  • Fayette County was formed from Kentucky County, Virginia in 1780. At the time Fayette County was formed it was one of the original three counties covering the entire state of Kentucky, now divided into 120 counties.
  • Bourbon County was formed from Fayette County, Kentucky in 1786.
  • Mason County was formed from Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1789.
  • Greenup County was formed from Mason County in 1804.
  • Lawrence County was formed from sections of Greenup and Floyd Counties in 1822.
  • Carter County was formed from sections of Greenup and Lawrence Counties in 1838.
  • Boyd County was formed from sections of Greenup, Lawrence and Carter Counties in 1860.

Boyd County is located in the Eastern Coal Field region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 515 to 1140 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 49,752 in a land area of 160 square miles, an average of 310.6 people per square mile. The county seat is Catlettsburg, located at the junction of the Ohio and Big Sandy rivers, where Kentucky meets Ohio and West Virginia.
