Miami County Obituaries




BECK nee CAMERON
Fairozina W. Cameron, daughter of Peter N. and Nancy Cameron, was born in Putnam county, Missouri, September 30, 1858. She departed this life September 21, 1944 at her home eight miles northwest of Pawnee, at the age of 85 years, 11 months and 21 days. She was married to Charles P. Beck, October 26, 1884 at Ash Grove, Missouri. Four sons were born to this union. Carl preceded her in death, June 1901, at the age of seven years and Clarence in February 1902, at the age of nine years. The husband and two sons, Sumner S. Beck of Ralston and Dona W. Beck of the home; a grandson, Verlin Cleo Beck, with the armed forces in England, and one sister Mrs. Dora Webb of Maramec, survive. Mr. and Mrs. Beck spent the first 11 years of their married life in Crawford county, Kansas. They came to Pawnee county in 1895 and settled on the homestead [T23N R4E Sec. 24] where they have lived for the past 49 years, and where their value as neighbors and good citizens cannot be told in words. Mrs. Beck was united with the Methodist church in Brazilton, Kansas, in 1892. After she came to Pawnee county a Friends church was organized at Masham and she became a member where she served until a Methodist church was organized at the Hill Chapel church in the neighborhood, where she continued her good work in Christianity as long as the church remained active. After its closing her membership was transferred to the First Methodist Church of Pawnee. Her long a rich life was spent in the service of her God and family and friends. During times of trouble and grief in the community she was one of the first to offer consolation and help with her hands and her words of kindness and wisdom. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, September 24, at the Masham school house. Rev. Clarence M. Ball, pastor of the First Methodist church of Pawnee, officiated, assisted by Rev. A. J. Bradshaw of the Pawnee Christian church. Music was furnished by a male quartet composed of C. R. Kerr, Merle Cannon, Louis Lemert and Bert Williams, with Miss Nellie Livesay accompanying. Interment was made in the Masham cemetery under direction of the Poteet funeral home. (Pawnee [OK] Chief, Sept. 28, 1944)

BETTIS
Fred Bettis, 50, Paola, died last night in St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City from injuries suffered in an automobile accident south of Louisburg on U.S. 69. A vehicle driven by Miss Opal Martin, of Sidney, Iowa, collided with Bettis' car. (abstact, Emporia Gazette, Jan. 18, 1936)

McLANAHAN
Cecil McLanahan, age 2, died yesterday (Dec. 18th) in a Kansas City hospital from burns he suffered while playing with matches with his brothers Tommy, 3 and Billy, 4. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Grant McLahahan of rural Paola. (abstact, Emporia Gazette, Dec. 19, 1946)

MILLER
Ronald Elvin Miller, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Miller of Paola, died last Wednesday night (April 16th) and the funeral services were held on Friday. The baby was born prematurely last Monday at the home of Rollo Miller in Baldwin. (abstract, Lawrence Journal World, April 19, 1952)

NEYLON
James Neylon, Paola, died last night (Mar. 11th) at his home there. Since August 1, 1880, he had continously served as agent of the Missouri Pacific railroad. (Hutchinson News, March 12, 1924)

PANLIE
Edgar, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. Panlie, of Frontenac, died Dec. 31, 1894, of inflammation of the stomach. Aged 4 years. (undated Girard paper)

PATTON
Gabriel Patton, who for a number of years made his home at LaHarpe with his son, Bert Patton, died Saturday morning (Oct. 9th) at his home in Paola. Funeral services were held there Monday morning and burial was in the Paola Cemetery. (Iola Register, Oct. 14, 1915)

REMINGTON
Miss Ada Remington died at her home in Osawatomie Thursday night. She was a prominent civic leader and member of pioneer Osawatomie family, Mrs. Arthur Willis, longtime Ottawa resident who had lived in Osawatomie the past few years before her death about a year ago, was a sister. Funeral services will be in the Osawatomie Methodist Church Monday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in the Osawatomie Cemetery.(abstact, Ottawa Herald, 8-19-1961)

ROECKERS
Mrs. Mary E. Roeckers, 79, died yesterday in a Paola nursing home. She had been a resident of the home for the last five years, and had recently broken her hip in a fall. She is survived by her sons, Albert of Paola, and Charles of Greeley; daughters, Mrs. Kathryn Culbertson and Mrs. Martha Bridgeman, both of Lawrence; Mrs. Frances Coulter, Ottawa; Mrs. Rose Stoker, Paola; and Mrs. Eva Longshore, Houston. Funeral services will be tomorrow at the Runyan Funeral Home in Paola, with burial in the Paola Cemetery. (abstract, The Ottawa Herald, Nov. 30, 1956)

SHERIDAN nee WISE
Mrs. Ellen Wise Sheridan, 81, of Paola, died yesterday afternoon following an illness that began last Monday. Her sister, Mollie Wise Wilson, died three hours later at her Louisburg home. Mrs. Sheridan was the wife of B. J. (Barney) Sheridan, a veteran newspaper publisher of Paola. Mr. and Mrs. Sheridan had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last November. Her funeral is set for next Monday.(abstact, Hutchinson News, Jan 12, 1935)

SMITH
Mrs. Bertha Ellen Smith of Osawatomie, died Nov. 26, 1961 in a Paola nursing home. Born Nov. 13, 1871, she was the daughter of George and Rosa Gillis, and came with her parents from Mishawaka, Ind. to Kansas at the age of 12. She taught in the Franklin County schools and, on May 5, 1896, she was married to Benjamin Franklin Smith of Coffey County. She had lived in Osawatomie since 1911. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Charley Davis, Osawatomie; three sons, Willard Smith, Parker; Paul Smith, Great Bend, and Wyman Smith, Osawatomie; 11 grandchildren, and 14 greatgrandchildren. Funeral services will be at the Birchard Funeral Home, Osawatomie, Wednesday at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Green Valley Cemetery.(abstact, Ottawa Herald, 11-28-1961)

SMITH
Mrs. Willis Smith, rural Stanton, died yesterday at a Paola hospital after a short illness. She is survived by her husband, of the home; a son, Robert, who is stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army; and four brothers, Otis, Vinton and Roy Foster, of Paola, and William Foster, Rantoul. SPONABLE
John Sponable, 54, retired Paola banker, died yesterday of a heart attack in a Topeka hospital. He had been called to the hospital due to the critical illness of his daughter, Mrs. Thomas Medill. The Sponable family had been active in Miami County banking circles for 82 years. His grandfather, John W. Sponable, organized the Miami County National Bank in 1875. After the death of his father in 1940, the younger Sponable became president of the bank, and sold his controlling interest about a year ago. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, two sisters and a brother. (abstract, The Ottawa Herald, July 30, 1957)

TURNER
John Turner of Paola died of grippe at his home at the age of 97 years. Mr. Turner was born in York, England, in the reign of George III. When he was 16 years old he went to sea on a sailing vessel as the body servant of Lord Thomas Dandas. He served six years in the British navy. He was in China in 1842 during the "opium war." He was disabled and was given an honorable discharge. He came to Kansas in 1874 and had lived here since then. Mr. Turner saw Queen Victoria crowned. He had seven children four of whom are living.
