County History

Formed in 1786 from Fayette County.  Bourbon County was named for the royal French family who aided the colonies in the War of Independence. Bourbon was one of nine Virginia counties formed before Kentucky became a state in 1792. From its original area all of twenty-four counties and parts of ten other new ones were made. The first courthouse in 1787 in Hopewell (renamed Paris). Source: Kentucky Historical Society.

My name is Crystal Campbell Dingler. Some of my ancestors were early Bourbon County residents.

· Jacob Groshong (may be Grojean)  is on the 1794 tax lists in Bourbon Co. KY. He had moved from Lancaster Co., PA. If you have anything listing him, his son Samuel Groshong or his brother-in-law Daniel Kistler, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you very much. Marilyn Humphrey

Naming the Forgotten -
The Eastern State Hospital Project

This special KyGenWeb project gathers names of residents of Eastern State Hospital, formerly the Eastern State Lunatic Asylum, there prior to 1956.  The hospital cemetery may hold up to 10,000 unmarked graves. Before the registration of deaths in 1911, records are extremely difficult to find. If you have information, please contact Mary Hatton
