CHETOPA
A flourishing city of about 1,000 population, settled in 1867 and incorporated in 1870. It is located
on the Neosho river and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas Ry., in the southeast corner of Labette county, and
contains 2 flour mills, 1 saw mill, 1 foundry, 4 churches (2 Presbyterian, 1 Methodist and 1 Catholic), and
a school house erected at a cost of $25,000. It also has a banking house and 2 weekly newspapers, the
Chetopa Herald (dem.) and Southern Kansas Advance (rep.). The principle
exports are live stock, grain and flour. Oswego, the county
seat, is 9 miles distant, and Topeka 169 by rail. Stage to Baxter Springs.
