Johnson County Military
"50 Years After"
by Charles R. Green
Register Publishing Co., Olathe, 1911

Names of the Old Soldiers living in and around Olathe,
Johnson County, Kansas, Who Took Part in the Civil War.

The boys who went out 1861-1864 and came home in 1865 and 1866 and who are yet alive range from 65 to 80 years of age. Few are under 65, some are over 80. The majority however are under 70. The names of about 140 are given who either get mail out of Olathe post office or who belong to the G. A. R. Post, but are more removed.

Something less than 200 sleep their last sleep in the Olathe Cemetery. Of this 140 given here 24 are Kansas soldiers. 45 of the rest came to Kansas before 1874. Half of the 140, I think, were farmers in Johnson County within 5 years after the close of the war, and of recent years have left their farms and moved into town. Very few now live out in the country. In good weather the old boys congregate in the park and have good sociable times, yet as winter and spring come around how many faces disappear.
