The following is taken from Cemeteries in Sumner County, Kansas by Harvey and Ruth Swan (1983).

"The site of a known burial in Gore Twnsp

Section 9.  Some travelers stopped at Central School for drinks at the well.  A cup hung on the pump for everyone to use.  A little girl traveler died shortly thereafter of Diphtheria.  She was buried under a Cottonwood tree that stood across the road from the school and North of the Southeast corner of Section 9.

In a few days 5 other children of the neighborhood also died of Diphtheria after having drank from the same cup at the well."
