DADS SERVICE: When Dad was called for duty by the US Army during the Korean War he first reported to Pineville, Ky. From there they sent him and about 200 more men on a bus to Louisville, Ky and swore them all into the army. Dad was then sent to Fort Meade, Maryland for 1-2 weeks were he was processed into the army. He received his shots, uniforms, papers, etc., Then Dad was sent on an airplane to Camp Breckinridge, KY. There he was in the infantry and completed his basic training. Normally Dad and the other men would have had 16 weeks of basic training but they reduced it to 12 weeks when they found out the men were going to be sent to Maryland and weren't going to be shipped out of the USA. Then after the 12 weeks Dad was put on a train to Maryland. He was stationed at Friendship International Airport in Maryland. Here Dad served 21 months operating Anti-Aircraft guns. Dad said they would do their training at a beach in Delaware. An airplane would pull big balloons behind them and they would practice shooting them down with the big anti-aircraft guns. He said it took abt 7 men to operate these guns. Dad said he was chosen to march in several big parades. He didn't know why they always picked him unless it was because he was tall and could march in back of some of the shorter men! He said one time they had the parade for a very important general who was retiring, but he couldn't remember his name now. Dad said the streets would be full of people yelling and clapping every time they marched in the parade. He said probably 2-3 thousand people lined the streets. Dad also made corporal in a short time. Dad said during one of his furloughs is when he came home and met my mother Pauline Evans Browning. After their meeting Dad returned back to Maryland for a year. They corresponded with letters during that year.
