Mrs. Ara Butler of North Middletown, Ky., visited
her daughter and relatives in Paris Sunday and attended services at Shorter
Chapel A.M.E. Church. Her many friends were glad to see her.
Pvt. David Taylor of Millersburg, Ky., is spending
a few days with his parents and friends. He will soon return to camp.
Mrs. Marietta Briggs of Millersburg, Ky., was a
visitor in Mayslick, Ky., Sunday.
The will be an interesting basketball game at
Western High School tonight between the Western Tigers and the Mt. Sterling
team. A tight game is expected. Coach Rankins is requesting a heavy crowd.
Bring your friends along with you. Admission, adults 25c, school children 15c.

Sunday, Jan. 30th at 3:00 p.m. Rev. W.
H. Wallace will be at Wiley Methodist Church, North Middletown, Ky. Each member
is asked to give one dollar that day. Sunday, Feb. 13 at 2:30 p.m., there will
be at Wiley Methodist Church, North Middletown, a Men’s Navy rally. Dr. F.A.
Brown of Paris, Ky., will be the guest speaker. Miss Rosie Stevenson is the
promoter of each of the church programs. Each one is asked to give two dollars
at the Men’s Navy rally.
Mrs. Minnie C. Turner, gospel singer, of
Indianapolis, Ind., was the guest of Mr. And Mrs. James Robinson, 524 Gorey
Ave. She was accompanied by Mrs. Robinson’s sister, Mrs. Mary E. Wilson, of
Winchester, Ky., Mrs. Turner rendered a great program at Shorter Chapel A.M.E.
Church Sunday afternoon.
Paris Western High School Tigers will play the
Cynthiana High School Basketball squad in Paris at Western High School Thursday
night. Coach Buford Rankins is quite anxious for a capacity house. The
admission prices will be adult 25c, school children 15c. You are invited to
attend and encourage the boys.
Mrs. Mary Weathers had the following guests for
Sunday dinner, Jan 9th. Miss Willie Montague, Mrs. Julia Tidel,
Sallie Joe Wheeler, Stella Williams, Alvernon Blackburn, Newt Brent, Andrew
Mitchell, William Finley and seven guests from Covington, Ky.
Miss Willie Montague and Andrew Mitchell were
Sunday guests of Mrs. Joe Ella Porter.
Miss Verna Lee Franks has returned from K.S.I.C.
on account of illness.

Mr. And Mrs. Isaiah Johnson of Millersburg, Ky.
Entertained Christmas Day with a family reunion dinner. Other guests of the
family included: Mr. And Mrs. David L. Johnson of Columbus, O, Mr. And Mrs.
Clarence Johnson and son of Lockland, Ohio, Mrs. William Chambers and children
of Lockland, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. H. Jones and son of Millersburg, Ky, John
Johnson and son, Thos. L Johnson of Paris, Ky, Prince Johnson of Millersburg,
Ky. The dinner was greatly enjoyed and every one was thankful that it was made
possible to be together once again.
The District No. VI Sunday
school meeting will meet at the Second Christian Church, North Middletown,
Saturday and Sunday. Rev. C.B. Gentry, pastor.
Mrs. Katherine Buckner was
a visitor in Paris Tuesday.
Mrs. Addie M. Williams of
Paris visited her sister, Mrs. Pearl Brown and brother, Wm. Miles of Millersburg
Monday and Tuesday.
Mrs. Alice Anderson of
Paris was a visitor at the home of Mrs. Pearl Brown of Millersburg Tuesday.
Mrs. Josie A. Baker and
daughter, Miss Anna F. Baker, and Mrs. Lillian Mae Madden of Cincinnati, Ohio
were visitors in Paris Friday. They are visiting their father and grandfather,
Wm. Brown of Millersburg.
Mrs. Nan Wilson of
Millersburg died Sunday morning at the Massie Memorial Hospital. Funeral
arrangements have not been made yet.
The Women’s Missionary
Society of the 2nd Christian Church of Millersburg met at the church
Sunday morning after the church services. Mrs. Lettie January, president,
presiding. Mrs. Lizzie Johnson, assistant secretary.
Pvt. Raymond Higgins of
Camp Swift, Texas is visiting his mother, Mrs. Carrie Higgins and sister, Mrs.
Delphia West and nephew, little Garland West of Millersburg.
Mrs. Carrie Higgins of
Millersburg has received word that her son, Jason Higgins has arrived safely
overseas.
Mr. And Mrs. Charley
Purdell of Paris were the guests of his mother, Mrs. Laura Hall of Millersburg
last Sunday.
Misses Maggie Jane and Mary
E. Wheeler of Millersburg were visitors in Paris Thursday.
Mrs. Georgia B. Smith of
Millersburg is on the sick list. Her many friends are wishing a speedy recovery
for her.
The usual Wednesday night
prayer service will be held at the Seventh Street Christian Church. Rev. I.H.
Moore, pastor.
S/Sgt. Charles W. Mack
arrived home Sunday to spend a seven day furlough with his mother and family.
His station is at Camp Gruber, Okla.
John W. Booker, Jr. and
Randolph Booker have returned home to Ashland, Ky., after spending the Christmas
holidays with their grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Ben Taylor on Lilleston Ave.

