Peter Cameron Family
Submitted by Frank Furillo

Peter Cameron, the son of James Cameron, from the "Scots of Virginia", was born in 1821, in Louisville, Kentucky. These Cameron's lived close to my Budd relatives, near Broad Run, in Kentucky, and I believe took the wagon train in 1834, with them to Vigo County, Indiana, for the Budd's, and to Illinois, on the "National Road" for the Cameron's. Peter Cameron marries Nancy A. Smith in 1848, in Schuyler County, Illinois. Their first son, James Newton Cameron is born somewhere in Illinois, in 1850. He is my 2nd great grandfather.

The Peter Cameron Family moves from Illinois, to near Mandeville, Missouri, where they are now living, once again, close to the John Moses Budd family. In 1863, the Budd's and Cameron's have both moved to Liberty, Putnam County, Missouri, where Peter is denied service in the Civil War "Due to undsuidibleness of age". (see document here.)

Peter Cameron moves his family to Sugar Creek, Miami County, Kansas, in 1865. He purchases 160 acres, July 5, 1865, from Wm. Grasty, and his wife, for $300.00. The Southwest Corner of Section 27, Township 18, Range 25. Peter starts farming, and blacksmithing, from his property that year. (see deed here.)

About a mile away is his brother William Cameron, who owns two stores with A. J. Binkley, and will deed some of his land for the Franklin School! William Cameron also establishes the William Cameron Cemetery, on his land. Now known as Rockeville Cemetery. Not far away, according to the "Drexel: The First 100 Years" book, there is mention of an "Old Graveyard", upon a knoll where "several bodies are buried, but their names remain lost to history." When speaking with a local, whose grandfather used to "play among the stones", I now know this to be, as he told me, The Peter Cameron Cemetery. Peter Cameron, and William Cameron were brothers. This is a cemetery of my relatives.

Cameron Family Reunion, Peter Cameron's farmhouse, on his property in Sugar Creek. Circa 1880.
Peter (top row, right, next to pillar) and Nancy Cameron (top row, middle, with little white cap); their children, George W.,
Charles Wesley, (standing on sidewalk, far right; also see his obituary), Peter Franklin, Farazina N., Joseph H. (see his obituary), and Dora. Also, Rachel Emily Budd is seated, in black, far right, next to Charles Wesley Cameron. I think that is Minnie Cameron Hacker Fischer, holding the ball, and Daisy Cameron below her?

These next pictures are of Charles Wesley Cameron, including a photo of the same house in the reunion photo. Harris, Kansas. His wife, Mary Burfield, was part Cherokee, and her mother walked the "Trail of Tears". She is sitting to the left of him. In our Budd relative's, we also have Cherokee blood.

Finally the sellers deed, when Peter and Nancy sold the farm for $1500.00 to Prentice Courtney, who had plans on making this land the plat for Drexel. Not to happen!
