Tragic Death of Mrs. C. H. Finnell
Explosion of Coaloil Stove Sets
Fire to Mrs. W. H. Metcalfe's
Home on High School Court

Unfortunate Lady Smothered to Death in Attempting
to Subdue the Flames

WAS WIFE OF WALTON'S
TOWN MARSHAL

Saturday morning about 11 o'clock, when making preparations for the noon-time meal, a kerosene stove in the home of Mrs. W. H. Metcalfe (Mary Carpenter) on High School Court in North Walton, exploded, setting fire to the room, and quickly spreading throughout the entire house. Mrs. Metcalfe, an aged lady, owner of the property, was led from the house by Mrs. Gilbert Groger, a nearby neighbor. Mrs. Charles H. Finnel, age 50, who with her husband, had been making their home with Mrs. Metcalfe and caring for her, was in the room at the same time, and in attempting to extinguish the flames with a broom was overcome by the flames and smoke, and fell to the floor where she was smothered by the smoke and fumes.

In a short time the interior of the home was a seathing mass of flames. The Walton Volunteer Fire Department responded and soon extinguished the fire. Futile attempts were made to rescue Mrs. Finnell but the flames prevented (unreadable) the house until the fire was extinguished. The unfortunate woman was found in a room adjoining, but was past all aid, gasped and died. Doctors Ryle and Bedinger responded immediately but she was past all medical aid. She was burned about the body, arms and face.

Her daughter, Mrs. William Collins, was on the scene shortly after the fatal accident screaming for help of her mother, but she nor any one else could rescue her dear one. The remains were taken to the Chambers & Grubbs Funeral Home and later to her daughter's home, where they lay until Sunday.

Mrs. Finnell wsa the daughter of Mrs. Arminta Carpenter, deceased, and the wife of Town Marshal Chas. H. Finnell. Besides her daughter she is survived by one son Charles H. Finnell, Jr., two brothers, Ben Carpenter, Florence; John Wood Carpenter, Richwood, Boone County (some of the article is cut off here) and resides on the Walton-Nicholson Highway, with whom his mother is making her home since the fire. Her loss on the property and furnishings is fully covered by insurance with the Edwards Insurance Agency, Walton. All the rooms of her home were gutted by the flames and the furniture destroyed.
