John L. Schalk m. Annie Dumrauf / Dumerauf 1880 Osborne Co., KS. John L. Schalk. d. 16 Oct 1938 Osborne. He was burried at Osborne Co., KS St. Aloysois Cemetery

I wrote this letter and the response is below

Charlotte, I was handed your letter to the Clark-Gashaw Mortuary by Bob Gashaw the owner. The reason that I was handed the letter, I have the old Clark record books. I looked in the book and found John Schalk: Born in Germany June 25, 1846, Father was John Schalk--his mother was not known. He died October 16, 1938, age 92 years, 3 months, 21 days. It says that he was a retired farmer. It does not say who ordered the service or who paid the bill. If I can be of any further help, please let me know.

And this is his obit:

AN AGED PIONEER DIED THIS WEEK
John Schalk, Who has been a Resident of Osborne County for 60 years, Passed Away

John Schalk, aged 92, pioneer homesteader, died at the home of Mrs. Reuben Pierce, where he had made his home for many years, on Sunday Morning, October 16, 1938.

Mr. Schalk was born in Germany on June 26, 1846, and at the time of his death was aged 92 years, three months, and 20 days. He came to America in 1971, and in 1878 he came to Osborne county where he homesteaded the land three miles south of Osborne now occupied by Wallace Anderson, In 1890, he was married to Mrs. Anna Zegler, who passed away in 1911. Sold his farm in 1912, and after a trip back to his native home in Germany, he returned to Osborne where he has since resided. Mr. Schalk was a devout Catholic, and never missed a service at his church as long as he was able to attend. For many years he has been obliged to use crutches but he managed to get around very well until recently when he has been confined to his room much of the time. He boarded at the home of Mrs. Reuben Pierce for Many years, and it was there that he died Sunday morning. He is survived by one nephew, Herman Schalk of Pueblo, Colo., and one stepdaughter Mrs. Henry Adams, who lives south of Downs. It is said that with the exception of a few small bequests, his remaining property was left to the church.

Funeral services were held at St. Aloysios church on Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock, conducted by Rev. J. Diss, and burial was made in the Catholic cemetery. The casket bearers were: John Mans, Jake Mans, Wm... Henry John McCormic, J. H. Rochford, and Fred Bader.

(The only think I find wrong with his obit. His wife's name was not Anna Zegler, it was Dumerauf. I believe her mother's name was Zegler.)

John L. Schalk's wife Annie Schalk died 21 Nov 1911 in Tidlen, Osborne Co., KS.

They had only one child Anna Schalk b. Nov 1873 IL who married Henry Adams after Jun 1900.
