David and Sarah Downard

David Downard was born 4 May 1778 in Uniontown, Fayette Co, Pennsylvania the son of William Downard and Mary McCarty. He married the widow of James Smith, Sarah Thompson Smith in 1807 and opened a brewery in Newport in 1809.  Sarah and James Smith had opened the first brewery in Newport in 1798 and apparently had done business with the Downard family.  James Smith died by May of 1807 when his estate was probated and by October of 1807 David and Sarah were married. Sarah was born 1784 in Pennsylvania.
