THE HALLS OF KENTUCKY

Submitted by Professor Margaret Givens-Green

Lewis (or Louis) Hall was born in 1829 in Maryland. He supposed served in the Civil War for the Confederacy in Company D, Kentucky Troops.  He moved to Lexington, Kentucky (date unknown) where he met Emeline (or Emily-Emma) Burl (or Burril) of Bourbon County, KY. They married on November 13, 1866. This marriage is recorded on Page 34 in the "Book of Marriage Bonds, Colored, 1866-1873" in Fayette County, KY. (They were my maternal great-great grandparents.)

Emeline was born in 1852 in Bourbon County, KY. They had eight (8) children:

             1. Julia (b. February 26, 1870)

             2. Henry

             3. Amanda ("Mandy")

             4. Henrietta (b. 1877) - in 1903-1906 she lived at 34 Garfield, Detroit, MI.

             5. Louis

             6. John

             7. Thomas Buhl

             8. Robert

Julia Hall was my maternal great-grandmother. She was born one-fourth mile of Muir Station in Fayette County, KY, and was baptized in the Methodist church in Lexington. She married Reuben Williams (of Columbus, OH) on November 15, 1884 in Lexington, KY. They had two children: Arthur (born in 1887 and died in infancy) and Emma, born November 30, 1888.

Lewis (Louis) Hall died in 1892 in Fayette County. Later, Emeline was married to a man named Walker Woodford. I have no idea what happened to Reuben and Walker but by 1903 both Emeline, Julia, and young Emma were living at 67 Garfield in Detroit, MI. I can find no information on Reuben Williams or Walker Woodford.

In May, 1909, Emma Williams married Raymond C. Lewis of Salem, Michigan. They were my maternal grandparents. The Lewis family were the first African Americans to settle at Salem, Michigan. (This is my home and our homestead is yet there. It is not far from where I live now and I have siblings who yet live their in the same houses.)

Emeline and Julia soon moved to Salem. Emeline Burl-Hall-Woodford died on May 25, 1925 at Salem, Michigan and was buried in Thayer Cemetery.

In 1926, Henrietta Hall Smith (Inever found any record of her marriage, or any children) died at Salem and was buried next to her mother, Emeline.

In 1936 Thomas Buhl Hall lived at 549 Smith Street, Lexington, KY. I have not found any related "Hall" in Lexington thus far.

There was mention that some of the Hall's moved to Ohio but there is no date as to when.

Julia Hall-Williams died on May 18, 1945. There was never any word as to what happened to her husband, Reuben Williams. She was buried next to her mother and sister.

Her daughter, Emma (Williams-Lewis), lived in Salem until her death on October 10, 1964. Emma had eight children. Her youngest daughter was Julia Ann - my mother.
