Shawnee County Directories 1867-1868 North Missouri and Eastern Kansas Gazetteer and Business Directory
SHAWNEE COUNTY
is situated on the Kansas river, in the central part of the populated
portion of the State. The county is about twenty-five miles long by twenty
wide. The Kansas river runs through the entire length of the county. The
Kansas river has rich broad bottoms, covered by a heavy growth of all varieties of timber found in the west. Stone suitable for building and fencing purposes, and for lime, are found in all parts of the county. Thick veins of good
coal are found in several places. The county is divided into six townships
and about forty school districts, three fine villages besides Topeka, which is
the County Seat and capital of the State. Topeka is a city of about 3,000 inhabitants, has six churches, one college, one female seminary, good district
school houses, with a court house and jail in course of construction; also a
capitol building in course of construction, to cost $500,000. Total amount of
taxable property for 1866, $2,400,000, school tax raised for 1866, $19,000.
The county is watered by Soldier and Six-mile creeks, and the Kansas and
Wakarusa rivers.

The State Capital of Kansas, is
pleasantly and commandingly situated on the gently sloping hills of
Shawnee county as they approach
the Kaw or Kansas river on the south
side of that stream. It has a descent
to the north and east, from which the
commanding eminence on which the
town is situated, gently slopes into
the fertile bottoms which skirt on the
north and north-east. The place is
substantially and well built, there
being an abundance of the best rock
and other material for permanent
structures. It is supposed that the State House
will cost one-half a million dollars
when it is completed. The educational institutions and
advantages of the place are of no
small importance, being founded on a
permanent basis, and being well managed and under the control of men of
ability. Taken all together Topeka is one of
the most go-ahead and lively of the
State Capitals west of the Mississippi.
The place is situated 60 miles in a direct line west of the western boundary
of the State of Missouri, and about ou
the same parallel as the mouth of the
Illinois river. It is 64 miles south of
the north line of the State, where it
adjoins Nebraska, and 149 miles
north of the southern part of the
State, where it joins on the Indian
Territory. The place contains a population of about 4000.
