Joe Hooker Post, Hutchinson, 35th Anniversary


As reported in the Aug. 7, 1914 "Hutchinson News":


Joe Hooker Post, G.A.R., Hutchinson's company of gallant veterans of the great war, will tonight celebrate the 35th anniversary of its organization.

Thirty-five years ago, on August 2, 1879 at the old court house, the post was organized with 25 chapter members. Since then the post has enrolled 873 members, and 289 of them have answered the last roll call. There are but eight of the charter members of the post now living: R. A. Campbell, Wm. Hodgson, M. B. Cochran, George F. Hayden, Henry Hartford, Wm. Hartford, S. H. Sidlinger and A. J. Malick.

The charter members of Joe Hooker post, when it was instituted and mustered in 35 years ago were: E. S. Handy, R. A. Campbell, D. M. Wright, R. R. Shadduck, Wm. Hodgson, M. B. Cochran, S. A. Atwood, George F. Hayden, S. B. Zimmerman, Philander Clater, F. L. Mintie, E. Bane, George D. Barclay, J. F. Blackburn, W. R. Marshall, W. B. Dearlove, M.V.B. Atwood, W.R. Underwood, T. T. Taylor, Henry Hartford, John Russa, William Hartford, S. H. Sidlinger, J. A. Grayson and A. J. Malick.

There have been 30 post commanders of Joe Hooker post since the mustering in of the organization, as follows: S. B. Zimmerman (died May 3, 1887); R. A. Campbell; G. D. Barclay (died May 31, 1911); J. W. McBride; S. H. Sidlinger; F. L. Mintie (died July 27, 1905); R. L. Frame; T. T. Taylor (died); S. J. Morris (died July 27, 1905); F. S. Mitchell; H. C. Townsend; S. M. Colladay; J. M. Arthurs (died January 13, 1903); Dan E. Reid; W. L. champion; W. E. Edwards; M. Hoagland; William Glover (died May 16, 1904); J. A. Kirkpatrick; Newt Denning; Charles Noyes (died Jan. 29, 1910); M. B. Cochran; W. H. Mitchell; H. W. Smith; George W. Cooter; Henry Hartford; William Hodgson; W. H. Quarterman.
