NEW GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY
FORMED
After 217
years Bourbon County can now boast its very
own genealogical society.
With that
in mind we welcome you to the first ever
issue of The Bourbon Countian, a new
publication produced by the recently created
Bourbon County Genealogical Society.
Although
there is a wealth of genealogical
information in and around Bourbon County,
the need for an actual genealogical society
was quite apparent.
In early
September 2003, two people with an interest
in creating such a society approached
Paris-Bourbon County Library to request the
use of their Genealogy Room from which the
new organization could be based.
The
Library Director, Mark Adler, was more than
enthusiastic about the idea and it was
agreed that the society could meet in the
room every third Thursday of the month.
To allow for a little lead-in time the month
of November was chosen to host the inaugural
meeting.
Eighteen
people were able to attend the meeting with
a very interesting and diverse cross-section
of parties present.
The
meeting ran very smoothly as society fees
were discussed and eventually agreed, a
board of directors was selected, membership
benefits discussed, basic ideas for an
exceptional program for the year 2004 put
forward and the basis of creating a new
organization such as treasury and applying
for non-profit organization status formed.
Kudos
must go to Damon Floyd, who drove all the
way from Bloomington, Indiana to attend our
meeting.
Although
the fledgling organization has many

dreams
and aspirations, it also realizes that there
is a long way to go and that it must learn
to walk before it can run.
Consequently, it is important that the group
must first focus on increasing membership of
the society.
Genealogists with an interest in Bourbon
County are encouraged to join the Bourbon
County Genealogical Society. Benefits
include receiving this bi-monthly
newsletter, large discounts to society
events in addition to free entry to
quarterly society events such as speakers,
seminars and lectures and financial help
towards meeting the aims of the society
including the publishing of genealogical
books and pamphlets.
The
society also hopes to help Paris-Bourbon
County Public Library to reorganize and
expand its Genealogy Room in the very near
futures. Individual literary donations
to the library are not only requested but
encouraged |
|
The
library is committed to working in
partnership with our society and is looking
forward to a successful relationship.
As Mark Adler commented at our meeting, "As
shown by the numbers attending this meeting;
genealogy in Bourbon County is alive and
well and with the creation of this society
it can only get stronger."
An
additional filing system has already been
acquired by the library in anticipation of
donations from members and the general
public and a substantial amount of money has
been included in the library's budget for
new books. A wish list is being worked
upon and will include some publications
relating to Harrison, Nicholas and Clark
counties in addition to Bourbon and
genealogy in general.
BIRTH
ANNOUNCEMENT: To the county of Bourbon,
a genealogical society, born 11-20-03.
Congratulations! |

PARIS, Ky, July 23, There was a reunion
of Company C, Ninth Kentucky Cavalry,
C.S.A., held today at the home of Mr.
Charles H. Meng, near North Middletown,
at which seventeen of the surviving
forty-three members of that noted
company were present.
Mr.
Meng chose the anniversary of the battle
of Atlanta, in which the company
participated, for the reunion, and
invited every surviving member of the
company to dinner. There are
forty-three members of the company now
living, and they are scattered over ten
States. At the dinner today there
were seventeen gathered together to
enjoy the bountiful hospitality of the
host and recount again the stories of
the years spent together over forty
years ago. Of those present one
came from Georgia, one from, Louisville,
one from Franklin, and one from Mason
county to meet again their comrades of
the war. Those present there were
the following members of the company:
Capt.
Ed Taylor, Lexington, Ky.

E. Abraham, Louisville, Ky.

In
addition to these members of Company C,
there were present Dr. weaver and
Captain Ed K. Thomas of North
Middletown, and Desha Breckinridge of
Lexington, the son of Col. W.C.P.
Breckinridge, who commanded the Ninth
Kentucky.
The
home of Mr. Meng was exquisitely
decorated with flags and flowers and the
dinner was such as no one of the guests
saw during the four years of their
service - all the good things that make
Kentucky housekeepers famous the world
over.

KENTUCKY CAVALRY
C.S.A.
"This
was on of the very finest bodies of
young men that enlisted in any army, and
became the equal of any company in the
service of either army during the late
war. "
"It
was not given to many companies to
achieve an individual character and
separate identity, but this company did
win such a character; its action at
Noonday Creek, at Snake Creek Gap, at
Sunshine Church and other places was so
conspicuous and handsome that it became
known as a large, well disciplined and
gallant company."
