TREGO COUNTY. Situated in the western central
part of the State, is bounded on the north by Graham county,
on the east by Ellis, on the south by Ness, and on the west
by Gove county. Organized in 1879, it contains 900 square
miles, or 576,000 acres, of which about 11,000 are under
cultivation. County seat, Wa-Keeney; population, 700. Small
veins of coal are found, but are not workable. White hard
magnesian and soft magnesian limestone are found in
abundance. Conglomerate is found in all sections and sandstone
in small quantities in the southeast. Chalk of a superior
quality is found in some places, yellow ochre is abundant and
gypsum and potters� clay are found. The K. div. of the U.
P. Ry, runs across the county from the middle of the eastern
side to the northwest corner, passing through the county
seat. The general surface is rolling, and timber is scarce.
The Water courses are numerous, the Smoky Hill river runs
across from west to east, parallel with the southern line and
about 6 miles north of it. Big Creek enters the county a
little north of the middle and flows due east, and the Saline
river enters at the northwest corner, and runs from west to
east, skirting the northern border, and the numerous
tributaries of these streams give an ample supply. Population,
June 1883, 2,127.
BANNER. A country postoffice in Trego county, 14 miles soutwest of
WaKeeney, the county seat, and 9 south of Collyer, on the K. div. of
the U. P. Ry., its nearest shipping point. Grain and live stock are
shipped. Mail weekly by stage from Collyer. A. W. Purinton, postmaster
and farmer.
BOSNA. Small place in Trego county, 8 1/2 miles west of
WaKeeney, the county seat, its nearest shipping point. Mail,
semi-weekly, by stage from WaKeeney. Frank W. Zeman,

COLLYER. A village on the K. div. of the U. P. Ry,
in Trego county, 14 miles west of Wa-Keeney, the county seat,
and 335 west of Kansas City, Mo. Nearest bank at Hays City.
Has a Catholic church and United Brethren society, supported
by a population of 30, who ship live stock and produce. Tel.,

CO-LO-NO. A station on the U. P. Ry., in Trego county, 8 miles west
of Wa-Keeney, the county seat. Not a postoffice.
CYRUS. Formerly known as Williamville, is a country
postofice in the extreme southern part of Trego county, 23
miles south of Wa-Keeney, the county seat, on the K. div.
of the U. P. Ry, its nearest shipping point and bank location.
Population, 40. Mail, daily by stage from Wa-Keeney. G.

GIBSON. A country postoffice in the southwest of Trego county, 24 miles
southwest of Wa-Keeney, the county seat, and 17 from Collyer, its nearest
shipping point on the K. div. of the U. P. Ry., whence it has a semi-weekly
mail by stage. Live stock is the only shipment. Timothy Armstrong, postmaster and
live stock.
OGALLAH. Located on the K. div. U. P. Ry., in the county of Trego, 9 miles east
of Wa-Keeney, the county seat, 312 from Kansas City, and 245 from Topeka. Nearest
bank at Hays City, 23 miles east. Ships grain. It has a
district school, several church societies, and 25 inhabitants.

TREGO. A discontinued postoffice in the centre of Trego county.
WA-KEENEY. A flourishing village on the K. div. of
the U. P. Ry, in Wa-Keeney township, and the county seat
of Trego county, 321 miles from Kansas City, Mo., and 254
from Topeka. It is a good business point, and has the usual
complement of hotels and business houses, a Union church,
good schools, and a weekly newspaper, the World. Nearest
bank at Hays City, 32 miles east. Grain, live stock and
wool are shipped. Population, 400. Stages to Utica and
Dodge City (south), tri-weekly; and to Fremont, Lenora,
daily, and Logan (north), with mail, semi-weekly. Tel., W.U.
