Washington County is located in the northern part of Kansas, on the Nebraska border. Surrounding counties include Jefferson and Gage counties (Nebraska) to the north and northeast; Marshall county to the east; Riley county to the southeast; Clay and Cloud counties to the south and southeast; Republic county to the west; and Thayer county (Nebraska) to the northwest. It's county seat is Washington. Named for the nation's first president, Washington county was created in 1855 by the first territorial government. Its original territory included most of the current counties of Kansas, and was formaly organized in 1860 and many other counties were set off from the original part known as Washington county.
