GOVE COUNTY. Situated in the northwestern portion
of the State, is bounded on the north by Thomas and Sheridan
counties, on the east by Trego, on the south by Ness, Lane
and Scott, and on the west by St. John. It is unorganized,
contains 1,080 square miles, or 691,200 acres, of which about
4,000 are under cultivation. The general surface is undulating. Magnesia limestone of good qualitg is abundant, and
gypsum is found. The K. div. of the U. P. Ry runs through
the extreme northern part of the county. The Smoky Hill
river flows through the southern portion, and the Castle Rock
and Big Creeks, tributaries of the same, water the northern
portion. Population, June, 1883, about 800.
BUFFALO PARK. A village in Gove county (unorganized), at Buffalo station, on the K. div. of the U. P. Ry,
283 miles west of Topeka. Has a congregational church, a
district school, and a population of 100. Live stock is the
principal shipment. Exp., Pacific. Tel., W. U. Stages to
Oberlin daily and to Ness City and Millbrook twice a week.

GRAINFIELD. A thriving town on the K. div. of the U. P. Ry, in the northern central part of Grove county, 34 miles west of Wa-Keeney, and 855 from Kansas City, Mo. It contains Methodist and Presbyterian churches and a district school, and ships grain and live stock. Mail stages run daily to Kenneth, Shibboleth, Oberlin, etc. Mail, daily. C. M. Burr, postmaster.

GRINNELL. A village and station on the K. div. of the U. P. Ry, in Gove county (unorganized), 43 miles west of Wa-Keeney and 75 west of Hay�s City, the nearest bank location, and, 364 from Kansas City, Mo. Cattle and bones are shipped. It has a population of 100 and a daily mail. Tri-weekly stages to Atwood, 60 miles north, and to Cimarron, on the A., T. & S. F. R. R., 94 miles south; fares, $4 and $5 respectively. Exp., Pacific. HACKBERRY. A postoffice, formerly known as Hackberry Mills, in Gove county (unorganized), 10 miles south of Grinnell, on the K. div. of the P. Ry, whence it has a tri-weekly mail. Nearest bank at Ellis. Van Smith, postmaster.

LULIE. A small place in Gove county (unorganized), 14 miles south of Buffalo Park, on the K. div. of the U. P. Ry. Live stock is the only export. Postoffice discontinued.
MAHAN. Formerly known as Tiffany, is a country post office in Gove county (unorganized), on Castle Rock Creek, 13 miles south of Buffalo Park, a station on the K. div. U. P. Ry, whence it receives a semi-weekly mail. Cattle raising is the only interest. W. W. Walkey, postmaster.
SARAH. A country postoffice in the northeast of Grove county (unorganized), 7 miles south of Buffalo Park, on the K. div. of the U. P. Ry. It is on the semi-weekly mail stage route from Buffalo Park to Ness city. S. C. Walters, postmaster.
