Washburn Academy -- 1916, 1917 and 1918
Washburn Academy had been a part of Washburn University since 1865, but in 1892 was made a separate and distinct unit. It was essentially a college prep high school, made up of sophomore, junior and senior classes. It was not limited only to young people, however; they also admitted older students who wanted a college degree but felt they had been out of school for so long that they needed to polish up their studies before they attempted college work. Most students were from Topeka, although a few were from other towns; some classes even contained out of state students.
