years ago I met a Dr. Edward Donnelly from Philadelphia whose grandfather Edward Donnelly came from the County Donegal about 1835-40 to settle in Philadelphia.  I was sure we were cousins but Dr. Edw. Donnelly died before we could get very far in our researches."
