CASTLETON, numbering population some 75, was settled in 1872, and is located on North Ninnescah river in Reno county, 14 miles south of Hutchinson (c h), the usual shipping point. It has three churches, Christian, Methodist and Presbyterian, also a district school. Shipments, grain and farm produce. Stages to Hutchinson, Kingman and Medicine Lodge. Wm. Wallace, postmaster.

HAVEN,settlement on the Arkansas river, in Haven township, southeastern part of Reno county, 15 miles from Hutchinson (c h), the most convenient shipping point. Mail, five times a week. Caleb Cupps, postmaster and farmer.


HUNTSVILLE, farmhouse postoffice in Hayes township, northwestern part of Reno county, 25 miles from Hutchinson (c h), and 16 southwest of Sterling, its nearest shipping point and location of nearest bank. Mail, four times a week. T. B. Totten, postmaster and farmer.


HUTCHINSON, The county seat of Reno Co., lies on Cow creek and the Arkansas river in Reno township, northeastern part of the county. It was settled in 1871, as since been incorporated as a city of the third class, and with a population of 2,500, is an important shipping point on the A., T. & S. F. R. R., 218 miles fliom Atchison, 108 from Topeka, and 234 from Kansas City. The principal points of interest here are 4 churches, Methodist, Presbyterian, Baptist and Catholic, a good public school property valued at some $25,000, a brick court house, a bank, 3 weekly newspapers, Masonic, Odd Fellows and Good Templar societies, flour mills, and several hotels, the leading and most popular one being the Tremont House. In this county there are still some 200,000 acres of railroad lands for sale at from $4 to $8 per acre. Wheat, flour and live stock are the principal shipments. Telegraph, W. U. Express, Adams. LANGDON, established in 1873, in township of same name, Reno county, 21 miles southwest of Hutchinson (c h), the usual shipping point. Baptist and Methodist societies, with a district school, are here. Mail, tri-weekly. J. E. Ulmer, postmaster.

NICKERSON, numbering in population some 700, is situated on the A., T. & S. F. R. R., and on the Arkansas river, in Grant township, northern central part of Reno Co., 9 miles from Hutchinson (c h), and 177 from Topeka. An extensive stone roundhouse and other permanent buildings of the railroad company are here, which give employment to a large number of the citizens, and makes the city a desirable place for business men to settle. The churches here are Methodist and Congregational; the schools, public. Shipments, hay, live stock and grain. Over 200,000 acres of land are for sale in this county by the railroad company, at prices ranging from $4 to $10, per acre. Telegraph, W. U.; Express, Adams. Mail, daily. A. Reeves, postmaster.

PLEVNA, on the North Fork Ninnescah river, in Westminister township, western central part of Reno Co., 30 miles via postal route from Hutchinson (c h), the most accessible shipping point. Population, 54. Stage to Hutchinson and Iuka, tri-weekly, with mail. Frankie Hazen, postmaster.

PRETTY PRAIRIE is situated in Roscoe township, southern central part of Reno Co., 21 miles south of Hutchinson (c h), nearest bank location and its shipping point. In the township there are Methodist, Presbyterian and Christian societies, with district schools. Wheat, corn and oats are shipped. Stages to Hutchinson and Medicine Lodge, daily, with mail. T. H.
