THE CHISHOLM TRAIL AND THE CATTLE TOWNS
Jim Gates, Anthony, will present "The Chisholm Trail: Cattle Drives and Cowtowns" to the Sumner County Genealogical Society on January 8, 2001.
This is a great presentation about why and how the cattle drives began, and why they stopped. You can almost hear the steers rattling their horns, and the cowboys blowing off steam!
Come and join us! The meeting starts at 6:30 P.m., meal at 5:30 p.m. at the Wellington Family Steakhouse. There is NO admission charge, and visitors are always welcome!

FEBRUARY 12
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
On Monday, February 12, Judy Lewis will present "One of America's Many Faces" to the Sumner County Genealogical Society.
Lewis's African-American History program, illustrated with her own original drawings, begins with the history of black forced immigration on slave ships, and continues to the present time.
Lewis will present thumbnail sketches of the buffalo soldiers who fought in the Civil War, helped establish forts in the west, and the Tuskegee Airmen who fought in Word War II. Along with many other interesting highlights, Lewis will include the more recent trials, tribulations, and triumphs of black history in America. This is a " don't miss" meeting!

CELEBRATE YOUR IRISH ROOTS - TAKE A TRIP TO IRELAND!
Pat Gaddie, SCGS member, and librarian at the Wellington Public Library will take us along with her on her trip to Ireland. Pat has several tips and tricks that will help you find your Irish roots, too! Join us in March for a little "wearin' o' the green".

CALDWELL'S COWBOY POET
F.H. Maynard was Caldwell's Cowboy Poet, and on Monday, April 9, Don White, Caldwell, will present a program about the cowboy poet to the Sumner County Genealogical Society. White said that Maynard's book, "The Winning of the Wild" was a prose and poetry book and was about some of Maynard's adventures. White's presentation will include excerpts from Maynard's book and interesting facts about the Caldwell poet.

What is the Sunflower R,C, & D, and How Can They Help Me?
Roger Masenthin, Coordinator of the Sunflower R, C, & D, Harper, will answer these questions when he presents the May 14 program to the Sumner County Genealogical Society. Masenthin is enthusiastic about the south central Kansas area, and will speak about the availability of grants, funds, foundations, and training programs that can help businesses, societies, and organizations in this area. Even if you aren't interested in genealogy, this program may have just the information that you need!
