C. Wait, the newly installed

and expressed his gratitude at the
honor imposed upon him, in a neat
speech. After music by the band, led
by Billy Tinkler, Com. McDowell
gave a short address on a question
from which religion and politics were
excluded called "Morality" After
this the first table of fifty persons were
served from a hidden recess in the
house, including oysters and other
eatables too numerous to mention.
Owing to a refractory stove, the first
table was held longer than the second
and third tables, but in good time the
oysters were forthcoming, under the
supervision of Mrs. Carter. By the
way the dishes were returned by
some a fourth time, it was guaranteed that they were served up in a
palatable shape. After spoiling 40
cans, and a cart load of other provisions, a barrel of coffee. the third and
last table of fifty was filled, and the
boys had exhausted the last old army
song they knew. Among the small
hours of the next morning we adjourned to meet again in warmer
weather, and in a place targe enough
to accommodate all the friends of the
G. A. R., some of whom were excluded on account of lack of room.

The annual festival and installation of the officers of Bridge Post
131, G. A. R., came off as announced
last Monday evening, Jan. 20, 1888.
The weather being propitious the attendance was large, a
although on account of the limited room in the G. A. R. Hall, only veterans and their
families were invited. Meeting was
called to order by Commander Anson Miller, followed by the song
"Marching through Georgia." All
joined in the chorus, even to the
four year old daughter of the Commander, and it stirred up the "old
boys" like the sound of battle.
The following officers were installed by Past Commander J. C. Lloyd,
in an impressive manner:
Commander, T. D. W. Manchester.
S. V. C, S. S. Knapp.
J. V. C, W. E. Jones.
Surgeon, A. Root.
O. D., B. G. Lanham.
O. G.. Copperthwaite.
Chaplain, L. Chellis.
Adjutant, C. C Post.
Trustees, E. E. Sharp, J. C. Lloyd
and Anson Miller.
Commander Miller made a very
appropriate out-going speech, and
ended with gracefully resigning his
badge to his successor.
T. D. W. Manchester, the newly
installed Commander, was next called upon for a speech, who complied,
giving a short history of the organization of the Bridge Post, and also
expressed gratitude at the honor
conferred upon him in a few well chosen words.
Next was music "Flag of the
Union" which was well received,
followed by a recitation, "The Countersign was Mary," by Miss Effie Jones. The piece was well recited,
every word being distinctly heard
by the audience.
Oration "Our G. A. R ," by Chas.
N. Manchester, was pronounced
good by all, and was heartily applauded. The quartette "How it Marches
The Flag of the Union" was well
sung.
But one of the most entertaining
features of the literary part of the
programme was the select reading
by Mr. C. Post. It was was a war
record of Co. G., consisting of 102
men.(rest of paragraph unreadable)
The programme was unusually
good, and was well carried on time. The
supper was excellent aud abundant,
and we heard it remarked several
times that it did not look like hard
times, for four long tables were reset several times and all were filled.
The old soldier found no occasion to
forage for more.
Mrs. Abby Kelley, Mrs. Anson
Miller and Mrs. B. G. Lanham had
charge of the tables, and it was so
well directed that there was not
a flaw or break in that department
throughout.
The G. A. R. Hall of Post 131, formerly known as the Bridge school
house, was beautifully and appropriately decorated with emblems of
war, flags, mottoes, and pictures, portraits of the two martyred presidents occupying the west end
Comrades W. E. Jones and L. Chellis, the decorating committee,
received the highest commendation
from all quarters for the skill they
had displayed as amateur house decoraton. Every one seemed happy
and the best of good feeling prevailed. Many pronounced
it the pleasantest entertainment of the kind ever
held at Bridge.

veteran, Eph. Simpson.

The G. A. R. post at Bavaria has
determined to surrender its charter.
The membership is only nineteen,
and the distances they live apart result in slim and
infrequent attendance hence the determination
designated. No officers were chosen
at the last annual election. We can
but regret the necessity for this decision.
H. H. Nash says a local
organisation will be effected and the
spirit of tbe old "boys in blue"
maintained. Most of the members
of Bavaria Post will doubtless connect themselves with the Posts at
Salina, Brookville, or Ball's Bluff. (Saline County Journal, Jan. 10, 1889)
_____________________________________________________________
The Son of Veterans held a most
interesting installation service at
their hall Monday evening. The
exercises were under tbe ministration of the retiring Captain, U. G.
Boyer, and he deported himself on
this occasion with credit to the organisation. The officers elected for
the ensuing year and who were installed at this time are: Chas.
E. Smith, Captain; E. B. Anderson,
1st lieutenaut: W. E. Hedenberg.
2nd Lieutenant; W. E. Brown. W.
G. J. Lay and B. B. Stimmel,
Camp Council ; T. G. Cozene, Chaplain; N. V. Hilton, 1st Sergeant;
U. G. Boyer, Sergeant of Guard;
E. S. Newman, Color Sergeant ; N.
G. Lyons, Corporal of Guard; W. G.
J. Lay, principal musician; G. O.
Beard, Camp Guard; A. N. Richardson, Picket Guard; W. E. Hedenberg, delegate to State Encampment
aud J. E. Henning, alternate.
Interesting exercises in addresses
by member of Barnside Camp and
Grand Army men followed this ceremony, and then the audience was
treated to some excellent music by
a galaxy of singers and an organ performance. The young people indulged in pleasant pastime in the
nature of plays and the evening
passed off pleasantly to all present.
The W. R. C. and G. A. R. as well
as other ladies and gentlemen, were
represented on this occasion and the
hall contained about as many as it
could conveniently hold.(Saline County Journal, Jan. 10, 1889)
