It seems a bit isolated for a cemetery but there is a sad but heartwarming story behind this family graveyard.  John (son of Nicholas) and Mary (York) Cherry married March 11, 1827, built a home together fully intending to live out their days, watch their children grow and give them grandchildren.

In the 1850 census John is listed with his wife, Mary and the following children; James, Elisabeth, Jerry, Rachel, Nancy, Mary, Nicholas, and Jasper/Jesse. In 1851 an illness struck this family and several family members died.  The neighbors were so fearful of whatever it was they died of, that they burned the house and all its possessions.  John survived and moved his remaining children to Alexandria, where they are found in the 1860 census. The story goes that Daniel Thatcher buried the family in this small graveyard and over the years the neighbors have maintained it well.

When taking the photos of this site, Jeff found a piece of blue glass that looked as if it had melted.  It is now on display at the Campbell County Historical Society Museum.
