Dr. Bernard W and Eleanor Southgate

Dr. Bernard Southgate was born in Richmond, Virginia about 1828,
the son of George Maris Southgate and Elizabeth Bernard. His family came
to Covington in 1830 but later moved to Nashville, Tennessee where Bernard
studied medicine and surgery.
Richard
Southgate was his father's half-brother so Bernard came
to Northern Kentucky to start his practice. He settled in Walton in Boone
County and on March 20, 1856 in Covington he married Eleanor Fleming born 1833
in Cincinnati Ohio.

In 1871 Dr. Bernard and Eleanor and their youngest son died
of a cholera epidemic. The remaining six children were raised by aunt
Nancy Kennedy. By the 1880 Walton census, Louise was listed as the head of
the household and taking care of her younger brothers and sisters.

The fine residence of Mrs. Dr. Southgate, near
Walton, caught fire on Thursday last, and was partially consumed. But for
timely discovery the entire building would have been destroyed.

Southgate graduated from the Laurel Memorial College and opened her own
practice in Covington.
