Shawnee County Directories 1884-1885 Gazetteer and Business Directory, City of Topeka
TOPEKA. The county seat of Shawnee county and the capital city of the State, is pleasantly situated on both sides of the Kansas river, in the northern central part of the county. It was located in December 1854, and is now a prosperous city, rapidly increasing in population and wealth, and by the census of 1880 had a population of 15,451, being slightly behind Leavenworth at that time, but judging by the rate of increase, it is now the largest city in the State. That portion of the city lying on the north bank of the river is known as north Topeka, and constitutes the 1st ward of the city. The railroad facilities of Topeka are very good. It lies at the junction of two great lines of railroad: The A., T. S. F. R. R. (the K. C. br. of that road leaving the main line at this point), and the K. div. of the U. P. Ry, and it is distant from Lawrence 29, Atchison 50, Leavenworth 63, and from Kansas City, Mo, 66 miles. Two handsome and durable bridges connect the two portions of the city--one on Kansas ave, a splendid iron structure, on stone piers and abutments, consisting of 6 spans of 150 feet each, was built in 1870 by private enterprise, and afterwards purchased by the county for $100,000, and made free to the public. The second bridge is of a similar character, and is the property of the A., T. & S. F. R. R. Co, and is used exclusively for their purposes. Another bridge is much needed to accommodate the increasing traffic, and it will doubtless soon be built.
Originally founded in 1854, Topeka has grown steadily, and now with its wide, well shaded streets, handsome buildings and beautiful surroundings, is quite a model State capital. Its growth during the past 2 years has been very great, more than 2,000 dwellings having been erected during that period, and many fine business blocks, among which may be
mentioned the Windsor Hotel, the Grand Opera House, costing $60,000, and having a seating capacity of 1,800; Crawfords new opera house and hotel, a good substantial brick building, the hall having a seating capacity of 1,200; the North Topeka Opera House, seating 800, etc. It is estimated that upwards of $3,000,000 have been expended in building during the last 2 years, and many more extensions are contemplated, including large additions to the work-shops of the A., T. S. F. R. R., this company are also erecting a large and handsome block of offices. The new U. S. Court House and Postoffice, now approaching completion, will be a beautiful structure of cut stone. The new Capitol, when finished, will be a magnificent building, costing $3,000,000, but its progress is slow; the east and west wings are completed. It is located in the heart of the city, on a square containing 20 acres of land.
Coal is found in the immediate vicinity of the city, and its manufactures are numerous and flourishing, comprising foundries and machine shops, 3 breweries, flour mills, agricultural implement works, a distillery, brick yards, lard, tallow and oil works, etc. Already the A., T. & S. F. R. R. Co. employ as many as 1,200 men in their machine shops and offices at this point, and manufacture supplies and rolling stock for operating their roads in Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. When the buildings and improvements now in course of construction are completed, the Company will have a capacity for the employment of 1,000 men in its shops alone, and will have facilities to manufacture all the rolling stock, including locomotives and cars of all kinds, for their road besides going all kinds of repairing. The number of men employed and amount of wages paid monthly in Topeka by the A., T. & S. F. R. R. Co. in the foundries, machine shops, sash factories, flouring mills and elevators, book binderies, job printing offices, and other manufacturing establishments aggregates 1,624 persons, and $92,071, as reported by the officers and proprietors. This does not include the wages of carpenters, masons, and tinners; the employees of newspapers nor day laborers.
A Mill and Water Tower Company is organized and is moving for the construction of a dam across the Kansas river, a little to the west of the city, which will afford ample and cheap power and room for 60 good sized mills and factories. A flaxseed oil mill, grain elevator, and flouring mill, capable of grinding 1,000 bushels of wheat per day, is rapidly nearing completion, which will give the city a total milling capacity of 3,000 bushels per day. The Girard, Iola, and Topeka R. R. now in construction, will soon connect this city with the extensive coal and lead fields of southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri, and on reaching its objective point on the Mississippi, will open up the vast lumber region of Arkansas to the Topeka trade. The B. & M. R. R. of Nebraska have surveyed a line from Pawnee City Nebraska, to Topeka, and announce their determination to build it. The Missouri Pacific Ry contemplate an extension of their line from Ottawa to Topeka. The Chicago & Alton, too, will, ere long extend their road to this city. Indeed Topeka is the natural and is destined to be the actual great railroad centre between the Mississippi and Missouri rivers and the Rocky Mountains, and must become the great distributing point and centre of interchange for the plateau states of the Rocky Mountains, and must ever enjoy the healthy competition of the East and the West, and the growing demands of the North and the South. The Topeka, Salina and Western R. R. now building, and intended to run from Topeka westward to Delhi (189 miles), will be running trains early in 1884.
Thirteen different denominations are represented in the churches of Topeka. The Catholics are now building a brick church at a cost of $20,000. The Congregationalists dedicated in January, 1881, and the Methodists in June, 1882, splendid stone churches; the first at a cost of $20,000, and the second over $30,000. The educational facilities of Topeka are very complete, there being 14 public school buildings, in which are employed 54 teachers, With an average attendance of 3,000 pupils, and a high school with 100 pupils. The school property of Topeka is worth at least $300,000. There are also 2 colleges, the Washburn College, unsectarian, but under the care of the Congregational church, the College of the Sisters of Bethany, under the management of the Episcopal church, which is a very complete institution comprising primary, preparatory and collegiate departments. This college is located on grounds 20 acres in extent and is replete with every convenience for the comfort and health of its pupils. The city has a free library, containing about 8,000 volumes, under the control of the Library Association, and a handsome new building for its accommodation has been erected on Capitol Square, at a cost of over $50,000. The A., T. S. F. R. R., and the U. P. Ry having given $25,000 towards the cost of its construction. In addition, there is the State Library in the Capitol Building, with a valuable collection of standard works--not for circulation, but open to all for
reading purposes, and the Swedish Library Association, with a good collection of books.
Several fine parks contribute to the adornment of the city, and it has an excellent and thoroughly disciplined fire department, with 1 steam and 2 chemical engines, and all improved appliances; a good police force maintains order; it is well lighted with gas and electric lights, and has a street railway system, which is being gradually extended. It has the Holly system of water works, built and owned by the Topeka Water Supply Company, a private corporation that is rapidly extending the works. Two mineral wells are located In the city, that of Mr. Losch, known as the Topeka Mineral Wells, being the most noted.
The newspapers and journals of Topeka are: The daily and weekly Capital, the daily and weekly Commonwealth, the daily and weekly Kansas State Journal; weekly, North Topeka Mail, North Topeka Times, Saturday Evening Lance, Tribune (colored), Kansas Farmer, Kansas Methodist, Kansas Telegraph, Churchman, monthly, Educationalist and Faithful Witness. Most of the secret and benevolent societies are well represented in Topeka, and there are several literary and scientific societies, and with many advantages not enumerated in this sketch.
The total assessed valuation of real and personal property in the city is $5,000,000. Topeka is rapidly rising into the importance her position as the capital of the thriving and prosperous State of Kansas demands, and has at the present time a population of at least 27,000. Tel., W.