Feb. 1, 1944
There will be a pew service at Shorter Chapel,
A.M.E. Church Sunday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. The Rev. S.P. Taylor, pastor of First
Baptist Church will be the guest speaker and his choir will render the music.
The public is invited to attend. Rev. A. Pope, pastor.
There will be a Sunday
school membership rally at the St. Paul Methodist Church Sunday, Feb. 6th
at 9 a.m. A special program will be presented. The Sunday school classes will
be organized under the following colors: Red, White and Yellow, The leaders
are Mrs. C.D.C. Mebane Marks, Miss Shirley Duckworth, Mrs. Richard Hughes.
Prof. Chas. Buckner, superintendent. The public is invited to attend.
Mrs. Lummie Thomas and
husband were Sunday afternoon guest of Mr. And Mrs. James Toles on Kelly St.
Mrs. Annie Hickman, one of
our most beloved citizens, died at her home Sunday about 10 o’clock. She was a
life long member of St. Paul Methodist Church. Most likely funeral services
will be held Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Richard Hughes officiating.
The Keys of Zion Singers
from Lexington, Ky., rendered a full time program at Shorter Chapel A.M.E.
Church Sunday night to a very large audience.
Mrs. Sallie Toles was a
visitor at Paris Western school Monday morning, the guest of the sophomore
class.
Lt. August Garner left
Paris Monday to resume his army duties. He is the son of Mr. And Mrs. W.E.
Garner of Second St., Paris, KY.
There will be a basketball
game Friday night at Western High School. The Western Tigers will play the
Winchester team of Oliver High school. Admission: adults 25c, school children
15c. The public is invited to attend.

Mar. 1, 1944
Paris Western Tigers scored
a basketball victory over the Cynthiana team Tuesday night at Cynthiana with a
score of 39 to 27. The tournament begins in Lexington, Ky., Thursday, March 2nd.
Paris Western High school will take part.
Mrs. Ara Bradley and little
daughter Charlotte have returned to their home in Ashland, Ky. After a pleasant
visit with relatives and friends in Paris, Ky.
Miss Elmeta Spencer, Brooks
Street remains ill at her residence. Her many friends are wishing a speedy
recovery for her.
Mrs. Lummie Thomas has been
slightly ill at the residence of her aunt, Mrs. Sallie Toles.
Mrs. Daisy Bishop is among
our sick. Her many friends are wishing a speedy recovery for her.
The religious education
classes were in session at Western High School with the following ministers in
charge: Revs. I.H. Moore, Richard Hughes and S.T. Taylor. The classes were
quite large.
News for Sunday services in
the churches should be sent to Prof. E.B. Toles Thursday morning in order to be
in Friday’s paper. The church calendars will be run in Friday’s papers instead
of Sunday’s hereafter.
John Lee Ayers who left
Tuesday morning for Cincinnati,O, for induction into the army, was entertained
Monday evening at the home of his sister, Mrs. Clara B. Howard, Jackson St.
Those present were Mr. And Mrs. John L. Ayers, Mr. And Mrs. Gus Ayers, Misses
Gladys Hill, Bettie Ann Sharp, Gertrude White, Mary Gladys Johnson, Mary Howard,
Marion Warren, Mary D. Jones, Alberta Johnson, Mary Prather, Sarah Elizabeth
Roberts, Sarah Oliver, Messrs. Carlos Nichols, Ollie Ben Field, John Jones,
Lucien Scott, Chas. Rice, John D. Adair, Chas. Howard, Hezekiah and Mr. Ayer’s
sisters, Mrs. Clara B. Howard and Mrs. Marie Thompson.

