HARPER COUNTY. Situated in the southern range of
counties, near the middle of the state, is bounded on the north
by Kingman county, on the east by Sumner, on the south by
the Indian Territory, and on the west by Barbour county.
Organized in 1878, it contains an area of 810 square miles
or 518,400 acres, of which about 47,000 are under cultivation.
County seat, Anthony; population, 700. A good red sandstone,
clay, excellent for the manufacture of brick, and some gypsum are found.
The only railway is the S. K., Whose present
terminus is at Harper, in the northeastern part of the county,
this line is to be extended westward at an early date. The
surface is level, with very little timber, but is well supplied
with s rings and numerous water courses, the principal being
Bluff, Big and Little Sandy creeks and their tributaries, all
flowing southeast into the south branch of the Arkansas
river. Population June 1883, 5,885.
ALBION. Formerly known as Gourock, a village in
Harper county, 18 miles northeast of Anthony, the county seat.
It is on the Chikaskia river and on the S. K. Ry, 12 miles
east of Harper and 22 west of Wellington. It has a good
district school, and ships grain, live stock and reduce.
Population, 60. Stage to Roy, Rex and Midlothian tri-weekly.

ANTHONY. Situated near the centre of Harper county,
of which it is the county seat, is a thriving incorporated
city, 63 miles southwest of Wichita, 42 west of Wellington
an 30 northwest of Caldwell, from which place it has adaily
mail service by stage. Harper, 10 miles north on the S. K.
Ry., is the nearest railroad point. Episcopal, Baptist,
Christian and Methodist churches and public schools are sustained.
Two weekly newspapers, the Republican and Journal, are
published. Flour, grain, live stock and produce are shipped.
Assessed valuation of real and personal property, $68,666.
Bonded indebtedness, $3,000. An extension of the St. L., F.
S. & W. R. R., is projected to pass through here. Exp.,

BLUFF CREEK. Small place on a creek of the same
name, in the southeast of Harper county, 16 miles southeast
of Anthony, the county seat, and 15 west of Caldwell, on the
A., T. & S. F. R. R., its nearest banking and shipping point.
It has a Methodist church and a district school, and ships live
stock. It is on the daily mail stage route from Anthony to
Caldwell. S. G. Bird, postmaster.
CORWIN. A newly established postoffice in Harper county.
DANVILLE. Fomerly called Coleville, a village in the
eastern part of Harper county, and a station on the K. Ry,
is 12 miles northeast of Anthony, the county seat, and 8 east
of Harper, the nearest bank location. Has Presbyterian
church, and a weekly newspaper, the Courant, is published.
Ships grain and cattle. Population, 300. Exp., Adams.

Christian and Baptist churches, a public school, an opera
house, 3 banks, a ublic library, etc. and 3 newspapers, the
Harper County Times, the Sentinel and the Graphic are
sustained. Grain, wool, hides and live stock are the principal
shipments. The assessed valuation of real and personal property is $125,000, and there is a bonded debt of 810,000.
