Alton Cemetery

 I visited this cemetery in June of 2000.  There are three stones remaining.  I've been told that many stones have been removed from this cemetery.  Sunken spots indicate other probable grave locations, but to the best of my knowledge, no written record exists of others who are buried in the Alton Cemetery.  If you know of others, please e-mail me.

The following is taken from Cemeteries in Sumner County, Kansas by Harvey and Ruth Swan (1983)….

"Alton Cemetery, Falls Township, R2W, T35, Sec 15, SW corner of NW1/4. Location from Hunnewell: 7 W, 1/2N.

This tract of land was donated by Christian B. Miller and wife, Mary to Logan Hawk, Samuel Fox, and J.A. Ryland, trustees of the Alton Grave Yard Assoc. and their successors. It was filed Sept. 4, 1903, by D.W. Sayers, Pres. Of the Alton Cemetery Assoc.

This land measures 235 3/4' E-W by 255 3/4' N-S.

The first (found) marker was dated 1881.

The sign "Alton Cemetery" was erected May 18, 1964. It was made possible by the Corzine Cemetery Board and was erected by Ben Urban and Millard Fair. "