Miss Marian Carter, graduate of Central High
School, Louisville, Ky., Spent several days last week in Paris visiting her
father and friends, While in the city, she spent a day visiting Paris Western
High School. Upon her returning to Louisville, Ky, she was expecting to resume
her courses in beauty culture.
Mrs. Laura Allen, who moved
to Cincinnati, O, for an indefinite stay, is reported to be returning to her
farm home in Bourbon County near Little Rock, Ky. She has been greatly missed
at the Little Rock Christian Church, and will receive a cordial welcome upon her
return. Mrs. Allen also has several daughters who form a singing group that is
really worthwhile.
Mrs. Ara Butler of North
Middletown, Ky. , was a visitor in Paris Saturday. While here, she also called
to see her sister, Mrs. Sallie Toles.
Mrs. Belle Jenkins left
Paris recently to visit her son and his family in Columbus, O. She is expected
to return about the middle of March.
In the recent basketball
tournament held at Dunbar High School, Lexington, Ky., the Lexington basketball
squad won first place.
William and Frank Spencer
of Cincinnati, O spent the day Sunday with their mother, Mrs. Katie Spencer and
Miss Elmeta Spencer, who has been ill at her residence on Brooks St.
All workers in the Red
Cross drive are urged to push forward the work as rapidly as possible. Start a
house to house canvass and devise other ways by which to contact each and every
one. We want to do a fine job of it this year. For further information,
contact Dr. F.A. Brown or Miss M.E. Kellis. Either of these workers will be
glad to serve you.
Mrs. Jadie Straughter,
Little Rock, Ky., who has been on the sick list, is able to be out again and to
resume her work in the choir at Little Rock Christian Church.

Pvt. Ellwood Cross from a camp in Texas has
arrived in Mayslick, Ky., to be the guest of his parents, Mr. And Mrs. J.C.
Cross. He attended the morning services Sunday at the Mayslick Christian
Church.
Rev. E.B. Toles preached at
the Mayslick Christian Church Sunday morning and was the dinner guest at the
Gault’s farm home.
Rev. J.J. Washington,
Lexington, Ky., preached both morning and evening at the Germantown Christian
Church. Rev. L. Turpin of Paris, preached at the Sharpsburg Methodist Church.
Miss Marian Carter, who was
a pleasant visitor in Paris, last week, the guest of her father, has returned to
her home in Louisville, Ky.
Mrs. Ara Butler has
returned to her home in North Middletown, Ky., after a pleasant visit with her
relatives and friends in Paris.
Elder Charlie Hall remains
on the sick list at Little Rock, Ky.
Mrs. Alice Hillman has been
selected to head the Red Cross drive in Little Rock. All are asked to
contribute all that you possibly can to this all important drive. Ask your
friends to give to you and you will turn it over to Mrs. Hillman. The names of
all contributors and amounts will be printed. Remember it is for our boys who
need the “Red Cross” so much at this time.
In the tournament, recently
held at Dunbar High School, Lexington, Ky., Lexington won the championship.
Danville won second, Richmond, third, and Somerset, fourth. Many persons from
Paris attended the finals Friday night.
Cornelius Daniels, junior
student in Paris Western High School, reported for induction examination Tuesday
morning.
Mrs. Fannie Jackson was a
visitor at Western school Monday.
