CHETOPA

At a meeting held in Powhatan, Ohio, in January, 1857, an organization of ten members was formed, having for its object the foundation of a colony somewhere in the southern part of Kansas. A committee of three, Geo. Lisle, Geo. Evans. and Samuel Steel, were appointed to go out West, and look for a location. This committee left April 1, and arrived at Childers place. The next day they visited the place where Chetopa now stands, and set their stakes for their future homes. The town received its charter March 23, 1868. In 1869, January 1, the first paper, the Chetopa Advance, commenced its career, published by A. S. Covy. At present it is published by J. M. Cavaness. The town is situated in the southeast part of the county, within 20 miles of southern line, on the west bank of the Neosho River, with three lines of railroad, M P, M, K, T and D, M & A, and contains at present a population of 3,500 inhabitants, surrounded by a fine agricultural and grazing country.
