GEUDA SPRINGS

Connie Shelton, Postmaster for Geuda Springs writes that they "are very proud of Geuda's rich past and good future" and that they will be happy to display a plaque from the Sumner County Historical Society.

Connie submits the following about Geuda Springs, and its history.

"Geuda Springs takes its name from the Indian word meaning "healing waters" for the seven mineral springs. These springs were once the reason "Geuda Springs" was a famous health resort.
The town was established in 1880, on the county line between Sumner and Cowley counties.

In the early 1880's the town boasted several hotels, two general stores, two drug stores, doctors, attorneys, a restaurant, furniture shop, harness and wagon shops, a blacksmith, and three livery stables. In January of 1882, Joseph F. White started the "Geuda Springs Herald". This was a seven-column newspaper of Republican views, it was published weekly with a circulation of 350.

In the 1890's the town elected the second all women city governments in Sumner County Mrs. J.E. Barnes as mayor and the five other women set about to clean up the town and bring law and order to the community.

The water from Geuda Springs was entered at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, and took top honors. After which people traveled to Geuda Springs from all over the world to consume and bathe in the medicinal waters. With the opening of the Oklahoma Territory in September of 1893, this started the decline from it's resort days

Present day Geuda Springs has a rustic country atmosphere, with a population of 219. Local businesses consist of a Post Office, Grain Elevator, and Café. Most people are employed in surrounding towns, or in agriculture.
