Bell county was formed in 1867. It is located in the Eastern Coal Field region of the state. The elevation in the county ranges from 975 to 3500 feet above sea level. In 2000 the county population was 30,060 in a land area of 360.77 square miles, an average of 83.3 people per square mile. The county seat is Pineville. The Cumberland Gap is in Bell county, just south of Middlesborough, on the border between Kentucky and Tennessee.

Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 936 km˛ (361 mi˛). 934 km˛ (361 mi˛) of it is land and 2 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.


Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 30,060 people, 12,004 households, and 8,522 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km˛ (83/mi˛). There are 13,341 housing units at an average density of 14/km˛ (37/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.02% White, 2.40% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 12,004 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.00% are married couples living together, 15.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 26.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.95.


In the county the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 9.00% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 91.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $19,057, and the median income for a family is $23,818. Males have a median income of $24,521 versus $19,975 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,526. 31.10% of the population and 26.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.00% of those under the age of 18 and 21.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
