MARCH - 2

FREE BEGINNING GENEALOGY CLASSES
Della Shafer will teach "Beginning Genealogy" starting Thursday, March 2, at the Wellington Public Library meeting room, lower level. The classes will be from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and subsequent classes will be held on Thursday nights on March 9, 16, and 23.



Della will be teaching the basics on how to use the standard types of genealogy forms, common genealogical terms and acronyms, good research and record keeping practices, how to obtain information from personal or written contacts, official records, and other recorded data, and how to use and disseminate the information you gain.

There will be a limit of 30 openings.

MEMOIRS - PART I

Julia Hoppes, Wichita, who grew up in Corbin, Kansas, will be presenting the program about writing about her memoirs of Corbin in the 1930's. Come for some interesting information about Corbin, and Julia's experiences.

APRIL - 10

MEMOIRS - PART II

Elaine Clark, teacher, writer, and columnistg for the Wellington Daily News will give a "hands-on" workshop on "How to Get Started Writing Your Own Memoirs."

Elaine, a schoolteacher, and weekly columnist for the Wellington Daily News helped her mother write down and preserve her memories, and currently has several other projects in the works.

Come for an interesting and fun meeting!

Family Reunion Workshop

The SCHGS February "Show and Tell" meeting was such a success, we've decided to have a "Family Reunion Workshop". Several SCHGS members have volunteered to share their reunion experiences. Whether you want to host a small one-day family get-together or a longer family event, there will be someone who has "been there - done that".

Anthony Cheever's Civil War Diary


For the past two years, Russell Sawyer, Oxford, has spent much of his spare time studying 15 Civil War books, and transcribing Anthony Cheever's Civil War Diary. Sawyer has reconstructed the daily events that made up the life of Quartermaster Sergeant Anthony Cheever of Company H in the Illinois Cavalry.

Sawyer will share these stories plus the stories of Cheever's home in Illinois, which was a part of the Underground Railroad at the next meeting of the Sumner County Genealogical Society. Come to the Wellington Family Steak House, East Highway 160 on Monday, September 11, 5:30 p.m. for the meal, and 6:30 p.m. for the meeting.

Visitors are always welcome.

OCTOBER 9

"Finding My German Roots:
A Dream Come True

Sherri Theurer will present "Finding my German Roots: A Dream Come True" to the Sumner County Genealogical Society on October 9th.

Theurer will talk about what it was like to meet her cousins in Germany and will share tips, tricks, and websites for furthering your own German research. Come and bring a friend; visitors are always welcome!

SUMNER COUNTY ROADS

Richar Orr, Conway Springs, will tell us the story about the surveying and building of the early Sumner County Roads.
