Lincoln County Cities and Towns

A brief description and history of the major towns of Lincoln County, including links to help you with your research.

Lincoln Center

Lincoln Center was founded in 1870 by George Green, naming it after the county. The "Center" was added to the name to indicate its location in the center of the county. County residents originally voted to make Lincoln Center the county seat, but this was briefly overturned in the November 1870 election, which named nearby Abram as the county seat. In 1872 another vote was held, returning the county seat to Lincoln Center. The two towns merged shortly after. Lincoln Center was officially incorporated in 1879. Lincoln Center grew rapidly over the next decade, more than doubling in size. Kansas Christian College opened in 1885. The railroad opened a branch line through Lincoln Center in 1886, bringing mail service to the city.
